whch company better Synology VS QNAP NAS

Hi all.  I'm not an active enthusiast for home media, but I'm reasonably tech and I do a refresh of my tech every 5 to 8 years.  I've just upgraded all my iMac and data storage to NVMe drives and am looking at a NAS drive for both data backup but also and mainly as a media server for both my sonos and my 4K TV. 

I currently have :

a samsung QE43Q60r 4K HDR tv. 
a yamaha RX-V373 AV receiver.  (has 4K HDMI inputs, also USB input but I don't think that is suitable for 4K video)
lots of films in H.246 MP4 on various SSD's. 
lots of music in MP3 

looking at these it seems I would need a HDMI output from the NAS drive to direct play 4K? I assume this is better than just relying upon the smart TV connection to the wifi network? 

I'm drawn toward the synology drives as they seem quite simple and reliable.. but I'm open to suggestions. 

I'll be a single user to a single TV and I can prepare all the content into H.264 and MP4 in advance so no transcoding is needed (i think). 

What you your thoughts.. have I fundamentally misunderstood how to run this, do i need to change my AV receiver? should I be looking at something other than a NAS?  any assistance much appreciated.

To store Playstation games on a NAS you have to use hardware, such as a Rock Pi which supports USB OTG and Ethernet to set up an iSCUSI LUN which the PlayStation can use. Most NAS devices (I'm aware of) don't have a driver to support that functionality via their LUN tools, if they did the additional hardware would be unnecessary.


Game Reactor also did a setup and demo video using a PS4 and QNAP NAS. Gary Explains did something similar with a Synology NAS. Searching for Making a piSCSI USB Drive — Part 2" should reveal a write up by Matt Olan which may be useful.

Hello, I'm looking for highest performance from my DS1621+. I ordered 6x WD RED 14TB HDD, I intend to use RAID 10 because I think that's the highest performance, I think that's what I heard? My question is about RAM - I've blown the budget on all the upgrades so far (2x WD SN850X NVMe - 6x HDD - 2x 10gb UniFi switches). I bought a cheap 10gbe PCIe adapter, it didn't work, so I bought the Synology PCIe adapter (ouch!). I don't know if I can afford to max out on Synology RAM. But I also for sure can't afford to buy cheap ECC RAM and then have to upgrade to Synology RAM. I couldn't find a video about off-brand non-Synology RAM, so I'm wondering if you have advice on what type of ECC RAM I should buy?

Hello, I've already purchased everything, DS1621+, six WD RED PRO 14TB, two 10gb switches, and two WD BLACK SN850X NVME SSD. I'm aware that the SN850X are too much, the NAS can't do PCIe 4.0, I wasted money on un-used performance. My question today is, I bought two SN850X 2TB, but it seems nobody else is doing that. Everyone else is doing 1TB or less. Should I use 1TB NVMe instead? Is 2TB NVMe too big? Did I also waste my money on too much NVMe SSD?

Hello, I'm looking for the ultimate in high performance in my Synology DS1621+. I have 2x WD RED PLUS and 4x WD RED PRO (14TB HDD). I plan to use RAID 10 because I believe it has higher performance than SHR-2. My question is, will RAID 10 work OK with two different models of WD RED HDD?

Hello, Im looking to buy and setup a Plex server using a Synology DS220+.

I am currently having some issues with HDD compatibility. The synology website mentions that the Seagate Ironwolf (4TB) ST4000VN006 is compatiable but the only one I can find for purchese from Amazon UK is ST4000VNZ06 which is not mentioned on Synology's website.

Is the ST4000VNZ06 okay to use? If you have any recomendations for better drives I'd be glad to hear it.

One other factor that I would like your opinion on is noise. I would gladly spend a bit extra on drives that run a bit quiter!

I run a photography studio
SETUP: DS1821+ with 8x20TB WD Red Pros. Raid 5. I have a M1 Mac mini without a 10gbe port. I'm connecting the NAS directly to the Mac mini via ethernet.
MAIN USE: Backup 40TB of data per year. SD cards via reader on M1 Mac, transferring to folder on NAS.
SECONDARY USE: Browse Raw files, organize data, Transfer to portable SSDs for editing, transfer to portable HDDs via USB COPY as a second copy. Upload JPG files (10tb/yr) to cloud for 3rd backup.
1. Will a 10gbe adaptor on the NAS and a "thunderbolt 4 to 10gbe" adaptor on the Mac mini increase my transfer speeds? I use Sandisk SD cards (170 MB/s) with a prograde memory card reader (capable of 1.25gb/s). Or am I bottlenecked somewhere?
2. Will installing NVME SSD add any benefit for my use? I will not be using this for plex or anything like that. Just a huge central HD for my studio. It would be nice to browse files quickly.
3. Will increasing RAM do anything for me?
Any other recommendations?

I have been researching NAS devices and have been comparing synology, qnap, and other versions.

It seems QNAP offers the best hardware for the price, as well as offers rack mount and desktop devices good hardware. I have been leaning towards rack mount but wasn't sure, I want to buy a device that will last for a long time.

2. 4GB up to 32/64gb
3. M.2 tiered or caching
4. 2.5 or 10gb but must be able to be upgradable to 10gb


This will be primary for NAS/storage / ISCSI/LUN, and capable to backup data offsite to another device amazon glacier, cloud provider via webdav.

If you can provide a cost-effective options to get the best bang for your buck, from any provider.
