QNAP NAS Slow performance |

Hi I run a part time photography buisness - Only I am not getting far becasue I spend more time fixing my IT than doing anything prodcutive. I seem to have a very slow conncetion to my QNAP TD-451D2. Anything local or on plug in drive is fast - but my image catalog in on the NAS which is super slow - my editing software is just stuck all the time waiting for the NAS to load/transferfile/read (or much of anything).
I have cat -6 cables connecting my lap top to my router (std virgin media router) - then a cat-6 cable to my NAS. I do not connect them direct as I want to be able to access the NAS drive when travelling. (not that that it is ever successful as its so slow everything times out).
The drive is set to RAID 4 - reboot to a schedule weekly
I use HBS Backup sync to create cloud backups.
Using most of the drive space - so trying to do a clear out but can't without the system actually working!
I'm not technicl - so need things in simple language.
Please advise....Thanks!

Low power surveillance NAS project challenge |

I have a challenge on my hands. It's a project for my friend Jim. My friend is a bit of a cheapskate ( we call him "frugal", when he's in the room ).
Jim has a cottage on an island on the British Columbia coast. He is off grid but does have a pretty decent sized solar panel array and storage batteries. So power isn't a big issue, but can't be ignored. Jim "borrows" internet access from a neighbour via Wifi.
The project is to create a very simple, low power, low cost surveillance system just to check to see who is coming up the road onto his property and be able to view the images when he is back home here in Vancouver. A single camera is going to be sufficient. It will capture based on motion activation only so there is no continuous stream.
My background : I have a Synology and a QNAP NAS and am quite familiar with their use. I'm also reasonably familiar with both Tailscale VPN and Syncthing. I have 5 Reolink POE cameras set up around my home which FTP's their jpg's and mp4's to my old QNAP NAS. I also view them via Home Assistant which I set up as a virtual machine. I have a GL.iNet MT3000 travel router and understand its interface well. This will all be important as you will see below.
The plan that I have in my mind is to have a single Reolink POE camera mounted outside the cottage to watch the road. The camera and the NAS will then be connected via ethernet cables to a little 4 port D-Link POE switch in the cottage. The switch will connect to a GL.iNet MT3000 travel router. The NAS must be able to run Tailscale so that I can login from my home. The NAS must also be able to run Syncthing to sync the jpg and possibly the mp4 files to another NAS here in Vancouver.
The Challenge : which NAS / device should I use to collect and sync the jpg and mp4 files from the camera ? Even a 2 bay QNAP or Synology would likely be to expensive. If I could find one cheap enough, I'd install a single 1 Tb SSD as they are cheap and use little power. I'm not sure how much power the fans use though. I've thought about a Raspberry Pi 5 but I'm not too sure than I want that learning curve. The Pi can be loaded with its own OS or with Ubuntu. Using Ubuntu may make the installation of Tailscale and Syncthing more straight forward. Maybe a Zima device. I thought about an old laptop but I don't want Windows constantly clogging the Wifi with housekeeping crap. I would be happy to use an SD card / micro-SD card for storage. Back home, I can use Syncthing to delete files from the sync'd folder at home which will sync the deletion with the SD card on the cottage SD thereby freeing up space.
I have this well sorted out in my own mind but am not sure if I am clear in my descriptions.
I'd love to hear any thoughts on the NAS or the configuration in general.

I've been going down the rabbit hole of how I might create my own local password manager because I don't want to trust some weird company with my data while also being able to create backups and what not for data safety purposes. The one thing I can't find very easily is what the minimum recommended system resources for aes-256 bit encryption. Because since all it will be is a local "password manager" I don't need more than a 2-bay. But ram usage for encryption and such is something I am looking to just get the minimum necessary for a decent experience since it will only be for text files but also get it as cheap as I can for that decent experience.

I run a 1621+ with 4x10TB and 2x12TB drives, but I'm running out of space. I watched a video on your channel about a 500TB drive. I couldn't find it again, and I'm beginning to think I imagined it. I don't want to have to buy a Synology expansion module, as I don't have the room, so what's the biggest drive my 1620 can take? Thanks again

First Nas |

Hello,
I'm trying to centralize my files from various external drives, flash drives, and other storage locations. Currently we use about 200-250 gb of data total across all drives and Google, mainly personal photos and video over the last 15+ years. I would like to find a solution that allows me to access files from PC and android remotely in a similar feel to Google's products, but would ultimately like to get away from having to rely on Google for most of it. The more I learn about NAS, the more I change my mind about what I need. I have 3 1tb HDDs laying around to begin and can upgrade as needed. I also plan to get a medium-large external (12tb+) for backup. I thought NAS was the best way to go, but not sure if RAID or simple backups would be my best solution. I have been looking into Synology for ease of use, QNAP for hardware expandability, and TerraMaster for price.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Is this DS923+ set-up possible? |

Hi, I love your content and am planning on buying my first NAS. I could use some help as I need someone to verify if the setup I have in mind is even possible.
Going to buy the DS923+ and am planning to run 3x12TB in a SHR. Planning on using 2 m.2 nvme as cache. And was wondering if it was wise to use the 4th bay for a dedicated SSD drive to run stuff like Plex on. Is this a smart thing to do? It seems like the right move, as I wouldn't sacrifice cache memory, and would still be able to run some stuff on an SSD.
Do you see any drawbacks on this setup? Would love your opinion!
