  DAS for Video Editing
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-08-2023, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I run a small solo video production company and I'm looking to upgrade my storage solution. Currently I have a bunch of 2 TB hard drives laying around and I would like to change that.

I work with the Mac environment and I'm looking for a DAS. I don't necessarily need a NAS as I work alone and do not need to access my data remotely. I would like to edit large 4k Video files directly off my DAS, ideally with a thunderbolt connection. For that reason, I think it would make sense to go for a solution that offers NVME slots for caching, right?

I currently have around 8 TB waiting to be stored on there and expect around 2-3 TB of data per year. I would like to be able to configure the drives as RAID 5 or 6 and I would probably opt for 2 units so that I can create a backup every few months or so and store it off site.

Do you have any recommendation for me?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Have a nice day Smile

Cheers
Raul

Large drives & rebuild times + URE
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-08-2023, 07:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear Sir,

I've seen your YouTube video concerning large vs small drives with a lot of interest. I was hoping to find an answer to the issue of VERY long rebuild times on RAID5/6 systems with very large drives. In this rebuild period your array is very vulnerable, and a few URE's can make the entire RAID corrupt. I even think there is a graph, where it's pointed out that RAID 5 is no longer considered 'safe' when using large drives. As I'm about to upgrade my system to a 12 bay Synology NAS, I want the safest setup possible. Currently I'm using RAID 6, but is this still safe when using >20TB drives? Should I be considering other options like RAID 10 or ZFS or ... ?

I'm also using RAID scrubbing which is is a solution to prevent URE's I guess? And I also have an old NAS to backup the main system. I know RAID is not a backup, but it would be a real big bummer if the RAID system crashes during a rebuild.

Thanks,
Mark

What is the best configuration for ROON server
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-08-2023, 04:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Setting up a ROON music server with a Sonic Transporter and an NAS. I would like an 8 bay NAS for about 60 tb storage with mirrored drives. I am looking to set up as much cache and memory as possible for the best possible speed.
Thanks

  The best 8-Bay DAS (JBOD)
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-08-2023, 02:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

The products I found so far:

• OWC ThunderBay 8
• QNAP TL-D800C
• OWC ThunderBay Flex 8?

Criterion, as I don’t need the full NAS or RAID experience:

• quiet
• reliable
• fast (JBOD mode, HDD/SSD mix)
• Mac compatible (Mac Studio under macOS Ventura)
• future-proof?

Which 8-Bay DAS would you consider to be the best fit for my use case, please?

Followed all setup suggestions.Synology 423+ NAS seems healthy and runs normally EXCEPT: when I try to enable QC, I check the box and the ID box remains greyed out. Tried everything: restart Mac, restarted DSM 7.1, restart router.

  Backup NAS drive
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-07-2023, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello I own a Asustor AS5304T - 4 Bay NAS and I have 4 (8TB) drives in it. I would like to use a extra 8TB drive beside the four that are in the unit and hot swap it out every week or so with one of the drives in the Nas and keep the extra drive in my banks safety deposit box. in case of a fire or theft of the Nas. any help would be appreciated. P.S. also when i swap them out that the older version would automatically update with the new data. also any help with the raid setup to do this would be great thanks again.

WD Red SN700 as primary NAS disks
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-07-2023, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

The WD Red SA500 is made as a primary NAS (e.g. for Synology NAS) SSD instead of HDD. In addition, there is the WD Red SN700, an NVMe drive that is also made for NAS. There is no price difference between the two drives, but there is a speed difference. My question is, can the WD Red SN700 be used with an NVMe to SATA adapter? , The NVMe drive is then limited to SATA 600 speeds, but can be faster in random 4K, Q32 read/write. Furthermore, is a cache disk still required if this works?
