Hi,
Long time listener, first time caller
Just hoping to get some advice on the following before I buy my first proper NAS. I’ve listened and watched a fair amount of content on here, but still not 100% on a couple of bits:
I’m leaning towards getting DS1522+, hopefully for file storage, access from anywhere (likely VPN, but not ruling out direct), would be interested in hosting some VMs, and perhaps playing with surveillance at some point. I’m probably looking at current requirement of 8tb data to be stored.
1) Are m.2 nvme or SSDs required for hosting decent VMs at a reasonable speed? If so, what would folks usually recommend here? Appreciate DS1522+ doesn’t support m2 nvme storage, but is it still possible and worth trying the unofficial route via CLI? If there’s enough risk with the unofficial storage route, would this make a case for going DS923+ and just one less bay?
2) Same question for RAM and VMs. Would 1x 16GB extra (24 total) be enough, or recommended to just ditch the RAM that comes with the unit and get 2x16GB?
3) HDDs - Leaning towards getting 3x 8tb. I’m seeing Ironwolf 8tb and Ironwolf Pro 8tb at roughly the same price? The non-pros look to be the only ones officially supported by Synology, plus the Pro looks to consume more power and slightly noisier. Are these good reasons enough to stick with the non-pro, or for the price would it be a no-brainier to get the pros?
4) Any advice on the number of bays/drives to begin with? 4x 6tb HDD and have the cheaper/quieter drives, or go 8tb HDD and have 2 spare for expansion/potential surveillance drive?
Thanks!

| Copy selected files between 2 Synology |

Hi,
I have DS918+ and my friend have DS923+. Obviously we are in 2 locations. We both make videos and store them in shared folders - I have access to his video folder and he have to mine. Sometimes I need to download a few of his video to my NAS. Right now we have to download to a PC and then -via LAN - to our server. We are looking for a way to copy selected files from one NAS to the other directly - so I can setup a copy of a few files in the evening (40-100 GB), turn off the PC and go to sleep.
The options I found basically is for synchronization so the whole his video folder would be mirrored on my NAS - I only need specific files.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Regards,
Dominik Gawriłow

| Degraded Storage Pool 1 |

I have had a Synology for years: DS214 play.
There are a few issues and I'm not sure how to proceed. Any help would be great!
I am gettting a message that my Storage Pool 1 is degraded.
When I went into Storage Manager on the HDD/SDD tab I'm told that Drive 1 and Drive 2 are both "Healthy".
On the Volume tab, I am told Volume 1 is "degraded". And I only have one volume.
On the Oveview tab, it originally told me I had, 2 drives - but one of them was "not initiated".
I have since tried to follow instructions to initiate drive 2. I have done this BUT I notice Drive 1 has RAID 1 and Drive 2 has BASIC RAID type. Not sure what this means.
I want to have Drive 2 setup as mirror of Drive 1.
But Drive 1 has degraded Storage Pool.
Drive 2 looks healthy, but has 557 bad sectors.
Do I need to setup a volume on Drive 2/ Storage Pool 2. How?
Do I need to replace both drives due to being degraded/ bad sectors?
How do I mirror Drive 1 to Drive 2?
Any help would be great? Thanks

I already have a Synology DS920+running happily with 4 x 16TB Ironwolf pro HDD and 20GB RAM, but I want to make use of a pile of 4TB Ironwolf HDDs I have spare. Hopefully simple question: DX517+ expansion unit, or a separate NAS, such as another DS920 or a DS923?
Primarily backup and media serving to 2.5gbe network.

Hi, I'll be using this setup to stream my Plex movies, 98% of which are 1080p (so no 4K). It'll only be me who is streaming, no 3rd parties. I don't really care if it's an old model as long as it works fine. Can you advise something on this information?

Hobbyist photographer, built a collection of of photographs across several generations, wish to share with family members across the world. Time to upgrade from Synology DS215. Been waiting for 2023 models not sure that they offer hoped for solution. Will need to last a long time so need to get it right. More important to get it right than meet budget.
Which NAS to get?

Hey Nas Compadres. I am trying to authenticate my dropbox account with Hybrid Backup 3 but I continue to recieve the error " Authentication Error. Failed to connect to cloud server".
Some forums I have seen said to open QTS in HTTP instead of HTTPS. I have no idea how or if I did it correct but nothing seems to work. Would love to pay for an hour google meet session to try diagnosing this?

Good evening,
As I saw video comparing Synology 2 bay NASes, thing that bothering me is maximal capacity of discs. In video is 18/20TB max and my question is: 18/20TB per disc or for device at all. As I am considering buying NAS with wish of having mirored 2x16TB (32TB in total), or even 2x20TB (40TB in total), I would like to know if device going to handle this.
Thank You in advance,
Regards,
Lucas

I live in the Caribbean and I run a small digital marketing/media agency where we do our own media work/editing.
I am interested in buying a NAS but I'm not sure if I should take that route, so I'll list my ideal workflow as well as limitations below and you can suggest the best options for my business:
Requests
- A storage system that offers redundancy
- To be able to edit videos directly from the storage
- Allow multiple persons to access the storage at the same time
Limitations
- Price: Because of where I live, things get expensive fast. With currency conversions, shipping costs & customs duty, it's easy to pay well over 3 times the initial price.
- Internet: Again due to location, my internet speed isn't always the best. At best right now I can receive 320mbps from my ISP. Can I use a NAS without it being limited by the internet speed my ISP provides (maybe through a LAN of some sort)?
Thanks
