Time Machine on DS423+ |

Thank you for your quick reply yesterday about my problems with Time Machine on my DS423+. I don't think I was clear with my first question and I hope I can bother you one more time. I have setup Time Machine on my DS423+ according to NAScompares instructions. When I go to TM settings in MacOS I see my new TM volume on the NAS along with my old TM volume on an external USB drive. Both are active, both have up to date snapshots. I want to verify that the NAS backups are usable before I remove the USB backup. But when I try to browse TM backups in MacOS I don't see the NAS volume, only the USB volume is browsable. It's almost as if the NAS volume has write privileges and not read privileges, is that possible? I've asked about this at Apple community and at Synology community with no help. It doesn't make sense that MacOS sees the NAS volume in TM settings but doesn't see it in TM browse mode but right now I don't know what else to try. Thanks for your help!

Nas and Shield |

Hello,
I'm choosing my first NAS, I need storage for movies. Right now Nvidia Shield Pro is connected to the TV, as it plays 4K, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos (in my case via PLEX).
Did I correctly understood that if I connect NAS and Shield to the same network, I can play movies through the Shield in their original quality (without compression and re-encoding) on a TV using the Shield's processor? I need to install Plex media server to Shield and enable external storage on it to see my NAS files?
I looked after myself DS223, as it is budgetary and should be suitable for my tasks. At first I looked at DS223j, but it only has 1gb ram and it scared me away.

Hi. I'm a photographer. I'm looking to get a NAS for my photo archives. Mainly I'll be storing JPEG or RAW files inside. Will the embedded graphic chip affect photo viewing speed? Most reviews I've seen online are about videos, but what about photo encoding? I need to browse the photo quickly and not wait for them to decode one by one. Thanks.

I have a new DS423+ with 2 8tb drives in SHR. I set up a Time Machine folder for my M1 Mac Air according to instructions on NAScompares. When I go to TM settings in MacOS I see the shared folder and I see that backups are current, everything appears to be running OK. But when I try to browse that folder so I can verify the backups actually work I don't see the NAS folder, only the original TM folder on a USB drive. I've asked about this at Apple community, at the Synology chat room and on the SynoCommunity discord but I get no answers. This is probably outside the scope of your free help but I have run out of people to ask and thought maybe you could point me in the right direction. Thanks for any help you can give me!

Best BYO NAS (with TruNAS) |

In your opinion, would this be a good BYO (may be more outside the US)? You can get a (1) refurb HP Z240 CMT Workstation with 4-core Intel Xeon E3-1245V5, 64 GB DDR4 PC4 ECC memory, all drive cables and trays for $277 [PC Server and Parts]; (2) WD 10TB Red Plus drive (5) for $1000 [Microcenter]; Samsung 1TB EVO 970 Plus SSD for $50 for OS and containers; Intel 10 GB Nic [Amazon B001CY0P7G]; 3bay drive tray [Amazon B00HS23QZO] for $80.
The 50 TB would go to a TruNAS Scale ZFS pool. Do you think about 24x7 power consumption would be too much given all else?
Thank you. Love the podcast!

Replacing my old synology 1010+ with a new NAS. Leaning towards the 923+ rather than 423+. Would that be overkill for home user? Mainly music and photos at the mo but wanting to add Hikvision cameras at some point soon. Is that possible with Synology? Thanks so much - learning lots from your channel. Adrian
