TRAID to RAID 5? |

Is it possible to start with TRAID and at a later date migrate over to RAID 5? I'm currently using two salvaged 6TB's and tomorrow I will be adding two 4TB's. I'm not sure of the health of the two 6TB's (running a SMART test on them right now) so I will probably replace them with two more 4TB's at some point.

Synology Plex NAS Upgrade |

I am looking to upgrade my home NAS. I use it for backups, file storage, but primarily as a Plex server.
At the moment I have a basic 2 bay setup - Synology DS223j with 2 x 8TB drives on SHR. It's OK.
I want to upgrade to a 4 bay (or more) enclosure to try future-proof my setup and give me room to expand.
I want to stay Synology if at all possible.
From what I can see Synology have moved away from Plex-friendly enclosures.
What is my best option?

Switch Poe+ & 10gbe!! |

I give up! Searching & searching, I want o 19" rackmounted switch with poe+ (6 for powering cameras), 10gbe rj45-ports (at least two of them), and to remove my old switch also 24 port switch. Can not find any good switch but cost too much, there must be some options out there for this solution. To put even more demands, It does not need to be managed, and could also be fanless. Too much demands perhaps, but this is what I want.
Any idea although this is not a nas-request, I have already a Syn RS422+ with 10gbe card..
And, thx for all the wonderful youtubes I watch!!

Synology 224+, 2025 4 bay models and a quandary |

Love your output, which led me to a 224+ which I love. It runs 2x16tb IronWolf Pro and I am happy, but, have also acquired another 2x16 IronWolf Pros from someone who has changed horses and gone a different route, so was thinking of 4225+ or even 9225+ for best leverage of hdds. Until the little bombshell of 2 days ago. My in use pair of HDDs in the 224+ might, if I read things correctly, go straight into a 4 bay successor, but the new, currently spare pair of HDDs might not. What to do? I could stay as I am with no cost but 2 unused HDDs, go for the 4125+ or 9225+ or even go for a 923+ Interesting problem hence this message. Many, many thanks and pls keep up the content. Love it!

TOS6 - Bootloader/OS location |

I want to set up a new F8 Plus in 5 drive R5 or TRAID config. The bootloader & OS takes up space on 2 of my NVMe drives reducing the overall pool size. I'm using all 4TB drives and have 3 slots free. Does it make sense to install a smaller drive, perhaps 1TB for the bootloader and keep all of my 4TB drives free for my RAID array? This still leaves me 2 slots for future expansion. This is brand new and I have no data so I can rebuild it if warranted.
Thanks,
Dave
P.S. Love your videos, they helped me decide on which NAS to get and are helping me set it.

more smaller or less bigger disks in still raid5/ even maybe 6 |

I was searching for topics on this but I see 'm not finding them, or overlooking.
HD prices are high (for my perception), when a disk fails a bigger disk hurts financially more than a small one outside of warranty. I'm not a company with a big budget. In this use case I'm aiming for just one (future maybe max 2 volumes)
How are more smaller or less bigger disks or (still raid5/ SDR-1 even maybe 6 SDR2 ) in the balance if i need to invest in more expensive NAS with way more bays. I'm looking for my replacement Syn412+ which has the 4 disks occupied in Syn SDR1.
Basic question is : Is it from your perspective better to invest in a way more expensive NAS with more bays, or accept the restrictions with less bays and bigger drives with higher replacements costs if they fail. (backup regime etc in place)

I have been investigating an updated replacement for an EOL NetGear RN422 initially acquired back in 2019 !
With basic specs of Intel® Atom C3338 Dual Core Processor, 2GB DDR4, Drive Bays 2
No further explanation warranted lol !
The two units I put to scrutiny are the Asustor 5404T and the QNAP TS-464 after much scrutiny I decided upon the QNAP TS-464 based on my use case and what appears to be a vastly larger amount of peer based user community resources – albeit understanding the configuration terminology etc. may be a steeper hill to climb !
I am posting this plethora of questions for one simple reason I rest firmly in the school of “Fail to Plan …Plan to Fail” !
The hardware configuration I plan on assembling consist of the following and I plan to use the NAS as both a media server for locally stored media files hopefully via Jelly Fin and for serving files for primarily PDF’s MS Office .docx, .pptx, .xlsx etc.
Ø QNAP TS-464 4-Bay vendor states pre-configured with 8GB of RAM and QTS 5.0.1 Operating System pre-installed , Intel Celeron N5095
Ø Crucial RAM 16GB Kit (2x8GB)
Ø Seagate IronWolf Pro 10Tb NAS Internal Hard Drive HDD x 2
Ø Western Digital 2TB WD Red SN700 NVMe M.2 SSD x 2
HERE ARE MY QUESTIONS STATED AS SUCCINCTLY AS POSSIBLE
I have studied to the point of information overload on what might be the best way to configure the drives. In regard to storage pools, volumes thick, thin, static etc. Note I have little to no desire to use caching as I see very little benefit from it due to its primary focus on serving up small files quicker etc.
I am looking for suggestions/advice on QNAP ecosystem configuration/provisioning based on my stated use?
Since the retailer of the QNAP TS-464 is an unpopulated enclosure and the vendor proclaims the OS QTS 5.0.1 is pre-installed this begs to question were exactly is it installed? When I upgrade the memory to 16 GB and install the new drives will I have to reinstall the OS ? or is the OS installed on the 4GB Flash Memory simply requiring me boot it up and add the drives once the OS has loaded ? If the latter is the case is there a wy I can force th OS to load to the NVME’s to use them for the smoother /faster operational speed they might bring to the table ?
Is the hardware I have chosen the best use of $$$ seeing my minimalist understanding of what the two NVME’s will bring to the table in terms of daily use would I be better off expanding the HDD capacity to 4 x Seagate IronWolf Pro 10Tb NAS Internal Hard Drives configured in a RAID 5 configuration were I could gain the additional storage/file hosting of 30Tb and utilizing one 10Tb to store parity information while dropping the NVME’s ? Thereby creating and environment with good balance between data protection, increased practical useable capacity, and speed ? I have had very good luck with the Seagate IronWolf PRO’s to date !
Thanks in advance for reading my unbelievably lengthy post !

Morning all,
Whilst still deliberating whether to but a new system, and if so, which system/manufactruer, I’ve just noted in the last 24 hours or so that the prices on the UK UGREEN NAS site have gone up a good 10%, the 8 bay unit now being £1430 as opposed to £1300, the NVME device £1030 instead of around £870 I think it was..
Amazon.uk still selling under old prices…
Tarrifs in action?
