I work with geotechnical engineer who has about 3TB of work data (drawings, reports, numerical modelling, spreadsheets, soil tests, survey, etc) who needs to move from various cloud services to a decent NAS structure. My personal computer is a Mac and a lot of my work is done on Windows PCs. The main uses I would like to get out of my NAS:
- File server with cloud access and version history
- Photo library (it is my hobby and I have ~50GB of photos on (paid) Google Photos
- Book library (as a researcher and consultant I have ~100GB of books, conference proceedings and whatnots that I would like to organize on a Calibre or Kavita environment
- Reference management storage (Mendeley or Zotero)
- Possibly a movie/series library from downloaded files, unlikely 4K for now.
As for the book library, I will need Docker, so it seems DS220j is not my best option. Should I go for a DS220+? Maybe something better? Please help, I am getting lost in videos.

Synology for photos and occassional Plex |

Hi! I've been going through your articles and YT videos and oh my, what a great content do you produce! Thank you for all of that. I've been looking into getting a Synology NAS for use at home. I currently have QNAP TS219p II, which is very old and doesn't support backup to Backblaze nor Plex anymore. QNAP system is a bit convoluted and from what I gather, a Synology would be a better choice for me, especially that it supports live photos from Apple devices. Anyway, I need a simple NAS to be used at home, mostly to serve as my photo archive. I also plan on using Plex a bit, but it's second priority. I was thinking 220+, 720+ or 723+, with the latter being a bit too expensive for me. I'd prefer to spend ~400, maybe 500 EUR. Where I live, the 220+ is 340 EUR, the 720+ is 450 EUR and 723+ is 550 EUR. I have a notion that 223+ would be great for me if only it was already available. What is your advice?

Synology DS1522+ |

I’m looking to purchase the following NAS setup:
Synology DS1522+.
Synology 800GB SNV3410 NVMe M.2 2280 SSD
Synology E10G22-T1-Mini RJ45 10G Ethernet Module
Based on Synology’s HDD Compatibility List & excluding the Synology drives (due to cost), it appears the highest capacity choices are a Western Digital 14TB WD Red Plus NAS HDD or Seagate IronWolf Pro 12 TB NAS HDD. Which of these two HDD’s would you recommend?

How Many Volumes Should I Create |

Hello from Brazil. I'm a completely NAS-newbie-user, coming out from a dead 4TB Seagate Personal Cloud device, and who has recently purchased a QNAP TS-251D plus two 6TB hard drives.
I mostly have used my Personal Cloud for Plex streaming on my own, with no other users at home and, now, watching your 2022 guide series of videos (the next one will be part 3), as I see the vast possibilities for my new real NAS, I just don't know how many volumes should I create on my RAID.
I want to keep using it as a Plex media server, but I think it would be nice to reserve a volume for backing up personal data and/or creating a personal cloud for my mom, for example.
So, I just don't know how to split the total amount of available RAID space. Would you have a suggestion for me?
Thank you very much, and congratulations for the videos; they are so well explained and and you talk slowly so we foreigners can completely understand.
Regards,
Wladimir D.

Hello,
I have a DS1513+ with 4-20tb drives and one 16-tb drive, Western Digital Pro Red. I need to upgrade for additional space/drives. My primary use is pc backup and media server. I was thinking of the DS1821+, but have been waiting to see if a 23+ will be available.
Anyhow, to my question, it looks like my drives won’t be compatible, thank you synology. What is the best alternative and/or would a newer synology work with these drives.
Thank you,
Michael

I do Phot and video editing. I bought this as an alternative to having a ton of HDs to sift trough I basically wanted 1 Archive then keep the extras in a closest some where.
I set it up, put in 4 drives and made a RAID 5 array. dumped 5TB from a drive shucked it and attempted to add it to the array. it said it would take 90 hours to add. Ok, let it run.
Next morning i get up and i guess my computer went to sleep, but it kicked me out to the RAID manager program. I had changed the password, but not i cannot get in at all. The box is over there doing something. the lights are flickering and i hear the hard drives working. I et answer from Terra Master.
In the future can i just pull a smaller drive and replace it with a larger one? will it recognize and expand the array? This whole thing feels like a mess.

NAS Raid 0 Drive upgrade |

Would like a step by step for easiest way to change/upgrade 1 drive from a 2 drive synology 220+ to expand storage. The NAS only keeps camera footage, and I'm not worried about keeping any footage, just want the NAS setup (settings, FTP info, etc) to carry over. I think i will have to re-install DSM7 and then do a restore, using hyperbackup? Wanted the easiest way to do this, using a second home synology NAS 1019+ for keeping any generated backups.
Going to keep it Raid 0 just to continue to store camera footage from surveillance station and an external camera that uses FTP to copy its footage, 3 cameras total so far.
Thanks!
