  NAS for Plex and HomeAssistant
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-11-2023, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello there, I'm trying to pick the right combination of hardware to use unraid for media server (Plex) and home automation (HomeAssistant). I prefer rackmount 1U to put it in my communication wall mount rack.
The 500€ target is ONLY for hardware, no disks included.
I am more inclined to DIY solution, i have no problem in assembly.
I souls apreciate your opinion/sugestion. Thank you

I am looking for a nas that will let me
-Access photos/videos from my iPhone
-Dump my iPhone photos/videos (like a cloud server)
-Backup my main computer on my network
-Do some light video editing/download video from a cloud locations
-Possibly stream video or just download to device then watch.
-preferably quiet in operation
Debating between F2-210 and ds220+ or any other 2 bay nas suggestions
Thanks
-Adam

  NAS for video editing (Resolve)
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-11-2023, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

G'Day, Rob, first and foremost, huge thank you for sharing your knowledge/experience. From being a venerable ignoramus and not knowing what NAS is, you guys are responsible for turning me into a slightly less ignorant non-networky person. I watch your videos for the info as well as the entertainment!!
I need to get a reasonably sized array on which I can edit 4k video (Resolve) and access remotely quite often. )Currently on a mac mini M1, hoping to upgrade to something with 10Gbe sometime, (budget allowing) Speaking of which, I am unfortunately on a very difficult budget. I have been scanning Marketplace/Amazon sales etc for a bargain, but so far, no luck. (unfortunately I missed your giveaway due to circumstance, but spotted quite a few clues.. 'Nightmare before Xmas' and others) Would something like a 1821+ or 1621+ with 10gbe and NVME caching do the job? What would you advise the ignoramus? Thanks again!!! Chris

  Replacement for QNAP TS-219P II
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-11-2023, 05:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
We use currently an old QNAP TS-219P II and a disk would need to be replaced. Now, the device reached its EOL and replacment would make sense. Used by 5 people in 4 different houses for Sync (Qsync) and backup only. Other features tried out but not really used. Also, no photo or streaming is used.
Goal: 2 bay, 4 TB for sync and backup. Low maintenance needed (Synology or QNAP seem to fit here).

I read about security concerns when it comes to QNAP and was tending towards the Synology DS220j or DS220+. I would say DS220+ would be the closer replacement of the QNAP, but I was wondering if the DS220j would not be sufficient for our simple need of sync and backup with low speed needed? Or maybe another QNAP? I see that spending more money can make sense but in the last 11 years we did NOT use any of the features expext sync and bckup. As long as security is same I would save that difference.
best and thank you,
Andres

  DS920+ memory
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-10-2023, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I was looking at your memory guide in the link below and noticed you had tested 16GB in the DS920+. This NAS has factory specs of a max of 8 GB, 4 on board and 4 expanded. Can you explain how this works and, if you know, why Synology wouldn't give that as a spec when the hardware can handle it.

Thanks!

  VPN
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-10-2023, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi There Lads,

Thanks to your YouTube Channel I have a DS920+ which is setup purely to run Plex with direct and remote access. It’s mint…so firstly thanks for that!
I’m using an iOS app DSdownloads and DSfile to download and manage torrents directly from my phone to the NAS which is also mint. What I’d appreciate is recommendation / guidance on is how best to introduce a VPN to avoid unwanted ISP attention but still have Plex work seamlessly with remote access. I have not used a VPN previously and I’m definitely not tech savvy, that said, I’ve got this far, largely thanks to you!
Thanks in advance.

  Hot Spare with larger drive
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-10-2023, 02:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good Morning

I have a Synology DS420+ with a 3 drive SHR comprised of 3 - 8TB WD Red Plus drives. I would like to have a hot spare since we are on the road for weeks at a time and not around to handle a drive failure. If I use a low hours WD100EZAZ 10 TB drive that I have on hand will it use just 8TB of the 10TB spare or will I be locked in to 10TB or larger for future drives. I would like to stick with 8TB drives in the future.

Thanks.

  What to buy
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-10-2023, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi

Really enjoy watching your reviews on the Ds Synology I originally had a 3tb wd cloud my cloud home one , which I used as to stream on my 3 smart tvs and on the phones the single bay one which the fan got noisy as it was over 9 years old now so I have removed the 3td Red Nas out of it and I was wandering whether I should get another WD cloud my home one or should I get a synology as I am attracted by the plex server rather than the boring dlna file server on tv as I think the WD cloud I had was the old model , would the DS120J be able to handle what I have been doing previously with the WD or do I need a synology 2 bay one please ? My concern is what you mentioned about the ds120j being 800 mhz and only having 512mb ram not sure what my WD cloud had ? so I need your advice my budget is £200 and really 3tb is all I need ?

Thanks

Ricky
