  Replacement NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-13-2023, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a 9 year old ZyXel NAS with 2 x 2TB drives in RAID 1 which I use for long term storage and as a music server. It is getting full and is no longer supported so I am nervous about just getting larger drives. I want a new setup to be able to store and serve about 1.5 TB of music, 250 GB of office files and backup two new users over internet. I want to run the latest version Logitech Media Server, Home Assistant and Roon ARC. Roon say ”Most QNAP, Synology, and Asustor devices with a 64-bit x86 CPU, like Intel or AMD, and at least 2GB RAM are supported. We strongly recommend 4GB of RAM and an SSD for the Roon databases.” I am considering buying an Asustor Lockerstor 2 Gen 2 AS6702T 2 Bay NAS with 2 x 8 TB Seagate IronWolf drives and 1 M.2 SSD, and possibly upgrading from the 4 GB RAM. Does this sound OK?

  NAS Suggestion
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-13-2023, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

I'm currently using a DS920+ NAS but want to setup a new NAS strictly for surveillance. I am currently looking for support for 5 high res cameras. I'd like night vision, wide viewing angle, I'd like the cameras to have good quality video to at least 30 meters but still be reasonably priced, and exterior grade turret cams. Cameras will be located in 2 different buildings so I am looking at POE using an Eero Pro 6 (old version) to connect the POE switch in my garage to my router. What could recommend?

Thanks for your help and great videos!

  Failing HDD on Synology DS1520+
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-13-2023, 08:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello I am using a DS1520+ with 5x16TB HDD installed in SHR2. Now 1 HDD is defective under warranty and it will take between 3 and 8 weeks before I have the HDD back. Is it ok to continue using the system during this time (saving and removing data). The system is used for active backup for bisness and Plex server. There is very little information about this on youtube for home users. And a 16TB HDD (260 euros) is expensive to have on the shelf and do nothing with it.

Thanks in advance for everything I was able to learn from you to correctly start and set up my nas. your youtube channel is really valuable

  Help
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-12-2023, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Looking at these 2 machines.
qnap ts-231p3-2g vs synology ds220+

1 has an alpine arm processor. 4 cores
ddr3 RAM

1 has an x86 processor with 2 cores but higher clock speed
DDR4 RAM

I'm wanting to use it for video/photo storage from an android device that can also view photo/video without having to download on that same device.
Which is better performance? They are the same price for me

  QNAP TVS-h1288x questions
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-12-2023, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a few questions about the 1288x. Can I use RDIMM instead of UDIMM RAM?

Also, can the USB C port on the back be utilized by VMs? If it can, can I plug in a USB C Dock and hook up 2 monitors?

  wd red plus drives
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-12-2023, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi,

I am finally upgrading my synology ds214play which I currently use with a plex pass for my media as well as business lap top and home photo/video back ups. I have been waiting for the new 4 bay plus series and have decided on the 423+ with the additional RAM mostly due to integrated graphics. (would have preferred this on the 923+ but hey ho)

To date I have used WD red drives and have found them to be reliable, therefore I was going to use 4 x 6tb wd plus drives in a raid 10 configuration.

My question; I can see that there are two types of wd red drives efpx and efzx, can you tell me which one would be better suited to this system please? the efpx has a larger cache but slower rpm, are the efpx newer and therefore better? I am I perhaps worrying about nothing?

Many thanks.
Lewis

  Transcode
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-12-2023, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi

I want to buy a NAS for music and movie but i saw that you're talking about transcoding.
I have lots of 4K movie with HEVC / H265 codec and i want to watch it on an apple tv (on the apple website, they didn't talk about the H265 support). I saw that the INFUSE player can read H265 codec.
So if I use Infuse on my apple TV does it have to transcode ?
Because i want to buy the Synology DS220j that is not really powerful and i think i will not be able to transcode.

If it has to transcode, which Synology NAS will be ok for me ? (I saw the DS218play and the DS220+)

Thanks in advance for your answer and all your work to help people with NAS.

Regards

Quentin Monnier

  Remote Connection
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-12-2023, 09:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am an architect I have a Synology DS220j with two 3.6TB drives though currently using only 200GB. I back up to a SSD drive which I take off site in the evening. My colleague and I currently access the NAS on a LAN. I am planning to move to a laptop to enable working from home. The internet access at one of the locations I will be remote working from won't have the best internet connectivity. Do you have any advice as to how I should access my files remotely (CAD and graphics included)? As I see it my options are Synology QuickConnect, a VPN or using Cloud access through Google Drive or similar. I currently backup to Google Drive using Clous connect. Obviously security is a major consideration.
