I've found the NASCompares Youtube videos extremely helpful. Thanks for your great work.

It's still very overwhelming, so, if there is an easy answer, then let me know. If not, then I will continue researching, probably mostly through more of your videos.

I'd like to back up my data, which right now, barely exceeds 2 TB, and will be less once I remove duplicates and delete files. So, I think that 8TB will be more than enough for now.

Mostly, I want to be able to remotely organize my files from wherever I am, and am also learning about Cloud services, virtual machines, etc, so want something that can handle that.

What are some systems that will fit the bill, and should I trust buying something used?

I have something of a strange request. Im trying to streamline a portable processing solution. Rather than running 2 NAS and two PC terminal machines I wonder about purchasing two of the h1288X fully equipped and using them as a PC/NAS in one.
Software I need to run is not GPU based just ram but I see 128Gb option and it is not hugely taxing. However it must run win 10/11 and requires two monitors.
Questions,
- Could I run a virtual Windows 10 on an h1688x use a USB or thunderbolt graphics adapter to have two monitors? Turning the NAS into a terminal could be hugely advantageous to me.

Hi, found you video on youtube while doing some research about NAS.
wanted to purchase the my first NAS and needed some advices.
Im a video editor and wanted to store all the videos as well as music/ photos. thinking of purchasing DS1621+enclosure and upgrade the RAM, 10GB card and perhaps ssd cache in order to be able to edit videos directly on NAS. if this NAS is powerful enough for the use?
I do have 2 16TB seagate iron wolf drives at hand and wanted to buy another one. storage will be added later on.

My current server has a 40GB Qsfp+ NIC. I plan to use a Qsfp to 4 x Sfp+ breakout cable and would like to get the above mentioned QNAP QSW-M1208-8C, and then possibly aggregate a few of those sfp+'s. My question is, is there any reason that wouldn't work? Second question, can i use this switch for both LAN traffic as well as for regular ethernet traffic, or would it be better to keep individual devices connected to the net as they currently are and use this switch strictly for LAN traffic?
Bear with me please as I am a rookie when it comes to 10gb+ networking Im about ready to pull the trigger on this switch, however I would like confirmation that it will work for my intended purpose.

just read your comparisson between DS920+ and DS923+. Your knowledge is truly amazing

I am planning on upgrading from DS918+ to DS920+ because my 918 got fried by lightning.. the 4 x 4TB Seagate Iron Wolf NAS drives seemed to have survived. I took the drives and simply plugged them into an external HDD enclosure and attached it to a windows pc, just to test if the drives still work / spin up.

In doing so, i did not take note of the sequence in which the drives were sitting in the 918 Bays - I also cannot remember which RAID configuration i chose at the time of installing the 918 - However, of the 16TB drive capacity, i had 12 TB usable space, so that means it must have been RAID 5 i think.

My question to you is, will I be able to insert my 4 drives into the newer 920+ and retrieve the existing data on these drives? Will the operating system pick up the RAID configuration, even if I insert the drives in a different sequence? Or will I have to format these drives?

Big fan of your channel ! I've tested hi-fi audio servers that cost a kidney but could not hear any improvement over music streamed from my old noisy nas. The advantages of those hi-fi products were silence (fanless solution) and quick boot time (30sec roughly).
I am looking for a fast booting network storage solution located in my living room next to my audio amplifier that will be switched on when needed and will not run 24 hours a day. My amplifier does not need more than sharing over SMB.
Moreover, it could be a nice addition if I could also be able to play movies on my 4k tv.

My previous experience with nas is rather old as I own a QNAP ts 219+ which is noisy as hell and takes 5 minutes to be on line.

Is there by chance a Nas you could think of that could meet my needs?

Not looking for "How to steps", just need some input on what you think the best approach would be.
Client wants a "Drop Box" functionality so he can upload photo's to the drop box so customers can access them. The NAS choices are an old DS115j or a DS718+. The DS718+ is used for nightly PC image backups for 20 PC's.

The NAS will sit behind a firewall (pfSense). I presently have the DS115j configured with an account that can be accessed by anyone provided the link and they can view and download the images but do not have any write rights or access to any other NAS options/functions. When the user logs in, he see's the "Files" folder and can navigate thru that to see other photo folders.

On the administration side, the owner has his own admin account and I have the synology Drive installed on his PC as well as having a mapped drive to the NAS so they can just drag 'n drop folders and photo's.

It works but are you aware of a better method that I'm mising?

Currently have both at home. And instead of buying a new NAS, I would like to buy a newer AM5 socket Motherboard/CPU combo that is on sale at my local micro center to upgrade my work (CAD and GAMING) rig and use the slightly used or older hardware for the NAS.

The Sandy Bridge is used by my daughter for gaming and homework with no complaints.
And since it seems to be the less efficient of the two systems, would like to leave that one alone since its not on 24/7
And use the newer 8 core 65w for the NAS since it will be on 24/7. I currently pay .30/kwh.

I will be sourcing additional parts on the used market but can extend the budget further If its used to for my AM5 rig.

I would like to be able to stream movies and maybe host my website locally in the near future to reduce hosting cost.

Hi, I'm buying the QNAP TS-453E NAS, a 2GbE switch (QNAP QSW-1105-5T, and a Startech US2GA30 2.5GbE USB-A to eth adapter. My mobo is a Z370 Aorus Gaming 3 which has 2 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 connectors (1xType-A, 1xType-C).
1. To set up port trunking. My eth connections will be (a) PC to switch via mobo Killer E2500 LAN port (1 Gps), and (b) the above USB eth adapter, from the USB 3.1 Gen 2 connector Type-A to the switch. The switch will then have 2 cables going into the 2.5GbE ports of the NAS. Question is whether this is sufficient in order to use port trunking on the NAS. Also, is there a better way to do this?
2. In your review of the NAS, you mention "The USB ports on the QNAP TS-453E NAS are another USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gb/s port and two USB 2.0 ports. The 3.2 port can be used for 2.5/5GbE-to-USB adapters". Can I use this as a 3rd connection between the NAS & switch, or NAS and PC?
