  Synology M2 NVme Heat Sink
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-21-2023, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello and I hate seagulls too!
I recently added two 800G Synology M2NVme sticks (SNV3410) to my DS923+.
You mentioned in a previous video that Synology should have catered for heat sinks for their NVmes.
Can I purchase heat sinks? If so, which heat sink would you recommend I purchase to fit the Synology NVme sticks and how should I install them?
You may actually consider turning this response into a short video because I am sure that a lot of people out there are scratching their head over this same question.
Thanks a lot and keep up the good work!
Kind regards,
Guillaume

  NAS for Small Business
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-21-2023, 02:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm a first time NAS buyer. I'm basically looking for a replacement of the various cloud services out there. So, what would I like to do:
Business part:
Storing all kinds of documents and accessing them from everywhere as possible with MS 365.
Sharing documents with customers and using the NAS to collaborate
I want to connect a network scanner to work with paperless ngx for managing all the scanned documents.
It needs to be as secure as possible as a potential loss or theft of data could be detrimental

private and business
use as main storage for a professional photo archive and to work from it with Lightroom and Photoshop
use as main storage for smartphone photos and videos, similiar to what's available with the google cloud on android phones.

All of that for seperate users.

Use it as the central place of all of my data and to manage a backup strategy, maybe via second NAS located at a friends home.

In future:
connect with surveillance cameras

  Advice required
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-21-2023, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
I follow your videos mostly to learn more about Nases.
I'm a normal french dude (please excuse my approximate English), not so nerdy (ie totally newbie on Linux system), but I'm interssed in Nases.
I need a backup and storage for my datas (video & pictures mostly also office files)
I want to use Flex to stream my contents on my devices
I try to reduce my GAFAM uses, so I wanted to operate a efficient cloud storage to my photos.
I wanted a NAS able to manage my video houseprotection footages.
Maybe also create an mail manager system.
Don't need VM (yet)

I was thinkingg to purchase a synology system wich is more accessible with my unkwnoledge.
I already have 4 brand new WD Red Pro 12T0 in order to build a Raid 5 Nas
I hesitate between the ds923+ and 423+ or maybe 1522+ or 920+
I think the 423+ will be more appropriate for my needs and I was thinking you could give me a good advice before spending my money.
Regards

Denis

  TERRAMASTER U4-423
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-21-2023, 09:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi there,

I have a Synology DS218+ that I’d like to upgrade and preferably rack mount.

I’ve just seen your video on the TerraMaster U4-423. I’ve never actually heard of TerraMaster before and looking locally it’s quite a compelling price point. Do you think it would handle some running VM’s (if upgrading the RAM) for a Plex and potentially a game server. I’d probably also look to running TrueNAS on it.

I’ve considered using some old PC parts to build something comparable, but I quite like the idea of a neat and tidy all in one solution.

Would love to know if you feel there is something else I should consider too.

Kind regards,

Sebastian.

  migrate off drobo nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-20-2023, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I guess it is time to migrate off my drobo fs. currently have 8 tb of movies and personal files. need rackmount nas. have qnap ts-231 backing up 6 tb of the drobo data. which qnap would you recommend. The drobo currently houses our plex media which is streamed by an i7 mac mini. It would potentially be a bonus to stream plex from the NAS but not required. thanks in advance

  NAS for media server
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-20-2023, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi I currently have an old 4TB Seagate Central which is now full. I use it to store media files to play via the Infuse app by Firecore on 2x Apple TV's and an iPhone when I'm away from home. I was looking at the Sinology DS923+ but saw your review and wasn't sure if it would be the right solution. Hardware wise I was looking for at least 4 bays with around 1x 8TB SSD to start with and then add more when needed. I'm also not sure how much memory I world need, would I benefit from a 10GBE connectivity or M.2 NVME SSD. I was looking more at SSD storage as this seems to be faster, cooler, quieter and all round better option but am not bothered iid you think HDD would better suit my requirements / usage. I'm not really worried about raid as I know this is more for redundancy and so I always have everything backed up on portable HDD's. Any advice you can give me on my best options and where to buy from would be greatly appreciated.

  RAM upgrade for DS1817+
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-20-2023, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Which 16Gb RAM module would you recommend to upgrade this 7ish year old NAS storing tonnes of old UK tv shows (Doctor Who incl.) and most Star Trek series
Running DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 6

I'd imagine that 8 -> 32 should help somewhat
There are 2 NVME 256

NAS has tossed 3 drives so far - but running hours are 51.600 and counting

Dropped Plex server on her - that runs in a Core-i 5 HP EliteDesk G4 with 16gb and 1tb NVME - sort of works until you hit pure UHD files, then the AppleTV Player goes Jeremy Clarkson - and it's back to 1080p

Best regards and great info channel

I want to upgrade my computer so that I can better use my old Synology DS1618+ as a cloud server. Running plex for example. What do you recommend for hardware configuration? Processor, RAM and etc. I have become quite obsolete. LOL Dell is my preferred vendor.
