New synology from QNAP and DS923+ doubt
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-19-2023, 09:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear Guys,
I read your blog every time that I can, above all now that I need to substitute my QNAP TE-453 Pro.
I want to migrate to Synology brand because of hackings to QNAP and to try the DSM experience.
My principal use is storage, multimedia (plex, no transcode) and a VM for occasional use.
I was focused on DS923+, I read your tests but I can’t decide.
In Synology blogs I read of users that found problem using photo station with the CPU always at 90% of usage for the GPU lack while organizing images and videos (thumbnails, …).
That’s a problem for me because I want to syncro all smartphones images in the NAS to have a centralized photo album ed use the application AI to find/organize them.
Did you had that kind of experience during your tests?
If DS923+ is not the right one, on which model do you think I should go for?
Thank you very much for the help.

  Selection of hard drives
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-19-2023, 07:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello! I need help. I'd like to buy NAS DiskStation DS423+ and I want to use hard drives with 18 Tb capacity or above. It is better to use 20 Tb hard drives. And I don't find such drives on the compatibility page (see https://www.synology.com/en-global/compatibility?search_by=products&model=DS423%2B&category=hdds_no_ssd_trim&p=1&change_log_p=1). You have more experience than me and may be You have usefull information about types of hard drives that will work with this NAS DiskStation DS423+. Capacity 18 Tb or above.
Please share this information or your experience.

Thank you for your response.

Need help with SLOW 100G Speeds
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-19-2023, 02:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I just sent a msg on youtube. I've got a QNAP TS-h1290FX NAS. It's the all SSD NVME flash NAS that is 25gb and upgradeable to 100G via a NIC. So I purchased three of the QNAP CXG-100G2SF-CX6 NICs that are PCIe Gen 4 and have them in 16x slots and I cannot break about 50 GB/s on iPerf and reverse direction testing is only 9 GB/s. Blackmagic Disk Speed tests top out at 3600 MB/s write and only 1200 MB/s read. So these speeds are only 10-30% of the speeds I should be seeing. I've been talking with QNAP tech support for 3 weeks and they are no help. I've tried Windows Server even and got the same results. Tried different drivers etc etc etc and Im out of ideas and need some help. Do you do consulting or troubleshooting with things like this?

Posted by: Enquiries - 05-18-2023, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
i came across your youtube channel and i'm currently employed at Heritage Bank here in Belize. we currently use synology ds1815+ to backup our data but lately two of our devies have failed one due to motherboard and the other due to power and board. these nas havebeen with us for quote some time now but with this failure it has had me thinking how we can better our backup solution. we are looking into repairing these but also wanted to upgrade to something more enterprise level and with a higher data storage pool over 150tb. your advise and expertise would greatly be appreciated. let setup a teams meeting if possible. thanks

  Video editing off NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-18-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Two questions: First, when editing off the NAS, is the editing software like Davinci Resolve installed on the NAS or the computer? Second, we need to have two computers connected to a QNAP TVS-h674 and work at the same time. Will the i3 version or the i5 version make a difference in our use case? Is the i5 version worth it? Thanks!

New to NAS, decision as to where to start
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-18-2023, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

NAS

Freelance graphic designer and web developer. Starting to build up a decent amount of client work files. Currently utilising a dropbox folder and periodically backing up to a 2TB G Technology DAS.

Looking to put in place a future-proofed solution to store and backup work files, currently storing around 700GB on Dropbox, just me working from home and an office location from a MacBook Pro.

Started researching, stumbled across Synology and your videos - Great content, definitely wrapping up the market for NAS research. Saw the DS273+ and the DS220+, any recommendations welcome. Not tied to Synology but saw that it had the functionality to link with Dropbox and cloud sync?

New to NAS, not sure if NAS is right way to go. Fairly competent in setting up tech.

TB4 DAS for MB pro - anything new?
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-18-2023, 10:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am an independent doc Cinematographer/editor/post guy desperately needing to expand and simplify my storage for projects. Very frustrated that there still seem no great solutions. Anything new you are aware of since your excellent review agreeing with the above? Am eying OWC Thunder at 8 (or even 4, despite having no rack to mount it in!) so I can use PCI slot for a black magic decklink. Some say use Apple Raid mirroring with this set up? Ideas? Advice? THANK YOU!

  First NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-17-2023, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi - Thank you for your informative videos.

I'm looking for a first NAS to solve the following purposes

1) Music/Movies - Home network/share (Plex?) for digitized music from CDs and DVDs purchased over the years

2) Photos - transfer from Google Photos and old local backups from GPhotos/Apple/point and shoot cams

3) Videos - long GoPro videos of adventure sports

4) Documents - repository for old school/college notes, scanned documents, etc

5) Services - I need a server to run a Homebridge instance, a WebdavNAV server (to backup Omnifocus)

6) Optional services I'm considering but not critical - Monica CRM, NVR for IP-based security cameras

I am somewhat tech savvy (can build a PC, install/setup a linux box and used to be a software eng in a past career) but don't have experience with Docker/VMs

Thank you for your advice!

  overwhelmed a little
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-17-2023, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Love your youtube channel. great info. keep it up!! I just bought the Synology DS418
Not sure if I really need RAID.
Is it possible to use 2 bays as RAID and 2 as just drives?

I'm a podcast coach and have a handful of client's shows that I edit as well. So need 2 backups for my projects. Also do videos as part of 'work'. (total around 3TB) On the personal side of things I have photos , legal stuff, docs and other stuff totaling (around 1TB)

If have the Sinology unit but haven't bought the drives yet. I've got a 1TB SSD that I can use plus many NON-NAS drives but am willing to buy NAS. Wanting to backup a little work and personal backups and replace the 7 drives around my workspace). Defiantly need to be able to access data from the road. Don't need to "after a breach" be up and running for my hundreds of employees. No that serious.
So if I'm not using RAID - would I just use the SHR setting and then hyperbackup?
Hope this is clear. Open to suggestions. THANK YOU!

Synology RS2423+ and WD Red Pro 20TB
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-17-2023, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

To Whom It May Concern:

Do you know if I can use WD Red Pro drives with Synology RS2423+? Only Synology drives are listed on the compatibility list.

Are there any drawbacks? Do you recommend a different brand?

Thanks. Your help is much appreciated.

David
