  NVME heat sinks synology?
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-06-2023, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I was considering buying two 1 TB WD Western Digital Red SN700 Solid-State Drive for read-write cache in my synology DS1821+ NAS. you mentioned heat sinks in your youtube video. Will I need to purchase separate heat sinks and if so do you have any recommendations for which model#? will my NAS accomodate such heat sinks?

thank you very much!

  NAS vs Dropbox
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-06-2023, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I am iCloud and Dropbox users. I bought WD my cloud ultra in the past but with no luck (I am not that tech person, found it a bit complicated and was worried about security). I am thinking to give NAS another try. I use Dropbox and iCloud almost as internal hard drive, and work perfectly for me. But I am looking for long term solution, also to store personal photos etc. I am a Mac user, so I need something easy to use and work well with Macs, iPad etc. Do you think NAS is good option for me, and if so what you recommend? I am also thinking about turning Mac mini into NAS, what you think about that? thank you very much

  Seagate 20TB Ironwolf Pro ST20000NT001
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-06-2023, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I have just bought a Seagate 20TB Ironwolf Pro ST20000NT001 and inserted in to my DS920+ which is already populated with 2 10TB Ironwolf Pros.

I can't seem to get this new drive to work.

I am running DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 4.

It shows up on the drive list, but I can't create a storage pool or add it to the current one. It says it can't add because there is no health status.

What could be the problem?

Thanks

  New NAS choice
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-06-2023, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear Sir

Currently I have had a DS1513+ with 5x3Tb in SHR2 for 9 years. I am gradually looking at a new system for streaming (via a TV box), backup, surveillance and downloading (newsgroups, ...)
I was looking at the DS1821+ for a long time, but that didn't seem like a huge upgrade. The DS1823xs+ has now been released, but you have a number of limitations, e.g. choice of HDD and the like.
Which device would you recommend as a good replacement for my ds1513+?

Thank you in advance
Kenny

  Plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-06-2023, 06:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Looking to upgrade my Plex server, everything I see is pointing towards a NAS. Newbie when it comes to NAS and having a hard time deciding if the QNAP TS-464 or synology ds920+/923+ would be best. Have even looked at a cheaper DAS option in the Terramaster d5-300c.
As most of my media is H265 I do a fair amount of transcoding, don’t have or really care about 4K media. My family uses my server, all over Canada and some in the USA. Also unsure the best drives to put into the device, WD or Seagate seem to be good, any reason to not get the largest TB size available? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Happy to provide more info if needed. Thanks in advance.

  NAS drive recommendations?
Posted by: CharmPeddler - 03-06-2023, 03:07 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have some questions about optimizing my first NAS setup for my needs.

QNAP TS-673 (not the "a" version).
I just purchased this (used) and is not yet set up.

I have 6x 6 terabyte hard drives.
Three of the drives are wiped clean and ready for install. Two of them have data from my previous desktop that I used as individual JBOD type setup.

The NAS has spots for two m.2 SSDs.

I want to be able to run my own home lab on this with Plex, a few containers, including pie hole, maybe a Minecraft server for the family, and ability to run OwnCloud for family google photos and apple drive replacement.

I plan on upgrading the memory from the stock two gigs to at least 32 gigs and maybe 64 gigs.

Should I buy an SSD for the drive slot number one {1ssd &5hdd}? My assumption is that will help with performance because the system will utilize that drive slot for the OS.
Combined with that, or possibly Alternatively, what can I actually do with the m.2 slots. Is that only for drive cashing? And do I have any direct control over it or will the system utilize it as it needs and I might or might not see benefits from it?

Or will the speeds be just fine with the WD Red HHDs?

  NAS Selection
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-05-2023, 09:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I currently own a DS218+ with 2x 4TB hard drives.
Currently using Synology Hybrid Raid meaning I only have 4 TB of storage available.

I recently ran out of storage and was considering my options:
1) Replace 4TB drives with 8/12 TB drives.
2) Buy a 4 bay unit (DS423+, DS920+, DS923+) with 4x 4TB drives
3) Run plex on other device and use NAS only for storage & surveillance station
4) Any other recommendations ...

I mainly use the device for:
- Photo back-up
- Plex media server
- Surveillance station (1 IP, probably will add 3 more in the future)
- (some dockers containers)
- (file back-up)

I was considering buying the DS923+, but since I mainly use it for Plex and it doesn't have an integrated graphic CPU I didn't yet. My current setup doesn't have it but this does cause some issues sometimes when streaming from Plex.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance!
