  LAN/NAS configuration
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-17-2023, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good afternoon,

What do I have:
MAC Studio (OS 12.6.5)
Synology 920+ (in Synology RAID),
Synology DS220J (Mirror RAID)
Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station

What do I do:
I am a photographer, I work 99% of the time on images, seldom on videos.

What do I need:
the fastest possible connection between the computer and the NAS (mainly the 920)

Any suggestion about best hardware and/or software configuration to achieve « decent » transfer speeds?

Thanks,

  TS-264 for small business file server(replacign ts-219p+)
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-17-2023, 02:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Would the TS-264 be a good replacement for our current ts-219p+ ? Can I buy the TS-264 and install 2 SATA SSDs in RAID 1 for total storage? Can you recommend best disk\storage to use? (2 HDDs only or 2 HDDs & SSD cache or just 2 SATA SSDs)

Appreciate the recommendations.

Thanks

Asustor Flashstor 6 vs Synology ds920
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-17-2023, 10:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi

Recently seen your video for the Asustor Flashstor 6 and looks interesting (apart from price of SSD drives).

Was wondering what you would choose yourself as a home user for showing movies, backups, website and poss other things between the Asustor Flashstor 6 or Synology DS920 (when refurbished are released as still waiting for those)

In both instances 4 x 4TB drives

For the Asustor Flashstor 6 am assuming that the Crucial P3 Plus 4TB M.2 PCIe Gen4 NVMe Internal SSD would work ?

Also, taking into account the software that comes with the NAS which is the better for a home user (asking as not seen anything mentioned about software that comes with the Asustor Flashstor 6)

Regards

Steve

  DS223+
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-17-2023, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

Do you have any updated information on DS223+?
So much time without news.

I need to upgrade soon (during this year) and I don't want to upgrade from my DS220j to a DS220+ to find out that 223+ is way better..

Do you hove more detailed information on the specs and/or when it will come out? If it will come out at all?

Isn't suposed Synology to renew its models using this year prefix?

Thank you very much, I love your work, specially on youtube Smile

  WD60EFPX vs WD60EFZX
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-17-2023, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, thanks for your efforts on the NAS world ! I'm writing to you just for an hint as i cant find anything about the model WD60EFPX and what do you think about this disk for a simple home NAS. I've found it at a very reasonable price while the WD60EFZX is a bit more expensive and i was wondering the differences between these 2 models. Many thanks ! Have a nice day

  Which NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-17-2023, 09:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey guys,
Been watching some of your videos on YouTube recently and they've been great, having not known much about NAS boxes until now.

During the renovation of my home, I have installed Cat6 cabling throughout, with the plan to have network to every room.
My plan was to have a small home network, where my wife and I have something storing all our movies, music and files, where we can access from whatever room in the house.
Currently, I have around 600 or so DVDs i'd like to have on this network storage and be able to access on something like Plex.

Can you advise what would be the best option you would recommend?

Currently dont have a specific budget in mind, as it costs what it'll cost.....as long as it's not something way over expensive! lol

Hope you can lend your expertise to this little query of mine.

Many thanks,

Mat

Recommended NAS to store video camera files
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-17-2023, 07:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello. I'm looking for a solution for remote storage our our NVR videos from our business and am just learning about NAS as a possible solution. What is your recommendation for a NAS with the simplest and easiest setup to remotely backup our video files from an NVR? Thank you.

DS920+ Timetec 16GB did not work, Crucial does work
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-16-2023, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Quick note/input after trying a couple of recommended options for a DS920+ running the latest version of DSM as of 5/16/2023.

NO it did not work in DS920+
Timetec 16GB DDR4 2666MHz (DDR4-2666) PC4-21300 (PC4-2666V) Non-ECC Unbuffered 1.2V CL19 2Rx8 Dual Rank 260 Pin SODIMM Laptop Notebook PC Computer Memory RAM Module Upgrade (16GB)

YES it works in DS920+
Crucial RAM 16GB DDR4 3200MHz CL22 (or 2933MHz or 2666MHz) Laptop Memory CT16G4SFD832A

Thank you for your posting and write-u. It was very helpful expanding my memory needs.

I would also recommend to those people who use Plex (native or containerized) and high traffic docker containers on their standard HDDs to consider using a couple of M.2 NVMe SSDs or SATA SSDs now that DSM supports pining all Btrfs metadata to an SSD cache. This resulted in a massive increase in response times loading content over just having a large RAM cache to use with the HDDs.

NAS be damned, why is this so difficult?
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-16-2023, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey! TLBig GrinR be it LTT forum or reddit, i can't seem to find the advice i need. Please help if you can.

What i want:
- Store my movies, shows, games, pics, etc
- Stream my movies, 1080p most of the time, 4K would be good too but not a world ending if i have to move them to my device if the NAS can't handle it.
- Would mostly use it local only, but having an option to use it safely on my phone/laptop somewhere else would be very nice too.
- Would like to be capable of maybe hosting a password manager on it, or other usefull gadgets.
- I'd like to cache it with an M.2 and while i have 2.5Gbit capability, i don't think i'll see more than 1Gbit as a must have.
- By the sounds of it, Synology has the software i need, but QNAP has the hardware.

I have the QNAP TS-464-4G for 659USD and the Synology DS423+ for 518USD available. I don't mind buying extra ram and m.2 caching for them.

Which one would be the best for me? Do i need more than 8GB ram? Could the QNAP house a Quadro for 4k?

Synology nas vs diy storage / virtualisation server
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-16-2023, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am interested in investing in a nas storage device with the purpose of storing and streaming media on local computers and occassionaly hosting and storing lightwieght virtual machines such as linux.

I was considering getting a Synology DS423+ or a DS923+ or else buying an old dell poweredge server for the same use case. Which would be ideal to get? I do have IT Knowledge and I am fairly confident in working with IT equipment.
