Best NAS for 4K Plex Server
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-03-2023, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm really torn. Was set on DS923+...then thoughts turned to QNAP-464...and now to Lockerstor 4 Gen2 (AS6704T).

I have two other Synology NAS units so I'm quite familiar...but always interested in choosing the right tool for the job.

This NAS will be specific and solely for video storage/playback (4K) as a Plex Media Server (lots of experience).

I like the idea of keeping it all in the family (Synology) but I want the best possible performance for the price...and security is a must...yes, I've been hit by ransomware so I know all about the importance of security.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

J.

Streaming DS Video Station Outside LAN/home network
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-03-2023, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a Synology DS1522+ with Video Station installed. I can stream my videos over my LAN without issue, but when I'm away from home, none of my videos will play.

A pop-up appears that says "Error. The video cannot be played."

I assume there is a setting somewhere I need to change, I just can't figure out what that would be.

Slow speed on 10 Gbit network
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-03-2023, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi
in invested in a TP-link SX1005 10Gbit switch. This is connected to my router and a 10Gbit Intel X540 card in my pc and with a 10 Gbit Intel X550 in my Synology NAS. In my pc one 16 TB WD Red pro and in my DS1621+ 4x 16TB in SHR.
Both windows en Synology say it is 10Gbit. Also the Jumbo frames set on 9000.
Well my data transfer rate will not go faster than 125 MB/s where i minimum expacted 260 MB/s (spec of WD red pro).
What can i do?

  Which Nas I should choose
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-03-2023, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
First of all thank you very much for your work it’s very helpful. I am a PC builder enthusiast and I want to build my first Nas to store all my documents, and use it as a plex server as well. I really don’t know how to choose between buying a Nas or building one. I’m very concerned about the power consumption if I building one because it will be running 24/7. I really use it only for plex and I know that in my price range transcode will be difficult. All my media are on 1080P H264 but maybe I will need transcode in the future I don’t know. What do you recommend for a Nas Plex with low power consumption (DYI or not) ? I can build one with PC part but I’m afraid that it’s going to be very consuming in term of electricity. I can raise a little bit my budget if it’s really needed. Thank you very much for your help best, Antoine

  Question about converting video's
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-03-2023, 08:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I have a question.
So I'm getting NAS for home use, it's going to be used for cloud storage, (photos, videos, documents), and for streaming movies.
I need to decide between ds720+ and ds723+.
Problem starts at me not having experience with it so I don't know is 6Gb of RAM enough for my maximum capacity of 10Tb in RAID. (I mean 10Tb each drive)

Ds723+ can upgrade to 32Gb of RAM but it doesn't have GPU.

Next thing that bothering me is, if I have sorted 4k video and want to watch it on 4k tv/laptop dose it need to convert that video? (I think it doesn't unless tv/laptop don't support 4k)

Also if I have FHD video and want to stream it on FHD pc, it should run normally without converting, right?
So if I think correct ds720+ with GPU is better for converting video's if needed, but is 6Gb of RAM really enough?

  NAS DS720+ DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 4
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-03-2023, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

Would like to know the models that are confirmed for Non Official Memory to upgrade my Synology NAS
I already upgrade it with 8GB but would like to install 16GB.
So, the issue is that I try with a CRUCIAL CT16G4SFD8266 and didn't work and can't find the correct one that is CRUCIAL CT16G4SFRA266.
Would like your advise on the rigth model that it seems could be the ADATA AD4S3200716G22 (not sure if the model I found AD4S320016G22-SGN will works)
Also if there is any KINGSTON that I may use will be highly appreciate it.

Thanks for youe help.

Best regards.

  First NAS, edit on VM?
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-02-2023, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey guys, thanks so much for offering this advice portal! I'm sure I'm going to come off like a total knob. I am a total noob. I have no infrastructure other than a pretty high power desktop I use for work as a designer and photographer, and a bunch of random external drives. All the recent sales on data storage got me looking into setting up a NAS and raid. But of course as I went down the rabbit hole I learned about other things I could do like stream media with Plex and set up a virtual machine. So, I'm just looking for a recommendation on where to go from here. At a minimum I think I'll get something like a Synology 423+ to use for storage, backup and NAS. But, I'm interested in building something that would allow me to edit 4K video, raw photos, 3D design and other windows-based design applications from my iPad remotely. Not having a laptop means I have to be home to do my work. I don't really want to invest in a laptop that isn't powerful enough to do my work, so VM?

  What NAS should I buy?
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-02-2023, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys!

I am trying to decide what NAS to buy for archiving footage/projects and do some video editing (but mainly archiving). I was thinking about getting the Synology DS1821+ and upgrading to 10GBE + SSDs NVMe and populate with 8x 10TB HDDs or larger over time (maybe start with 4x10TBs and go up). Would this allow me to edit 4K off the NAS via 10GBe directly to my computer? Do you think this is a good option?

Thanks so much!

Why do you always use Plex pass in your vidos
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-02-2023, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Really would like to know why when you test video's on the NAS you always mention having Plex pass.

Why not try without Plex pass as likely more people without Plex pass would be using NAS for home use so those people still do not know if the NAS you are showing is suitable for their needs.

If you run your video test without Plex pass then people would have a better understanding if the NAS you are showing is right for them

replacing WD My Cloud ex2 Ultra
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-02-2023, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I own a WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra with 2 x 2TB WD RED Drives in Raid 1. I use it to store Family photos, videos, music, and basic files. I use Windows and Linux computers. The other day I noticed it was not accessible by any of my computers. I fun it seemed fairly warm. I thought it was dead. After multiple unpluggings and thinking it was a lost cause. It started working again. I think it go over heated. Thinking about replacing it with something else. Question 1) Do you think this could have been a fluke and the NAS is alright. Question 2) should I reuse the drives in a new NAS? Question 3) What NAS would you recommend that is Windows an Linux Friendly, better than what I have, that also allows remote access with my phone? My Cloud has a phone app that lets me access my files away from home.
