  home data storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-03-2024, 01:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

most my data is film/tv, not massively important, be a bummer to loose it all tho; even if easily replaceable or not worth replacing. would like redundancy. important data is rarer collections: some film/tv, mostly music & books, articles, pdfs, photos etc. likely replaceable if it came to it, but just losing it would make some of it unlikely to be recovered due to forgetting what its called. the critical, i say less than 1tb but its likely half that even. itd be all personally created documents, files, photos, videos, music etc. currently running a 4th gen I5 tower w/ 16gb ddr3. as soon as i copy data to a 8tb hdd and my c: drive to a new 2tb nvme, ill be swapping to a gen 8 i7 with 32gb ddr4. ill hopefully be bringing along a 4tb hdd, 4tb ssd, 1tbssd and have everything runnin much more efficiently. i currently watch most of that content on a regular flatscreen (not-smart) i have limited internet and dont expect that to change, using ps3, micca or comp. limited on space and money

  Transition from Drobo 5N2
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-02-2024, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

I have a Drobo 5N2 with a 256GB mSata containing 5 ea, 4TB WD Red drives configured with double redundancy giving me 10.84TB usable with about 1TB being used. I use it for music access via a Naim Unitiserve over the network and for photography backup. The 5N2 was bought in 2018 to replace a Drobo FS that failed after 6 years and that is when the WD Red drives were added also. After seeing your YouTube video about Drobo going Chapter 11 I think I better start looking for a replacement. I access it over a home 1GB CAT-5 network. It has worked well this +5 years but I don't want to be stuck if it decides to fail like the FS did.

My desire is to get a NAS setup that is faster than the 80-100MB/sec I currently get. Is that possible with my 1GB CAT-5 network? I also have an Apple Studio Ultra that makes the NAS painful to use for photo access. Maybe get a reasonably prices NAS for music access and photo backup then use a DAS for photography access?

Your comments appreciated.

NAS for running about 16 virtual PCs
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-02-2024, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I need to provide my students with PCs running Adobe flash as most of my resources use it. So far I provide free Lenovo laptops (which run flash OK) (refurbished). Unfortunately, some are needing updates and repair. which is costly and slow.
Is it possible on a Qnap NAS to run up to 20 virtual PCs (cloned from the laptops I use already, as virtual PCs?
I run Teamviewer for remote access when needed at the moment.
We have Internet download speeds of about 800Mb/second and upload speed of about 1000Mb second using fibre to home.
If possible how easy would it be to update the resources on the virtual PCs? Kind regards
Tony

NAS for my company (43 employed company)
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-02-2024, 02:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Greetings,

Excellent stuff.
Both your webpage, your website and your YouTube page are great!

I'm really overwhelmed with so many NAS options available.
I'm really interested in buying a Qnap or Synology NAS, but I can't decide which would be better.

I would like to use it for my mail server, back up my files and run container apps, as well as redundancy for the 3rd party cloud and also add my camera system in the 3 offices (São Paulo - main, Rio de Janeiro and Brasília)

Best wishes in advance
Gabriel De Belli

I want to keep my data backed up. I am tired of paying cloud prices every year. What would you recommend for a personal/work at home Backup drive?

Thanks

  NAS for video editing
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-31-2023, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I plan to video editing 4K to 6K footage in 2024. I use Final Cut Pro. I have the latest es M1 and M3 macs. I need to be able to edit between my home and work. That means uploading and downloading footage so I can either start or continue video editing projects from either location. Basically bouncing between locations. I also need to be able to send links for other people to review video projects. I plan to setup a 10GB network but also have Thunderbolt 4 ports with the new Macs. I like ti edit fast if possible on my NAS or at least access fast uploaded footage. What NAS do you recommend I purchase now or should I wait for what 2024 brings? I heard Synology has the best software nut not the fastest hardware. So I’m confused. Any advice or recommendations is greatly appreciated. Feel free to send me links to purchase a NAS system. Thank you very much.

Does the Terramaster F4-424 NAS have an internal USB port (like the F4.423) that can be used to run UnRaid?

Unofficial Cap on Memory for ds723+

I am curious on what the max amount of RAM possible for a ds723+ is? I am going to use some off-brand sticks to upgrade, and was wondering if 64gb was possible.

  DS923+ or DS423+ or DS723+ Purchase advice
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-30-2023, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi I am new to the forum and Nas world. I have been following you on YT, I am currently using a 2020 WD 6TB My Cloud EX2 Ultra with 6tb. I am using mainly for streaming Flac file music for streaming, photos docs etc and mobile, latop backups. My question is I am I want the ability to future proof as best as I can. Also can I use my existing Nas or drives WD30EFRX-68EUZN0 in the new DS Nas. What would be the best cost effective solution and I need drives what should go for ? Thanks
