  NAS for video editing
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-21-2022, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Can I hire you to assist me in getting a NAS (Thunderbolt ?) solution for my small video production business? Ideally I'd also like to back this up to DropBox or Backblaze cloud. Ideally I'd like to purchase this in next couple days before end of the year.

Thanks

QNAP - Multiple Thin volumes vs. Single Thick volume with Multiple folders
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-21-2022, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm new to NAS Smile
I bought a single-bay QNAP NAS to backup all my cloud services. Google Drive, Dropbox, and One Drive.
Should I create 3 Thin volumes, one for each cloud service, or one Thick volume with 3 folders inside?
Thank you

Question Attaching SSDs in Synology drive caddy question
Posted by: Teza4 - 12-21-2022, 03:00 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (1)

Hi all. I’ve been using Synology for years but haven’t used SSD until now. When using SSD in a synology I have come across an issue. I have watched many NCvideos but never seen Nick put an SSD in a caddy, screw it in then attach the plastic hard drive retainer strips. My question is do you attach both retaining plastic strips to the caddy when using SSD? Due to the position of the screwed-in SSD, the top retainer fits ok, but the bottom doesn’t. One of the two holes for the retainer is obscured by the SSD. Thanks in advance. Great resource you’ve created by the way!!

  NAS for Plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-21-2022, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
you make a good job and it is important to have someone who fights with all these offerings.
I have the 418play but I need a new one, one, with which I can also work on with my own made videos.
My problem is, that in all your recent tests I can not find a good solution or successor of my 418play. (only the overpowered ones with an i9 processor I don't want because of the heat and energy they waste), let alone price.
So, which NAS can you recommend for being and excellent 418play successor for encoding and also be fast/good enough for cutting videos on the NAS?
Kind regards and thanks
Wieland

  Home NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-21-2022, 02:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

We have WD MyCloud, which is now well past its due date. It is slow and gives us a headache while using Yamaha Musiccast audio streaming (we need something better than 7-year-old Twonky). After this experience with underpowered NAS, I am wary of ARMs.

We are looking for secure storage for music, movies and photos (raid 1?). Preferably accessible over the internet. Streaming music to a home system and films to a projector.
We are a family of four, incrementally starting to use a device each. Currently using about 4TB, and the capacity needs to grow. I do not see a use case for VM (are there any for home users who are not IT geeks?).

I watched all your videos ? and looked at 2- and 4-bays. I am unsure how one would increase capacity in the future if it were only 2-bay with raid 1.

What do you recommend?

  WD Drives transfer
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-21-2022, 06:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there, I have a DS418play, with 4 x 8tb WD Red Plus drives, this NAS is getting a little old and seems a little slow. I have just watched the video on the 'best NAS for photographers' with the DS923+ (I have lots of photos). So thinking about buying the newer DS923. Can I just take the drives out of my 418 and plug straight into a DS918+? Is there anything I would need to do or would the new NAS just recognize the drives and work? Thanks Stephen

Synology "System Default Folders" Btrfs issue
Posted by: jlapva - 12-21-2022, 05:17 AM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (3)

Hi.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.  I'm a hobbyist at best with NAS. I purchased the Synology DS923+ as an upgrade  from my DS415Play.  I followed the setup instructions from NAS Compares that were very helpful...Thanks guys!  I chose to migrate the data via Hyper Backup so I could change the file system from ext4 on the 415 to Btrfs on the 923+.  The Backup and Restore went great…but when the 923+ generated the System Default Folders during the restore, that is, the photos, videos, music, folders etc. they were all generated via the restore with the Advanced Data Integrity feature disabled!  Of course a big reason for the change to Btrfs was this feature.  Can you guys help me out of this?  All of the DS apps  for photo, music, video etc use the system default folders and I would like to maintain a vanilla type environment.  Is there anyway I can regenerate the system default folders and set the advanced data integrity feature to “enabled”?  I know I can create a new shared folder and move the data but that new folder won’t be the “system default folder” for all of the functions of the apps.  Would appreciate advice.

Thank you.

Best cheap NAS to backup my Synology to
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-21-2022, 04:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am replacing 4TB drives in my Synology DS 1520+ with 8TB drives. (I'm using SHR1.) So I will have three 4TB drives left over. How can I use them to backup my NAS?

I am thinking the best is a cheap second NAS and using the left-over drives in RAID 0 config to be able to backup most of my stuff.

Do you think this could work or is RAID0 too risky for a backup? What is the cheapest NAS enclosure you can recommend for this? Should it be a Synology for better software compatibility?

Many thanks for any pointers!

  How to proceed?
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-21-2022, 12:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi! I run a PMS on my 2012 8 core Mac Pro and I usually have 4 drives in a non-RAID, but I do a 1 to 1 backup of each drive using Carbon Copy Cloner. I've planned for her eventual demise by picking up a DS920+ and I've loaded it up with 4-18 TB Exos drives (not Syn. supported, but functioning). Thing is, I'm so used to doing a 1-1 backup nightly, I'm not sure how to proceed in configuring the drives in the 920+. My library is sort of large (~2,000 movies, ~200 TV shows) and I'm adding more 4K titles slowly, but surely. What would be the most efficient and safe way to set up the unit? RAID5? This is my first NAS and I'm a complete noob, so bear with me. I can't quite find anything online to advise me, so I thought I'd see what you have to offer. Thanks, Bob

  Extending drives with asm1166/jmb585
Posted by: JajajTec - 12-20-2022, 11:53 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (2)

Hi!
I Have been asking myself if it is possible to extend a DS (1522+/1821+/whatever in that range) with a pcie sata extension chip like asm1166 (probably the more fitting one) or jmb585. Because if yes, you could theoretically just put one of these into the pci slot and then route the sata into a drive-case.
Can anybody having a DS with pcie maybe test it?
It would be just to good to be true… and why has pretty much noone talked about this before? Because with the asm1166 you could theoretically extend a ds1621+ with 36 drives or even up to 108 DRIVES if you really wanna go bonk and own a soldering iron…

Hope i have written that correctly…
