Running into issues with Plex/Nas |

Good evening,
I have watched many of your videos. I am trying my best to figure it out myself but I am struggling. I cant seem to get Remove Access to work properly. I realized my Nas can not support Plex. Though I can put it on the NAS, it seems to be super slow. My NAS is the following:
Model: DS1512+
CPU: INTEL Atom D2700
CPU Clock Rate: 2.13 GHz
CPU Cores: 2
DSM Version: 6.2.4
Total Physical Memory: 4096 MB
I believe I have 4 GB Ram.
Now, I am also trying to play 4K from the NAS and it is VERY inconsistant when and how it plays. Some have played fine but others seem to bog down so much. The hard drives I am running are QTY 5:
Seagate ST6000VN0033-2EE110.
I ensure I purchased all the same. All the drives appear to be healthy. My CPU tends to also run and jump to 99%.
I dont know what I am doing wrong or what I need to do different. But it does not seem stable. I have already had one of my Volumes crash on me once before. I have not set up a back up yet because I do not understand how to do so. I would like to do one with a USB function so I can put it in my safe after back up in case of a terrible event.

Synology ds220j issue |

I have a ds220j that I’ve had for about a year and a half and have 2 seagate ironwolf 94tb0 drives in it. About 4 months ago I get a message saying drive 1 went bad so I replaced it. All went well till a few weeks ago when I got the same message. Thinking now it may be the unit and not the drive. Thought I’d give it one more shot. I ordered a new drive but in the mean time I removed drive 1 and reformatted it and tried to put it back in but the ds220j would not recognize it. Today the new drive came and I installed it but it was not recognized at first but then it would pop up intermittently in storage manager. At this point I thought it may be bad connection so I shut it down and reseated the drive and started it up again be the same issue, it would intermittently show up in storage manager and when I hit repair it would disappear.
Have you heard of this type of issue with other ds220j’ s?
Any suggestions on how to proceed?
Is there a way to go back to DSM 6.2?
Thanks so much for any help you can provide!
Love your videos, a ds923+ is in my future.

Hi!
I was wondering what are the differences in between the QNAP Ts 462 vs 464 besides RAM? Would I be able to upgrade the RAM on a TS 462 to 4GB to effectively get a TS 464 on a cheaper price?

Seeking a home NAS solution. Primary purpose it securing family important family documents, photos, videos, etc. Secondary purpose is using as a media server to for TV & mobile clients. Tertiary purpose is to run VMs for system admin lab/project work and setup a Pi-hole.
Realistically have <1TB of data right now but looking for room to grow. LAN infrastructure is current 1Gb.

Fast 2 or 3 bay NAS |

Have an aging 2 bay Synology 216j, still works, slow as molasses, with 2 3tb disks. Recently installed 2.5gb network switch.
I don’t have huge data but will be increasing photography generated files.
Current pc has 3 tb storage between two m2 ssds, only half full. However, keeping multiple full/incremental backups/windows file history backups adds up.
1) Want 2.5gb
2) No movies, no music, no hdmi out needed.
3) Primary use – backup desktop, laptop(s), phone wirelessly if possible
4) Secondary use – access to photos to view on living room tv. Does this mean that I need to install PLEX?
5) Want real time file backup, and periodic full/incremental
6) Have one 8TB Iron Wolf pro drive to start
7) No raid, only jbod.
8) Thinking one 8TB drive to start, then adding another to back up the first one, maybe at night.
9) Very intrigued with using nvme ssds to improve caching/or even fast storage for photos to stream to tv. Cost noted above does not include adding these drives.
10) Probably increase memory to at least 8gb- not sure if more will help.
11) Considering qnap ts-364 for 2 8tb drives with one spare for future use, or I guess a 2 bay and use old synology for backup, although just as soon get rid of it.
12) Want backup to do real time (file history, scheduled full/incremental, wireless phone backup.
13) Sync to OneDrive (cloud) – if this is activated, does that mean my NAS is exposed to ransomware? Or is that exposure only if I allow remote access, which I do not need/want.
14) Regarding nvme, if unit has 2, can I use one for cache and one for storage – i.e. fast access to photos? Or do both need to be set up the same, one or the other? Which if so, then 4 nvme, with a pair for cache and a pair for storage? Although now the cost goes up, but I could build on it over time.
I am open to anything in the 400-550 (excluding drives) range that is fast, good back up software, and flexible nvme setup.
Phew – that’s a lot. I have been watching many of your NAS compares shows and thank you for the effort and knowledge that you impart. A most valuable resource.
Thank you very much.

