  Please help me decide
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-06-2025, 09:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I had an old POS WD 4 x 4TB NAS that decided to die. Now, everything is running in my home server (Proxmox + TrueNAS Scale)

Thinking about buying either a complete solution (6 to 8 bay QNAP, Terramaster or Synology) or DIYing a new one on my own.

Regardless of the solution I pick, I was planning on buying 3 x 8TB drives to start and grow from there as needed, which means adding a drive from time to time.

I heard this is very stressful on the other drives, takes a lot of time and in some instances is not advised. Is this the case? Should I save more and buy all drives at once?

With your experience, which is the best NAS solution for a plan like this? QNAP? Synology? Terramaster? TrueNAS Scale? Unraid?

I think I would prefer to build something in the Jonsbo N3 or N5, but I am concerned about the limitations of DIY NAS software when it comes to add more drives and expand the pools.

  Script for a list?
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-06-2025, 07:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello Gentleman - I'm hoping you can help since I can't find an answer to this anywhere in Synology or on the web from what I can see. I'm in the process of considating my medical files movies, tv shows etc. from iTunes and other sources into synology. Is there any script I can run that will give me just a simple list of names/titlas of the files I have in a folder so that I can ultimately take that list and enter it into a look up table so I can compare what I have and have moved?

I hope this is clear with what I'masking here but I haven't been able to find a thing to be able to get this out of my 920+ but it seems like something that should be easy to do?

Thank you for the time on this!

Rob

  Upgrade NAS HD's
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-06-2025, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi team, thanks for previous advice. You are the best. I have a QNAP T664 with 6 x 6TB HDD's in raid 5 config. I still have my previous T653D unit which does not have any HDD's installed. I would like to increase my storage capacity by upgrading the size of my HDD's while retaining all of my current data. I was thinking of using 10 or 12TB drives. My questions is how to go about this? Can I replace one drive at a time and let the system rebuild the drive before moving onto the next drive, until all six are replaced? Or do I load up my T653D with the new drives and then copy all of the data from the T664. Once the data has been copied I would need to move the drives from the T653D and place them into the T664. I hope this makes sense. Your advice would be most welcome before I commence this task.

Regards - Mark from Australia.

  What should I do
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-06-2025, 01:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I bought the QNAP ts 473a to get a home nas. Left synology because they were getting to business focused. I am still finding the nas approach requires IT maintenance from me. Should I have just gone with home server and storage. Can I convert the QNAP to home server? It seems using container is clunky and just more maintenance.

  transfer speed super low
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-04-2025, 02:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I've already tried everything - synology support, my ISP support, tried all home configuration, LAN speed is ok like 200-300MB/s, but remotely goes down even below 100kB/s, my internet speed is 900/900mbs and it really works on my computer. My friend has ds923+ and just to try he gave me his link to download and transfer from his NAS is +50MB/s. I connect my (and I setup his nas the same way) via ddns (synology.me). I even bought ugreen dxp4800 plus and the speed remotely is similar. Can you help me somehow? Thank you
Shema

  Thoughts on Orico
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-04-2025, 02:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey Mate,

been loving your thoughts on the Orico CF1000 - wondering what your thoughts are in comparison to something like the DS918+ that I'm already running, in particular in relation to Plex, which we're heavy users of.

How do you go about installing Plex on the Orico? Is it a Linux shell that you install via, or would the use case to install it with Docker? The OS Orico are using is a bit of a black box to me at this stage, vs Synology with their modified Linux implementation.

Bang for buck, it's definitely there compared to other Intel-based systems with that drive capacity, and I'm IT savvy (not terribly afraid of Docker), but the family acceptance factor is highly desirable.

Cheers,

Andrew

  Aoostar WTR Max strange practices
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-03-2025, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi! I have followed your reviews of the WTR Max from Aoostar with great interest. Seems to be a good fit for my needs. However, Aoostar seem to never have it in stock, only occassionally offering pre-sales of certain configurations. I am curious why this may be the case. Sales tactics? Lack of parts?

Legacy NAS's, failing HDD's, and time for upgrade?
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-03-2025, 08:55 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Gents! I have a Synology DS212J (2012) and doing rsync/hyper backup jobs to a QNAP TS-231 (2015). Running an SHR volume in the DS212J with two 3TB drives. QNAP, been running each disk as separate volumes, each receiving a Hyperbackup rsync weekly, and then a multi-version backup as well nightly. I keep the TS-241 in other location in house and pop out one of the drives to keep off site and rotate them periodically. Mostly family photos/videos, family documents like financial/medical. I have also been considering cloud backup for an easier off-site backup. Synology C2 might be the easiest thing and cost about the same as Backblaze for 2TB storage, with backups approaching 2.5TB. 1 drive failed on QNAP, and 1 drive getting read errors now in Synology, seems like time to consider upgrade, to take advantage of snapshot replication/ransomware protection. Looking at ds923/5+ ds423/5+. Would like to backup kids PCs as get to college, iphone photo backup, and do Synology photos. Thoughts?

  Best upgrages for DS918+
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-03-2025, 08:55 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am seeking advice on the best upgrades for my Synology DS918+. My primary use is hosting 30-40+ containers, and the current bottleneck is RAM. I do not use Surveillance Station or Plex on this NAS>
I have concerns about RAM upgrades causing data corruption due to the CPU limitations of this model. I am also open to considering M.2 upgrades if they would be beneficial for my container-heavy workload.
What are the most reliable RAM and M.2 upgrades for the DS918+ to improve performance for containerization without risking data integrity? Or should I get a new NAS/Hardware instead of pushing DS918+ to the limit?

  RS1221+ Memory
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-02-2025, 11:31 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi. Read your article regarding unofficial memory upgrades. Just got my RS1221RP+ a couple days ago but yep, only 4gb of memory installed. I'm interested to know how the gear will react if I installed the two 32gb Kingston memory modules. I have never exceeded the listed capacity of a piece of equipment and being able to do this would be a real plus. My son is putting together a AI system that requires a large amount of memory & being able to allocate half of the 64gb of memory into a vm for him would be ideal. I am by no means a hardware expert but seems installing non-ecc memory would defeat the internal process programmed into this NAS but, if it is still a good option as indicated by at least one persons comments then I'm willing to go at it as well. Let me know if you would please.
