  NAS and Hard Drive
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-08-2023, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I need a NAS for a small two-person office. A storage server. I have several older Synology Drives bought in 2014. I do not understand the new memory and new 2x800 Cache add on to Synology Drives. Nor do I understand how much memory I should buy. Also, are the Synology Enterprise HDD series better than the WD or other HDs? Please suggest a Synology Drive setup.

  NAS-raid recommendation
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-08-2023, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I need advice or recommendation to upgrade my current storage and backup system. I am a non-professional photographer and writer, not an expert but I am fluent in computer systems and usage. Currently, I use an iMac with an external G-Drive Raid 0, 8TB, and a bunch of WD external drives for backup purposes, and Dropbox for cloud backup. Although comfortable with WD, I am considering an SYNOLOGY NAS-raid enclosure to upgrade and consolidate my current setup. I am considering having an 8 or 12-TB raid 1 for primary backup and multiple JBOD drives for archiving and secondary backups. Any configuration and product recommendation will be highly appreciated thank you.

  Synology DS1821+ with Seagate ST4000VN000
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-08-2023, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

We are planning to purchase a Synology DS1821+ and we want to use 4 HDDs from our old Seagate 4 bay NAS.
The disk model is the Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 with firmware SC46.
The disk are not in the compatibility list in the Synology site. Can I use them?

Asus Lockerstor NVME as Raid6 and SSD for Proxmox
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-08-2023, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

For the Asus Lockerstor Gen 2 (either 2-bay, 4-bay or 6-bay), is it possible to install proxmox + truenas on the SSD (mirrored) and then use the 4 NVME for storage. This way one gets the fast NVME-based NAS?

  Affordable NAS for Plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-08-2023, 02:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there. Been watching your YouTube videos but still feeling a little lost so thought I'd reach out.

Looking for a 2 bay NAS to use primarily as a Plex Media Server.

Want to go as cheap as I can without risking a huge sacrifiece on performance.

The majority of my video files are 1080p (H.264), with the odd 4K (H.265 10bit) file every now and then.

Everything is pretty much being done locally, and only very occasionally over the internet. And I don't believe I need/use transcoding as I don't have a Plex Pass.

The most expensive options I'm looking at are:

- Synology DS220+
- QNAP TS-253D-4G
- QNAP TS-231K

Other than that, my other options within budget are probably:

- Synology DS220j
- Synology DS218
- TerraMaster F2-210
- Western Digital My Cloud EX2 Ultra
- TerraMaster F2-221
- TerraMaster F2-422

Appreciate any help you're able to provide.

Thanks in advance!

Swapping HDDs into a new NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-07-2023, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, we frequently talk about HDDs dying, and replacing them. But what about NAS or RAID controller dying? Has anyone ever tried pulling HDDs out of a Synology NAS and putting them into a newer Synology NAS? In the correct order of course. Would this be a valid way to get access to a RAID array? It sounds very risky to me, but I wonder if it might work.

  All rounder NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-07-2023, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
I've been looking for a NAS for a while now but I can't decide on which one.
My requirements are:
Plex (internal and external use) 1080p mainly but I would like to have the option of 4K as I have a 4K tv but never used it as 4K
I have a proxmox server, I was thinking that I might be able to connect to the nas as an iSCSI or SAN for the OS of VM's so possibly be able to use m.2 or something quick for the OS. I know that some NAS' can have m.2 as a storage pool instead of caching. Really not a deal breaker as it was just an idea.
Low(ish) power. As i've already got a proxmox server I don't really need / want another server.
Some what quiet, I don't mind fan noise.
I need to host some docker containers and Home assistant on the NAS too so i can turn off my proxmox server at night for a bit.
I've been leaning towards the DS920+ and then just stick some SSD's in my server in raid 0 and back up the VM's to the NAS so if the proxmox vm drives fail then no big deal.
Thanks,
Will

  DS1522+ SSD storage pool
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-07-2023, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, soon I am going to upgrade from Synology DS220j to something more powerful. I am trying to decide between DS1522+ and DS923+. As far as I know, for this moment the only thing, that DS923+ can do and DS1522+ can not is storage pool on M.2 SSD. Are there any informations if Synology is going to bring this feature to DS1522+ in future updates?

  Help
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-07-2023, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi
Having watched your videos I’m super impressed, however at 68 years old I’m struggling.
Do you or do you know of anyone who can log into my NAS Qnap and set it up remotely. Obviously for a fee. I’m only looking for a media server to view and edit photos, to store and play music from. Ideally if it can be connected to google home that would be great.
Any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully received.
Sooty if it’s a daft question but I’m hopeless!
Many thanks in advance
Duncan

  Laptop SSD
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-07-2023, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I need a new SSD for my laptop and the P5 Plus, KC3000 and sn770 are almost the same price, are these good options?. thinking about power consumption and temperature what SSD would be the best fit? How much does the ssd actually affect battery in normal usage as I've seen conflicting information online.
