Mirroring QNAP T464 to local machine
Posted by: SamWee - 04-14-2023, 04:32 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (2)

After watching all your videos, I decided to purchase the QNAP T464 and am watching the "QNAP NAS Setup guide 2022 #1 video and I got stuck on min 41, mirroring my nas onto my local machine, you video looks like your entering the windows security password, so i entered my login details for  it says I can't access.

I think this is a MS windows security issue, what am I doing wrong here?

I have adminstrator rights

  Simple NAS

Was looking at WD MyHome, but afraid because of WD’s current issues. I just want a small NAS that I can use to share DaVinci Resolve (a dual-platform video editing software) files with a fellow editor in another location. He is on Windows - I am on Mac. Thank you!

Howdy. In this video, Rob discusses how one can add NVMe addon cards to this NAS:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZbO-F4AErg

According to the Synology website, under the specs and accessories section, this device now has "M.2 SSD Storage Pool Support" but none of the NVMe add-on cards are supported, so you just have a choice of using the internal NVMe as cache, or storage pool, but not both.

Can you confirm DS1621xs+ no longer supports NVMe add-on cards?

  Which NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-14-2023, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Looking to purchase my first NAS with two things in mind:
- backup for years of family photos,
- and to host our growing catalogue of movies purchased on iTunes.

I currently stream movies from iTunes via Apple TV (both physical boxes and some via Smart TV embedded apps). But I learned the hard way a few years ago that Apple can pull purchased content from its store meaning that, unless you have downloaded a copy, you lose access. I have therefore begun downloading all my purchases but, combined with all my photos, means I am now at c.3TB of content spread across my Mac and its 4TB Samsung SSD. And there is no where to back this up.

So, the main requirement of the NAS is to provide a backup to all this but, if I could stream content directly from it to other devices in my home network (Apple TVs, Smart TVs etc) then even better. My network is driven by an Asus XT12 Pro router with 2.5gbe LAN so I figure a NAS that can work at those speeds would be beneficial.

Trying to workout best way to go

Trying to keep this short due to char limit

Was maybe looking at getting the "Synology DiskStation DS1821+ 8-Bay" it says "Maximum Single Volume Size is 108TB" Is the 108TB the usable space after formatting does that include the space you lose from having an array, if you had 8 16TB drives can you have all that usable storage on one volume how about 18TB, at what stage would you be forced to have 2 volumes?

Thanks

buy Synology DS923+ NAS or QNAP TS464-8 ??
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-13-2023, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have been struggling with this decision for a while now.. I want to modernize (higher speeds, bigger CPU)

I am worried about the Synology's compatible list. I called their support line; they said.. the list is only the ones they have tested.. but if the drive is like a Western Digital Gold or Blank and is recognized.. no problem.. Same with the MVME.. They also said look at the incompatible list as those are drives known to have a problem

I am unsettled as the web site is not really suggesting the above..

QNAP seems good.. few restrictions... but does not have the Synology SHR file structure (very nice and stable) and the QNAP only has 8gb of memory possible (DS923+ - 32gb)

It would be great to get you and Tom from Lawrence Systems (ETC.). and Synology Tech Support/Sales... to chat about this.. and look to soften up the web site!

love your Youtubes, I watch them regularly and "Like" them

Any ideas to help with my decision?

Andy

Advice on Choosing the Correct Synology Device
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-13-2023, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, love your YouTube channel. I am looking to move from my Drobo that's attached to a 2008 MacMini, over to a Synology NAS. I am torn between the DS423+ and the DS923+, and would like to eventually be running SHR-2 but am also open to others. I generally use Macs for all my work. Google Workspace as well. I am looking to use it for file and photo (not professional) storage as well as possibly moving our home CCTV over to it, which is currently 3 Eufy cameras, but will be adding a few more. The camera feeds are shared with my mother so she can keep an eye on my grandfather in the home when I am not here with him. I have a Plex server that ran on my MacMini, but haven't added anything to the library since ripping DVDs years ago. It's mostly used for streaming rare MP3s I have. My question is mostly with the Surveillance Station. Does it run better on the Intel or AMD chips? Being able to keep a close eye on my 96 year old grandfather is important. I may also run a VM at some point.

  QNAP TS-262
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-13-2023, 02:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have just watched Should you Buy TS-262/264, my first experience with you. I am very happy to know of you as a resource. QNAP is LESS than a wealth of information. My Question: Can the TS-262 be configured to use two NVMe drives as primary storage (rather than caching) RAID 1 without using any SATA drives? I will be using this unit primarily as a home file server.
