  NAS storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-20-2023, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm Mac based and live in an old house with a Deco mesh wifi system enabling us to have wifi at opposing ends of the house (despite thick walls). I would like to have central work storage so that I can work on a laptop in one room and if I want to, be able to work at the other end of the house and access the same files at a good speed. I am a graphic designer so it might be quite large files. Is this possible? Thanks for your help Philippa

  HDMI support
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-19-2023, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I've got a DS920+ that I am considering as a primary for Surveillance. However, as you know, it is HDMI deficient! Short of getting a DVA1622, is there a HDMI solution for the DS920 that works as well as the direct option of the 1622? Thanks

  NS324

I have an old Cisco NSS 324 (don't laugh) and it was never really used. EOL was around 2012 I think? I am just dusting it off and really really need to update the firmware. Mine is 1.0 and Cisco went to 1.5 if memory serves. If I am reading correctly some Qnap upgrades work. Do you know where I could D/L the firmware? Any help is much appreciated.

  QNAP Backup Functionality
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-19-2023, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good day guys, hope your doing well. I have 3 quick questions:

1. Does the “Backup & Restore” in QNAP HBS3 do backups in a way where it captures the OS, installed apps, app settings/configs so lets say God forbid there is a system crash or ransomware you can actually restore the entire system from backup without having to reinstall apps & reconfigure them?
2. If HBS3 doesn’t accomplish my above mentioned question. Does Snapshots accomplish it?
3. If neither Snapshots or HBS does this what can be used on a QNAP to get this done?

  NVR QNAP or Synology
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-19-2023, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm setting up my home surveillance system. Right now planning 5 4k cameras ran via POE. I have been looking at the Synology DVA3221 and QNAP QVP41B. I have been unable to find a source of comparison between the 2. I have found videos on each but none that cover the same aspects. What would you recommend and why? What surveillance drives would you recommend, I have no experience with this type of drive.

I am somewhat familiar with Synology as I am currently using a DS920+ with WD Red Pro drives, but want my surveillance to be separate and want the AI features.

Thanks for your help!

Ryan

  Do I need a gpu?
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-19-2023, 04:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I’m buying my first NAS, mostly for file management and redundancy for family home movies and photos. None of the videos are 4k, and I have no plans to rip and store DVDs on the NAS. I’m thinking of getting a synology DS923+ but I read reviews and comments about the lack of a gpu making hardware transcoding impossible. Is this something that will impact watching the home movies/videos from the NAS?

  Off-site Synology Enclosure
Posted by: steples - 04-19-2023, 03:06 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I use a DS918+ with 4x4TB WD Red Plus drives at home. I just ordered 4x10TB WD Red Plus drives to expand capacity. Now I am wondering if this is an opportunity to use the old drives at an off-site location for backup. I currently use C2 Hyper Backup, but I would also like another NAS to store at a friend's house. Should I upgrade my enclosure at home and use the 918+ for remote backup, or should I keep the 918+ at home and purchase a cheaper Synology 4-bay enclosure as the backup? The 918+ has worked flawlessly since new. Thank you for any recommendations and replies!

Synology 1522 backup to Drobo 5n2
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-18-2023, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I now have a Synology DS1522+ which replaced a dead Drobo 5n2. I have the backup Drobo 5n2 which still works. Can I use it as a backup for the new Synology NAS? Both have 5 10TB drives in them. Any help would be appreciated. While I have the drives to put in a new 1522 not sure if I need to have 2 Synology DS1522+ one to backup the other.

Low speed on 10Gbit network with Synology
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-18-2023, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

My new setup:
Synology 1621+
Intel X550 10Gbit card
4 x WD RED Pro each 16 TB in SHR
1 SNV3410 800 SSD for cache

When i tranfer a large file from my WD SSD 960 pro 2TB in my PC to the NAS i expect a tranferrate from about 600 MB/s (in one of your videos you sugested about 200MB per actual drive)
I do not get a steady line and it fluctuase between 180 and 280 MB/s
What settings could be wrong on my NAS?

  NAS for Photography
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-18-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there,
I am looking for NAS to sort, store, share and overall manage my photos (hobby photograph). Hence, Synology is my choice (Photostation).
Besides, I want to use it as generic data storage and maybe as a VM for Smart Home environment (maybe I will use my Pi which currently runs OMV for that - but who knows).
Plex etc. will not be used.

Priority should be a smooth working for a huge number of photos.
Currently I have a 4 TB Ironwolf, would add a 8TB and later exchange the 4TB to a 2nd 8TB for RAID1 usage (is 2Bay fine? makes 4Bay more sense?)

Thoughts:
2Bay:
Basic: DS220+ (~320€)
Advanced: DS720+ (~440€)
2023: DS723+ (~490€)
4Bay:
Basic: DS420+ (~520€)
2023: DS423+ (~520€)
Advanced 2023: DS923+ (~595€)

The more the better - sure - but
1. Does the extra money pay out?
2. do I need 4 Bay? Probably 2x8TB would run for years.

I would definitely upgrade the RAM to at least 10GB (+~30€/ ECC: ~60€).

Would be happy for help. Many thanks!
