Synology ds925 vs terramaster f4-424 - Enquiries - 06-05-2025

Hello, what would you choose? I need a nas that can handle emby with movies and pictures. Also home assistant on a ssd. I think that is the only things I need. If the budget does not matter. I have an old synology now. I don't mind getting new drives. Will I get more speed and better quality with Terramaster or is it not a lot?

Kind regards
Jesper Eriksen

Both the Synology DS925+ and Terramaster F4-424 are solid NAS options, but there are a few key differences to consider.

Synology DS925+

Offers a very polished and user-friendly OS (DSM) with great app support.

Excellent for Emby and photo management, plus it handles Home Assistant on an SSD smoothly.

For remote streaming, keep in mind that the Ryzen CPU in the DS925+ limits hardware transcoding to 1080p, so 4K remote streaming might not be ideal.

Great for overall stability, updates, and ease of use.

Terramaster F4-424

Generally offers strong hardware at a lower price.

Good performance for Emby and media streaming.

The software ecosystem isn’t as polished as Synology’s, so it might require more hands-on management.

If you’re accessing the NAS mostly locally, either NAS will work fine performance-wise.

Speed and Quality
Locally, both NAS devices will perform well for your use case. If remote 4K transcoding is important, Synology’s Ryzen CPU may be a limitation due to 1080p transcoding caps. For local access and general media use, either will be fine.

If ease of use and software maturity matter most, Synology is a safer bet. If you’re comfortable with a bit more setup and want better hardware bang for your buck, Terramaster is worth considering.
