What NAS to choose |

Hi I'd need a device that my family would use mainly to sync smartphone photos and videos and personal files. So the software that would sync the photos automatically is very important. Also I would be interested to make a plex host out of that machine. And a small note, I wonder if it's very noisy, because my router is in one of my bedrooms, so there is no possibility at the moment to put my NAS somewhere else. Would it disturb my sleep, do the ventilators turn on randomly or only if you download upload something?
So it should have a good app for photos sync, should be able to host Plex, and would be good if it were silent enough to put it in the bedroom.
Thank you very much in advance I appreciate your help.

I'm very confused about which route to go down.
It started when I started getting rid of all my old DVDs. I'm ripping them to my main HDD (4 Tb). I'm currently just using MakeMKV to rip. After the DVDs are done ill start on my Blu Rays. I also have a moderate amount of old media files currently on my PC 2Tb or so (formats all over the place- Unsure about transcoding). Not sure of the final size of all these files 4-6Tb?
I would like to have access to my media via a NAS for the main TVs in the house (2 perhaps 3). I would also like to be able to keep important files on the NAS (Photos.CVs etc)
I cannot figure out which option is best for me
I have watched hours and hours of your videos and others and keep going around in circles.
Unsure if something like the QNAP TS-464 will be enough for what I need
Or if I should build my own NAS (Especially as the hardware seems far more powerful for similar money)

Any help is appreciated

Hello,
I've recently started to learn about NAS storage. One of my drives died with all my kids photos etc. Total nightmare. We also stream a lot of movies as a family and my wife and I work from home. I've watched a lot of your videos over the past few days, but I can't make up my mind as to what is the best NAS for us. I don't mind paying a bit more for extra RAM or to get a future proofed system that I won't regret buying in 2 years time, but I can't justify paying too much. At the moment, I'm thinking the Synology DiskStation DS923+ I really don't know if I'm paying too much. It'd be great to get your expert feedback to help me. Cheers, Rich

External USB drive for off site backup of NAS |

Hi, I am looking to purchase a backup disk for my recently purchased DS920+ NAS - specifically for off-site backup.
I am finding it hard to identify whether any USB storage will work with the Synology DS920+, or whether I need something special. External drives indicate whether they work with Windows and MAC, but not Synology.
Can you tell me, are all the following devices suitable to use with the Synology DS920+ for external backup?
1. WD 4TB My Passport Ultra Portable HDD
2. WD 5TB My Passport Ultra Portable HDD **
3. WD My Passport Ultra for Mac
4. WD My Passport Portable Hard Drive
5. WD My Passport for Mac Portable Hard Drive
6. Seagate Basics 4 TB Desktop External Hard Drive - USB3.0
7. Seagate Portable Drive, 4TB, External Hard Drive
8. SEAGATE One Touch Portable Hard Drive - 5 TB
9. Toshiba Canvio Partner 4TB Portable 2.5" External HDD, USB 3.2 Gen 1
Is there something else that I should be considering?

DAS RAID |

I'm looking for a DAS RAID System primarily for fast 4k video editing and storage of large files.
I'm always buying external hard drives but they inevitably fail over time, so I wanted to have a RAID system for more reliable storage. I'm looking for something with 5 or more bays so I can put 8TB drives in them. I'm not a tech guru, so all the different options are causing more confusion than clarity. I don't need a NAS because only 1 computer accesses the files. I don't know what would be faster for video editing concerning connection (thunderbolt, or USB 3) or which type of drives to get (inron wolf or Western Digital). It would be nice to have SSD compatability just in case I want to upgrade later. I'm mostly finding boxes which don't include RAID, or NAS systems which I don't need. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Synology DS423 Drives to use for Plex and Photos |

Hello, I have been enjoying your education on NAS devices. Based on your reviews as a relative IT Novice, I am leaning towards the Synology DS423 for its media support for the Plex Service and the Photos application you provides as compared to QNAP. I am wondering whether I will notice a difference in performance if I use a 5400 RPM drive versus a 7200 RPM. While I will use this for all the normal NAS RAID file storage needs, I want to have a NAS that will support PLEX and 1080 and 4K video as well as decades of photos and videos recorded at 4k and now 8K. Since the drives are a fair amount more expensive, I am wondering if I would notice a difference between the two.
Thank you,
Sean

Automated Plex home media server |

Hi, I need advice on choosing the right set of equipment to build a home media server. I want to make an automated Plex home media server. I want the NAS to be connected to a monitor as well as my TV (for direct local viewing). For storage I'm thinking of the ironwolf pro 20TB HDD, as I can't afford to buy 2 of them (which is my future plan to have 40TBs), I don't want to buy a 16TB HDD and then regret not getting a 20TB one when trying to expand. For the NAS I'm looking at the Qnap HS-264 as it's the best suited for me. The 8GB, the 2x HDMI 2.0 out, the 2.9 Ghz CPU, and the 2 bay sound good to me. I'm just worried about a few things. Will the HDstation software provide full direct playback quality of 4K 60fps movies to my TV? Will the hard drive handle the 4K movies? Does HDstation have Plex on it or do I need to watch movies using a gallery type of app, if so, is that app good in terms of subtitles and ease of use? Thank you for taking your time to read this!

Cache setup for TVS-874 w/ 2 NVME, primarily used for Plex |

Hello,
I recently bought a QNAP TVS-874 in the I7 variant. I would have bought the I9 but it was not available for 3 more months. So the question is, when I'm setting up the array, should I set it up with the 2 NVME in R/W caching, or should I do the Read Only caching and set up Plex on its own separate NVME for the Plex application? I ask because I want to ensure that there are no delays on clients when loading media content as I have thousands of shows and movie rips I've done from my Bluray and UHD collection.
Thanks,
James

Single Deduplicated File set |

Hi Guys - I am a big fan of the channel so first off, thanks.
I need to focus on one thing. Absolute reliable single-copy backup but NOT propagating thousands of duplicate files and folders. Only the files I want to keep and having certainty that I can continually reference those file on stable URLs.
The question is about EASE and CONSISTENCY of good quality de-duplication. Which software (if Synology DS1522+) or I would switch to another make if it did better de-dupe. I hope to use a MacOSX on an M2 MacMini Pro with a 10G Ethernet link to the NAS. Many thanks. Ed
