Both the Synology DS220j and DS218play are good options for a personal NAS setup. The DS220j is a budget-friendly option that offers basic file sharing and backup features, while the DS218play is slightly more expensive but offers more advanced multimedia streaming capabilities and hardware-accelerated transcoding.

If you're looking to build or buy a more advanced NAS system, Synology and Unraid are popular choices. Synology has a wide range of NAS models with varying levels of features and performance, and their DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system is user-friendly and has a wide range of apps available.

Unraid is a popular choice for DIY enthusiasts as it allows for a flexible and customizable setup, and supports a wide range of hardware. It also has features such as Docker and virtualization support, which can be useful for running various applications on your NAS.

As for hardware, the Dell XPS 870 tower could be a good starting point for building a DIY NAS system. You'll need to make sure the hardware is compatible with your chosen NAS operating system, and you may need to add additional components such as a network card or additional storage drives depending on your requirements.
