  DOUBT ABOUT PURCHASING NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-10-2022, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I am thinking of buying a NAS for home use. The purpose is to use it to store local user data, some Docker containers and some multimedia (music and movies).
The idea is to buy one with 4 bays and install 2 HDDs (RAID 1) of at least 10TB and in a year expand it with another 2 HDDs (RAID 5).
I'm looking at these models:
- Synology DS923+
- QNAP TS-464-4G
- QNAP TS-462-2G (because of its lower power consumption and lower price)
There are no reviews on the internet about the latest NAS and you don't talk about it on your website or on YouTube. Is the TS-462 a poor quality NAS?

Sorry to have to use Google translate, I don't speak English.

Thank you,

  choosing my first NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-10-2022, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello there, I'm interested in selecting my first NAS. I'd like it for storing all of my personal media (photos/videos), storage for my small business, and able to handle 8 IP camera surveillance video. There's a chance that I want to stream movies, but probably not that often. I may also want to make a separate partition and offer a few TB of storage to my son, who is a photographer. He lives in another city here in the same metro area. I've been looking at Synolgy NAS systems because I've heard their software is more mature and easier for newbies like me. What are the top considerations I should have in mind? Which NAS system would you recommend?

I am looking at getting a Synology DS220+ but am wanting to be able to use it to it's fullest. Will I be able to run Home Assistant on a VM plus have surveillance software running on two cameras?

  Getting a NAS, I think...
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-10-2022, 08:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Rob,
I'm very grateful for your YouTube videos explaining NAS, even though I know next to nothing about the processes you describe. If I could wave a magic wand, I'd like to schedule a Zoom call or something equivalent, for a discussion.
1. I would like to explain my current storage setup and usage, and why I am looking to get into NAS.
2. I'd like you to explain what option(s) would best suit my needs going forward. Models, memory, cache, RAID, etc. For no good reason and out of complete ignorance, I think Synology might offer the best solution.
3. I'd like to narrow my options down to a single device model, along with your advice for the best hard drives to use.
4. I would then like to purchase the hardware and get on another Zoom call with you to take me through the hardware and software setup, and actually get the thing successfully backing up my data.

Please let me know what these 2 consultations would cost, and possible scheduling times.

Thanks so much,
Jerry Weber

  First NAS Purchase plan
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-09-2022, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

First NAS. Learning curve ok. Goal Pro-sumer. System last 5+ years w/o regret of “if only I knew.” Data activity nominal. Current non-camera Data 2+ TB

Plan
QNAP 653D-8G 8 Cam License
2x Sgate Ironwolf 4 or 6 TB
1x Sgate Ironwolf 6 or 8 TB
2x Sgate SkyHk 8 or 10 TB
1x spare

Setup
2x Sgate Ironwolf 4 or 6 TB setup as Raid 5 to backup and Sync ALL data from Computer, 2 Phones, Laptop, 2 Tablets

1x Sgate Ironwolf 6 or 8 TB as backup of the Raid

2x Sgate SkyHawk 8 or 10 TB. 1st drive active Surveillance “writing” drive, 2nd as
backup until more cameras added and both needed for the data. Long term storage of clips or bkups would be minimal. One IP cam is on 24/7, & 3 on a trigger schedule. 4 more 24/7 planned

Potential
Home Assistant in Virtual Machine on NAS
Basic PLEX service for music and a few DVDs. Any streaming would primarily be from home network. Occasionally when away
Remote Access limited to devices listed above mostly for IP Cams, little non-cam data

Your thoughts?
Thanks!

  TVS-H674
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-09-2022, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there,

I have a synology from 2013 which has served me well. A 4 bay. However, its time for the upgrade. Looking at the TVS-H674. My end use is going to be database management and confidential client record backup, storage and hosting as well as a plex server that runs around the house and maybe when im away from time to time. I am set up for 2.5G network in the home. My question is as follows: Do i get 2X1tb M.2 drives for Cache and then all Plex and operating system goes onto there then shall i fill the bays with the 4 10tb iron wolf drives i have which leaves me 2 spare bays for storage or, should i look to get 4tb SATA SSD's for the storage to make the system quieter and quicker? Other than cost, would there be any disadvantages to this? Apologies if this is a newb question, i havent looked into any of this stuff since early 2013.

  NAS Choice
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-09-2022, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good Morning, We have just disposed of a WD PR 2100. So we are looking to upgrade. We have very much enjoyed your Videos and find them very informative. We are considering a Synology 720 + (maybe 723 +) When it arrives. We were then interested in possibly a QNAP Product.

As a Photojournalist I need to ability to safely secure - Password/Encrypt Photographs and Documents/Spreadsheets.

We have Two New WD Drives to install.

Your help in making an informed decision would be most appreciative. To be honest a lost of teh Tech Jargon/Spec is beyond me.

Hope you can advise, thanks for your amazing tech videos and informative knowledge.

Many Thanks, NIGEL HOWARD