Hi,
Great that you reviewed HDD noise!
I think that's one the most important aspects!
I'm searching for the most quite high capacity HDD.
Based on your videos I though buying WD Red PLUS (sounds great).
However you wrote that:
– Noise is Higher in Larger Capacities
What is "higher"?
What is the maximum I can get a quite one 4 / 8 / 12 / 14 ?
(would be great to release such video as I imagine home users will search for most quite)
Regards!

Hello,
I am setting up a new PC and I only have the graphics card and SSD’s left to buy. I am a little stuck on which SSD to buy for my needs. I am looking for quality gaming and also highly productive multi-tasking/streaming. Here is my setup (so far):
Motherboard: ROG CROSSHAIRS VIII DARK HERO
Processor: AMD RYZEN 9 5950X 4.9GHZ
Memory: G.SKILL TRIDENT Z NEO 64GB 4000MHZ [64GB (32X2)]
Graphics Card: NVIDIA RTX 3080 10GB OR RADEON RX6950XT 16GB (undecided)
Cooling: MSI MAG CORELIQUID C240
Power Supply: 850W Gold Power Supply
I have been looking at some SSD such as: WD SN850, WD Black SN850X, & the WD Back SN770. Do you think I should pick two of these SSD or maybe pick one of these & a SSD (SATA)/ HD? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Have a great day, Quentin

PnP NAS |

I'm searching for my first NAS.
The main use (grouped by imp.) will be:
- ! Plex server (videos mostly in 720p)
- ! Shared family (LAN) storage
- Cloud storage (now using google drive)
- Photo storage (now using google photos)
- other features (like webserver etc.) are interesting but not a must
I was wondering between QNAP TS-464 and Synology DS920+.
I watched the dedicated review at nascompare (btw you'd reach greater audience if you try to structure and cut the reviews) and was trying to findout which software budle I'd like most.
I was thinking to go with QNAP because of QuMagie and the more open approach
BUT looking at user reviews I got 2 MAJOR concerns:
1. Apps (photo, drive, etc) look nice but have poor reviews - people are complaining about major bugs and that they're not actually usable!
Is all that is gimmics I should ignore if I value my time?
2 SECURITY: Looking at reviews - It's hell for QNAP (although Qnap fans argue that ut's common for NAS). Even at QNAP site they tell you must putt off internet, stop all services even disable PPnP, and many more.
Which again would mean all is gimmics you can't use beacuse of security!
I'm not sysadmin and don't want to become one.
I'm home user (even if techy) and want to make my life EASIER not harder!
My question (probably important for all 99% home users): should I stay away of QNAP, buy Synology or even forget the whole idea of using ANY other goodies apart from pure NAS (read/write hdd atached to LAN)?

Synology DS1821+ & Plex Server set up. |

Hey team!
Been watching your vids for a while and would really love some advice around my intent to get an 8-bay DS1821+ NAS.
I already have 6 Shuckable 12TB drives I'm going to put in, and got 32gb of RAM on it's way too.
I'm not stuck with the issue with creating a PLEX Server from the machine to be a media centre for all my data.
As I currently have all my data on single storage HDD's on my gaming rig (8+ drives) haha. But that's the intent to get this synology 8 bay array for my storage. I'll be running SHR-2 so I can be a bit more dynamic with my drives, as getting the high capacity drives as back ups will take time over time.
But yeah I'm concerned about Transcoding, due to the CPU being the bottleneck because of the Ryzen CPU, and even the new Xeon model not having a inbuilt GPU.
So here's where I'm at a loss. As I want to get a 10Gbit network card for greater read/write speeds. But also considered a fanless GPU to pop instead as an alternative to help with transcoding. Drawback to that will be the network card being missing, and that also comes with an if transcoding will become a bottleneck.
It'll be all hooked up to my Ubiquiti gear, which is no bottleneck there.
Thought process is to get a network card, and use an external source for transcoding.
What am I streaming to? Mainly my new 2021 QLED 4k TV, and a laptop or two. - Which won't need 4k obviously.
I'd still like to watch movies on my PC, but my PC is directly connected to the network, and it's normally always on away (something I considered to host the plex server). - But I also don't want my PC (gaming) to be depended upon that side of things.
In saying that, the intent to play movies via VLC is still an option which wouldn't cause this problem, but then obvious media centre stuff. - Which I could just have Plex for my TV. - Potentially 2-3 TV's in future.
Let me know your thoughts, and really would love some of your insight.
Also I considered a NUC or a USB NUC to plug into the NAS, if that's an option to help transcode things as an alternative.
Keen to hear back, and thanks again!
