  NAS Solution Start up
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-06-2022, 06:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I run a small design company that utitlize a lot data spaces. I am looking to transfer the current data of about 10-20TB to a NAS solution. We operate using Mac OS.
I am also skewed more towards Asustor because of the competitive pricing.

The NAS storage will be the centralize storage to download and upload files for a team of 3 person. The team will be working remotely from each of our own place.

We would transfer the files to the NAS once or twice a week.

I would like to ask which setup will suit us. We don't have a big budget to start with. So i'm not too sure to go 2 Drive or 4 Drive NAS.

Also we need to have a back up solution to this. I'm also looking at another NAS storage for back up. I've been told a NAS back up solution is much cheaper compare to cloud back up in the long term. What kind of NAS storage system is sufficient for this? Perhaps an entry level system?

Would appreciate you expert advise. Many Thanks.

I am currently using a Seagate Model SRPD20 Two-bay NAS.
Seagate is no longer supporting this NAS. I am only interested in a NAS that will act as an extended Hard Drive. I currently have two Seagate 3TB Iron Wolf NAS Hard Drives and am using RAID 1. Thank you for your videos. Yours, John

(First) NAS for Photos (also from mobile), music and dev work
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-05-2022, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am agonizing over selecting a "perfect" NAS for my home, here's a list of my requirements:

1. Most importantly I want for Photos:
1a. to easily and AUTOMATICALLY sync photos taken on my phone to my NAS (replace google photos)
1b. store my RAW files from Pentax (but not in proprietary format - I use standard RAWs) and display them.
1c. create and share playlists/ collections online with family members.

2. I have a music collection and an amp with decent speakers, I am planning to buy a streamer just to connect it to NAS and listen with no PC/NAS fan noise. NAS will be in another room.
2a. I want to create separate playlists or folders with access for my kids (they do not need to listen to heavier music just yet) and
2b. I want to listen to FLAC files WITHOUT converting them by the NAS on mobile (if I can choose to convert or not then great).
2c. I have good tags on my music collection and good folder structure but I hope that apps can also show/download lyrics (timestamped!) and display them.
2d. I want to download (albums/whole playlists) via mobile app so when I leave home I can have most important tracks (or audiobooks) at hand or for kids.

3. I also want to run dev environments:
3a. VMs but I think mostly docker apps will do either from community or my own.
3b. NodeJs and MongoDB as well as PostgreSQL instances.
3c. Git Server

4. Replace Evernote with other NAS hosted app (Joplin? or other?)

5. Having a chat/communicator I can use for my familly would be a nice to have.
6. Same with some Office/Online collaboration tool - nice to have.

7. It would be great if it would play videos with subs without conversion (transcoding) It's fine if I need some kind of nvidia shield or firestick to do that (synology vs qnap vs asustor)

8. replace Dropbox/Google Drive to sync files between PC and NAS so I can replace a PC with no issues at any moment and keep current private work safe, collaborate and share with family and friends (with selective sync! I don't want few GBs on my hard drive just because I am synchronizing a folder with possibly bigger assets).

I was considering Qnap 673A, Synology 1621+ or Asustor Lockstor 6 Gen 2 for the puproses mentioned above.

I am unsure about reliability of the apps as there are a lot of conflicting opinions for all three brands. I would like to know if I'll need to move to hosting community / external packages in containers (lots of docker -> need more RAM), or should I utilize Plex for most of what I need with multimedia (I don't mind one time Plex Pass payment, as long as it's one time) or can I use Synology for all these things although they give the worst hardware, but supposedly best apps.

Synology supposedly has best apps and worst hardware (Asustor is slightly better).
Asustor has Celeron with hardware transcoding features and decent apps it seems (Synology is, again as I read, is better with their softare), and QNAP should have best hardware (I should be able to get nvidia 1650 into that model, then again QNAPS own compatibility sheet states that this model does not support GPU and site says it does.)

I don't mind the settings and configuration (initial) but I want this to support my family members as well.

I am open to different solutions as was considering Unraid even but it might be too much unless there is a pack of software that really allows for all these features.

I know it's a lot and I thank you for taking time to read through it and

  Jellyfish 4K videos
Posted by: Val_panam - 08-05-2022, 02:30 PM - Forum: Home Multimedia - No Replies

Dear Rob, all,

I upgraded from DS713+ to TS-673A and a Nvidia GTX 1050 TI (waouw !)
4K transcoding in Plex is working like a charm, but I wonder if I could push for testing these famous 4K@400Mbps HEVC Jellyfish videos, used by Rob for all his tests.
Do you know if I could download them somewhere ?

Kind Regards

4K video transcoding tests on TS-673A and installed a GTX 1050TI
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-05-2022, 02:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

Dear Rob,

I finally bought a TS-673A and installed a GTX 1050TI in it, Plex HW transcoding is working like a charm with standard 4K files (tested up to 2 transcoding in //).
I would like to test your impressive Jellyfish videos up to 4K@400Mbps HEVC, is it possible to find them somewhere ?

Regards,

Valentin

Posted by: Enquiries - 08-05-2022, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello Guys,

I look for a NAS with super fast transfer speed via LAN and over the Internet.

Which NAS would you recommend?

I also do photography and video. Can I see what their interface will look like somewhere if, for example, I've uploaded photos or a video and want to share them somehow with a client? How will the customer see the photos and video? Can this be simulated somewhere to see if I will like what the software/interface looks like when sending photos to a client?

Thanks,
Plamen

Synology DS620slim compatible 2.5 inch drives
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-05-2022, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

After seeing your review of the DS 620 slim I’ve decided that this is the appropriate Nas for me given that I am an apartment dweller and do not have a separate room to put a noisy Nas in. I cannot afford to do an all SSD Nas at this time so I must use quiet drives. The slim seems to be a good fit for the Nas but I’m not sure what drives to put in it to keep it relatively quiet. I’m looking at the Seagate barracuda 5 TB right now. Will this be a quiet system with those drives? Are those drives acceptable for a blow to moderate use Nas? Are there better drivers to be using in the slim with the 2.5 inch form factor? Having difficulty finding 2.5 inch Nas drives anywhere on the Internet including Amazon. Thank you very much for any assistance you can give me.

Kodi other than 18 on qnap nas ts251+
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-05-2022, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

Hi

I had a issue with my nas server and had to reinstall the operating system . I have downloaded kodo 18 from the install guidee and installed no issues.

When i follow the guide to try and install kodi 19 the qnap club wont gather any programs and i cant get to the repo site via a web browser. I am guessing the link is now dead. Would you know where i can get my hands on the kodi 19 any version qpkg.

Thanks

Robert
