  iSCSI LUN Shared area
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-14-2023, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a QNAP NAS that I would like to use an iSCSI LUN on, and I would also like the drive to be accessible on another PC for backup amongst other things. Is there a way to do this? Obviously I could use a standard network share for both PC’s but as I’m using it to store the users profile it needs to be available before that PC finishes recovering from standby which it doesn’t always achieve

QNAP TS-473A 10G nic + Video card PCIE Combo
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-14-2023, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello. I have been watching your videos on you tube and have been loving their content. I am coming up to speed quickly on NAS setup thanks to your insight. Thank you a ton for your work.

I have purchased a QNAP TS-473A for my home and will use it as a file server / media server / fun toy. I am 90% setup but the last step has me stuck. I would like to add a 10 Gig ethernet adapter and also add a video card. I purchased your recommended EDUP 10 gig nic card and I also have an MSI GTX 1050 ti GPU on hand as well. The problem is both of these will not fit at the same (the video card takes 2 slots). I am not quite sure the best way to go. I am willing to buy a different video card (is there a good one slot low profile card I should look at?) or I could get a different 10 gig solution and use the USB-C port perhaps for connectivity? I am not sure what the best combo here is. Money is not infinite but I don’t mind spending a little to get the best working within the physical constraints the

  New nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-14-2023, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (5)

Hi I’m currently using an old Wd Mycloud 2 tb that is unsupported with plex server on my Mac mini m2 pro.
I’m now looking to buy a new nas and have 2 or 3 3 tb Wd red hard drives spare.
I’m unsure which brand to go with Qnap 464 or the synology 923 or maybe something similar I download videos to a hard drive then transfer currently to the Wd Mycloud watching on a Sony android tv via the plex pass which I have paid for the premium service.
Any help would be very appreciated so I don’t throw my pounds at the wrong thing.

Thanks Adam.

Best drives for storage and media
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-13-2023, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I want fast access, will also use to store short videos of street events. I have a movie library 80 movies and growing. I have a 4 bay NAS but only want 3 dives in the raid config. I have a 10 TB drive, can I add three 8 TB drives and setup raid 5 and only use 8TB from the 10 TB drive. I want to have an isolated 2 tb secret drive. Is this possible and what do you recommend for the disk drives for fast access with me using Plex to show my movies.

  NAS Suggestion
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-13-2023, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good Day Sir.

I own a small wedding videography business. I currently own 5 WD 18TB Ext. HDDs for backup and multiple LaCie HDDs (3 copies). I came across NAS and thought of buying one.

Intended use of NAS:
1. I want it to be my backup solution and I thought of RAID10 so that I will have 2 copies of my data. 3rd copy will be stored on ext hdd.
2. Initially I will add 4 drives as required for RAID10, then I will add more later as my budget grows. My question here is, is it possible to add HDDs without loosing data in RAID10?
3. Should I buy now with Thunderbolt 4, so that transfer rates between my NAS and my PC would be fast.

I have limited knowledge of computer hardware and would really appreciate your suggestion. At first I was thinking about DAS however, didn't get much of information about it. I would consider DAS but I found it with NAS I can share data with my clients without uploading to cloud service.

Looking forward for your reply.

Thank you

  RAM for the Lockerstor AS6702T
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-13-2023, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear Nas Compares,

Following your nice videos and interesting articles I decided to buy an Asustor Lockerstor AS6702T. It will arrive tomorrow.

I came from a previous experience with Synology ds213air bought in 2013. Very disappointing for the slow performances.

I am an expert Linux user and want to use virtualisation features and NextCloud.

I would like to ask you what is your opinion about installing one single supplemental RAM module of 16 Gb that I already have or to buy two 8Gb modules to improve the virtualisation capacity.

I thank you very much for any time you will decide to dedicate answering me.

  Archive NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-13-2023, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

This NAS would be located on our network in another building to provide an archive location for mostly video files. I will be manually backing up my edit SSD's (16TB) at least weekly. A video server on our network will also use the NAS as an archive location and will periodically backup old videos automatically. Our network is currently 1GbE but I could see it being useful to have the ability to move this NAS closer to my edit station and potentially edit directly off it with a dedicated 10GbE port. If that increases the cost significantly though, I would probably prefer to stick to something that is solely used for archive purposes and spend the money on that. But if it fits in the budget of $3100, it might be useful to include.

We have mainly stuck to Synology in the past, although if there is a significant benefit to going with another manufacturer, we would be open to it.

  DS1522+ RAM HDD Qs
Posted by: MrCisco - 03-13-2023, 10:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Hi,

Long time listener, first time caller Smile

Just hoping to get some advice on the following before I buy my first proper NAS.  I’ve listened and watched a fair amount of content on here, but still not 100% on a couple of bits:

I’m leaning towards getting DS1522+, hopefully for file storage, access from anywhere (likely VPN, but not ruling out direct), would be interested in hosting some VMs, and perhaps playing with surveillance at some point.  I’m probably looking at current requirement of 8tb data to be stored.

1) Are m.2 nvme or SSDs required for hosting decent VMs at a reasonable speed?  If so, what would folks usually recommend here?  Appreciate DS1522+ doesn’t support m2 nvme storage, but is it still possible and worth trying the unofficial route via CLI?  If there’s enough risk with the unofficial storage route, would this make a case for going DS923+ and just one less bay?

2) Same question for RAM and VMs.  Would 1x 16GB extra (24 total) be enough, or recommended to just ditch the RAM that comes with the unit and get 2x16GB?

3) HDDs - Leaning towards getting 3x 8tb.  I’m seeing Ironwolf 8tb and Ironwolf Pro 8tb at roughly the same price?  The non-pros look to be the only ones officially supported by Synology, plus the Pro looks to consume more power and slightly noisier.  Are these good reasons enough to stick with the non-pro, or for the price would it be a no-brainier to get the pros?

4) Any advice on the number of bays/drives to begin with?  4x 6tb HDD and have the cheaper/quieter drives, or go 8tb HDD and have 2 spare for expansion/potential surveillance drive?

Thanks!

Copy selected files between 2 Synology
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-13-2023, 07:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I have DS918+ and my friend have DS923+. Obviously we are in 2 locations. We both make videos and store them in shared folders - I have access to his video folder and he have to mine. Sometimes I need to download a few of his video to my NAS. Right now we have to download to a PC and then -via LAN - to our server. We are looking for a way to copy selected files from one NAS to the other directly - so I can setup a copy of a few files in the evening (40-100 GB), turn off the PC and go to sleep.
The options I found basically is for synchronization so the whole his video folder would be mirrored on my NAS - I only need specific files.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Regards,
Dominik Gawriłow
