Trying to workout best way to go

#1
Trying to keep this short due to char limit

Was maybe looking at getting the "Synology DiskStation DS1821+ 8-Bay" it says "Maximum Single Volume Size is 108TB" Is the 108TB the usable space after formatting does that include the space you lose from having an array, if you had 8 16TB drives can you have all that usable storage on one volume how about 18TB, at what stage would you be forced to have 2 volumes?

Thanks

The "Maximum Single Volume Size is 108TB" specification for the Synology DiskStation DS1821+ refers to the maximum size of a single storage volume that can be created on the NAS. This limit is due to the file system format used by the NAS, which is typically ext4 or Btrfs.

The usable space on the volume will depend on the RAID configuration and the number and size of the hard drives you have installed. In a RAID array, some capacity is used for redundancy to protect against drive failure. The amount of usable space will also be affected by any overhead related to the file system and other system files.

For example, if you have 8x 16TB drives in RAID 6 configuration (which offers two-drive redundancy), you would have a total of 96TB of usable space, which would fit within the maximum single volume size limit of 108TB. However, if you use RAID 5 with the same number of drives, the usable space would be reduced to 112TB due to the loss of one drive for redundancy.

If you want to use larger hard drives, such as 18TB drives, you would likely need to use multiple volumes or split the drives across multiple RAID arrays. The specific configuration will depend on your needs and the capabilities of your NAS. It's always a good idea to consult the documentation and support resources for your NAS to ensure you are using the most appropriate configuration for your needs.
I hope these help
