Best BYO NAS (with TruNAS) - Enquiries - 07-20-2023 In your opinion, would this be a good BYO (may be more outside the US)? You can get a (1) refurb HP Z240 CMT Workstation with 4-core Intel Xeon E3-1245V5, 64 GB DDR4 PC4 ECC memory, all drive cables and trays for $277 [PC Server and Parts]; (2) WD 10TB Red Plus drive (5) for $1000 [Microcenter]; Samsung 1TB EVO 970 Plus SSD for $50 for OS and containers; Intel 10 GB Nic [Amazon B001CY0P7G]; 3bay drive tray [Amazon B00HS23QZO] for $80. The 50 TB would go to a TruNAS Scale ZFS pool. Do you think about 24x7 power consumption would be too much given all else? Thank you. Love the podcast! RE: Best BYO NAS (with TruNAS) - ed - 07-21-2023 Thank you for your question! The hardware configuration you've mentioned seems to be a solid choice for a BYO (Build Your Own) NAS, especially with the TruNAS Scale ZFS pool in mind. The refurbished HP Z240 CMT Workstation with the 4-core Intel Xeon E3-1245V5 and 64 GB DDR4 PC4 ECC memory, along with the WD 10TB Red Plus drives and Samsung 1TB EVO 970 Plus SSD for the OS and containers, should provide a robust and capable setup. As for the 24x7 power consumption, it is expected to be similar to that of dedicated NAS systems. However, if power consumption is a concern, you may want to explore components from NAS brands like Synology, as they are often optimized for power efficiency. Ultimately, it comes down to the hardware choices and your specific requirements. |
