  Synology NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-17-2023, 06:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I need a NAS rack setup for file backup, massive video and picture backup, Plex server, vpn setup, and access and upload from anywhere in the world. I am looking for a 8-12 Bay Synology NAS rack station and came across the RS2423RP+. I want to begin with a RAID setup that will begin with 4 of the WD Red Pro 18TB drives and then add additional drives to the Raid 6 config later. Can that be done without losing data on the initial raid setup? I am wanting Raid 6 to account for two failed drives if that ever happens again…trying to be safe this time. Also, does Synology software have a feature for full daily backup to cloud service? If not, can you please recommend a cloud service? Please let me know your thoughts about my planning above. Your expertise will be much appreciated. And, thank you for all of the great videos on YouTube. They are extremely helpful and your knowledge is surpassed by none.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Shahzad Qadri

  WD RED Plus 6TB models
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-16-2023, 09:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am after some quiet HDDs for an media server/backup QNAP NAS in my lounge. I bought some 8TB Ironwolfs and they are too noisy. Scan.co.uk are listing two WD Red Plus 6TB models, with the 5400rpm one labelled as NEW. Any thoughts on the differences with these two?

Thanks!

  TerraMaster T9-450

I've been searching for a review for the T9-450 for months and still cannot find one. I keep checking back here hoping you'll put one up as I do appreciate your thoroughness. Is this thing worth it? Can that board support 9xSATA and 2xNVMe AND 2xSFP+ all at the same time? In all that I've seen about TOS I would likely wipe it and put TrueNAS on. Would be a bonus to have information on that as well.

Thanks for all the great content and education!

  Synology DS 423+
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-16-2023, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I would like to replace my old Synology DS 216j with the new DS 423+. I am planning to use 3 or 4 12TB WD Red Plus drives in the DS 423+. Of the "unofficial" 3rd party memory modules you have tested what is your best recommendation to expand the useable RAM of the DS 423+? Am I on the right track? Thanks in advance for your help.

Need advice on NAS build to replace WD My Cloud NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-16-2023, 01:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I recently bought this motherboard CPU combo.
ASRock J5040-itx - Intel Quad-Core Pentium Processor J5040 (up to 3.2 GHz)

8 or 16 GB of Ram

I also have two - WD Red 2TB NAS Internal Hard Drive - 5400 RPM Class, SATA 6Gb/s, SMR, 256MB Cache, 3.5" - WD20EFAX. ---these drives were bought 9/2019 and used in the My Cloud EX2 Ultra.

This is to be used as a home NAS, mostly just to store files. I plan on using TrueNAS

Questions:
1) is that MB/CPU enough? Ram?
2) are these drives worth reusing?
3) if I can use them, I'm thinking about buying 4TD drives. Can I use them with the 2TB drives I already have? Or is it better to but only use 4TB drives.
4) I have an older 60GB 2.5 SSD. I'm thinking about using as a boot/OS drive. Is this OK? I have other SSD drives of larger sizes. Just trying to make use of this drive.
5) I may add two more Sata connectors through a pcie x1 card. Is this OK to use or is this not advised with TrueNAS?

  Upgrade old or new NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-15-2023, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Greetings,
in mid 2015 my Hifi Dealer installed the following NAS
QNAP TS-451 Desktop NAS-System 20TB (4-Bay, 4x 5TB WD Red)
where I keep my HI RES Music files worth plenty of money. That's why it's on RAID 6.Now I'm running out of capacity and my question for you today is : Should I replace the hard drives with bigger ones, or should I go for a complete new NAS because of better CPU performance etc.
Would it also make sense to just get a new one and run both NAS ?
Thanks upfront for your reply, I highly appreciate it.
Best regards
Robert Gmerek

  First NAS for Plex Recommendation
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-15-2023, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi. I am looking to buy my first NAS. I don't know much about this stuff, nor do I know how to make modifications to one that I buy (like adding extra memory and stuff). The main purpose of the NAS will be to use it as a Plex server. I bought three 14TB WD Red Plus drives already (to use in a RAID 5 setup), and now need to find the best NAS for me. Most of my files are of Anime in .MKV files that have multiple Audio formats and Subtitles, and a lot of them are 1080p (some 4k) and HEVC coded. Based on your videos, I think the QNAP TS-464 would be a good one, but you also mention that Synology has the better software that is easier for beginners, so would the 423+ be better than the TS-464? Note I care most about being able to stream all of my files (from anywhere in my house or somewhere else). What NAS would you recommend for what I want and that will play all the files I have (doesn't have to be the 464 or 423+)? Thank you.

Started setting up my NAS following your QNAP NAS Setup Guild 2022... but I've noticed my HDDs in the NAS never idle... is that normal?

  Qnap TS-462 upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-15-2023, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good morning ... EXCELLENT Youtube videos!!! A couple of questions (if I may). I currently have a Qnap TS-269L with 2 3TB drives that I use for photo backup (amatuer photographer) and as a "server" for documents, little music, and littler video. Without doing enough research, I purchased 2 8TB Seagate Ironwolf dives to replace the 3TB's. They're not on the Qnap approved list and my 269 is quite old. I've convinced myself to purchase the TS-462. From Qnap tech I should be able to take the 2 existing 3TB drives from the 269 and install them in the 462, then replace the drives 1 by 1 to the 8TB. However, on Qnap's website, there is a caveat that says if the raid was created before a certain firmware, it won't work. Any advice? Does this sound like a logical upgrade? Hoping to take advantage of my "free" 2.5gbe connection on my ISP modem and motherboard

Thanks in Advance
Cheers

PS VERY happy with my current setup, hasn't given me a moments issue!
