  Advice about used HDDS
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-10-2023, 07:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello and thank you in advance for the advice. I'll try and keep this as short as possible.
I am looking to turn my old PC into a home Plex/Jellyfin server (used Plex for years but thinking about switching to Jellyfin)
I'm looking to get as much storage as possible on the cheap...was thinking about getting 2 used EXOS drives from either ServerPartDeals or GoHardDrive. Tons of people on reddit have had good things to say about them as well as bad things. Was wondering if you had experience with either or both? I don't know anything about RAID - was just looking to get a huge amount of storage for media storage (if a drive fails eventually the data can be easily replaced) SVP offers a 2 year warranty while GHD offers a 5 year - the drives i was looking at Seagate Exos X16 14TB or Seagate Exos X18 14TB depending on SVP or GHD. Also do you think EXOS is the way to go? They also have WD ultrastar drives for around the same price.
Thank you thank you thank you Smile

  NAS recommendation
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-10-2023, 06:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I'm completely new to NAS and am looking to create some home media storage primarily for photographs, music and movies.

I would like the music files to be accessible by my Sonos system although I am looking to use Plex for movies so may investigate using Plex for music also - I'm not very familiar with Plex at the moment.

With regard to streaming movies through Plex, it would primarily be to a Samsung QE75QN85BATXXU so would any transcoding be handled by the TV or is that still a requirement of the NAS?
A friend uses the Synology DS920+ but looking at your reviews the newer 923+ is not a great update in some ways but is better in some regards?

I am a hobby level photographer so need to store, organise and edit images. Am I able to use the processing power of the NAS to edit using Photoshop?

What would you recommend?

Many thanks for your help
Regards
Paul

  Choosing RAID level
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-09-2023, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,
My question is, should I choose RAID level 5 or 6 if I have a 5-bay NAS with all bays populated with 20 TB drives? If 5-bay expansions are added, should I expand the same RAID over them, or create new RAID group(s) and why?
Recently I watched one of your videos on YouTube titled "Choosing the Right NAS RAID Guide" (https://youtu.be/5K8szc9gDYw), and although it contains information about various RAID levels out there, that's not what I would expect from a video like that. You see, there is already plenty of information about RAID levels on the Internet (including NAS's manufacturer's own websites). So as an idea for a future video, perhaps, would be to go over all possible NAS configurations (like, 2-bay NAS, 4-bay, 4-bay with 5 bay expansion, etc.) and specify which RAID level would *you* recommend setting up in each specific case (with justification).

  Which one after a DS213+
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-09-2023, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, we are using a DS213+ from 10 years, great HW, never had an HD failure...(2x 1TB - model WD10EFRX) we are at 50% now. I am thinking it's time for an upgrade to avoid troubles and increase speed. Currently i am using 1 usb port for external backup and 1 port for UPS connection, never used usb front port. I had a nightmare last week because after the last DSW sw update for about 2 hours network cards didn't work...panic...now seems to works even the eth lights aren't blinking as usual...due that i am considering to urgent upgrade.
We are 4 of us in the office, use: 90% is file sharing and partial pc/mac daily backup (i would increase and make complete BK, so increasing TB may be interesting), openVPN external connection, some local db sharing for our CMS, ics cal.
Worth to upgrade to Qnap ? i am very addicted to Synology but it lacks some feature nowdays...i would appreciate so much for your suggests and support. Thank you
Paolo

  DS220J slow after camera install
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-09-2023, 04:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I purchased my first NAS, a Synology DS220J about 18 months ago, mostly for photo and Desktop backup. I had a lot of photos and so it was slow to index them all and still a little slow, but livable to use when editing them.
Recently I installed two ip cameras and the performance/response has become almost unusable both for surveillance station and for photos.
The NAS is not doing anything else, so why so slow with only two cameras. The memory is at 60% and the CPU is less than 15%.

Thanks.

For home use is it most economical to buy a 2 bay and then to buy a USB Hard drive hub?
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-09-2023, 01:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm looking to start a photo server for my family and am thinking of hosting it using a 220+. The tricky thing is to keep costs down I want raid 6 or to do a raid 10 which would allow me to buy used hard drives online (I don't care about warranty) . I found 2 4TB Ironwolf Pro 's for $50 each and I checked them out and they've been working fantastically. I know I want to expand to at least another 2 4TB drives and probably more later.

Right now I'm making due with a 2 bay Fideco USB 3.0 Hard Drive hub. Since I don't need crazy read/write speeds (1-2 users at a time tops) could I use this hub and switch to a bigger hub later on? What are the external expansion limits for Synology or others?

What really is the difference between running a hard drive on a Synology internally vs externally? Are there things you aren't able to do?

  Terramaster DAS RAID enclosures
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-08-2023, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm new to RAID & have some questions. To start with, can I start out with 3 HDDs in a 5 or 8-bay Terramaster RAID enclosure configured for RAID 5 & add drives of the same storage capacity later to increase storage capacity without having to do anything else? Thanks, Gary

First NAS for advanced PC user
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-08-2023, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey,

I am really lost looking for a NAS for quite some time. Bought the DS723+ because of a good offer and noticed it does not really fit my needs (No iGPU). So what my needs?
- File Storing and Sharing at home an on the go
- Media Sharing with family and friends
- Backupping some more ore less important Code and 3D Work
- Some virtualization for small projects and small webhosting
- As storage for retro games (roms) and saves to excess them from home and on the go

Currently in my sight is the DS220+, but its a quite long time on the market now and the upgradeability is low i think (more bays or ram in the future)

Thanky a lot!

  NAS (or other) selection
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-08-2023, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I m new to the NAS/Server world. I don't think I need a full blown server at this point so that is why I am looking at NAS solutions.

I have a small design/manufacturing business and need some way to have a central storage/access solution for files. There will be about 10 users with most being remote from the NAS location. Only I will be in the same physical location as the NAS.

Obviously security is a concern, but so is speed and flexibility. I have been watching lots of videos on the TS-464 vs the DS923+. The flexibility and better hardware of the 464 appeals to me, but being new the easier setup/use of the 923+ is appealing while the more locked down hardware really bothers me about it. Seems like a merging of the 2 would be ideal but as usual such a beast never seems to exist.
