  Proxmox on nimbustor 4
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-22-2023, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, nice tutorial on proxmox install on asustor Nas. How did you get the drive to show up in proxmox and be available for zfs etc. As proxmox states it can't work with a hardware raid controller in place.

Can I move my Nas drives to an Expansion unit
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-22-2023, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there,

I have a Qnap TS-673A full with 8tb Ironwolf pros in raid5 and I've ran out of space.

I was going to buy a TL-D800c and start by populating it with 3 x Toshiba n300 16tb's in raid5 and add one drive at a time when I needed/could afford them until I filled it.

Ideally I'd like to populate my TS-673A with 16tb drives and have the 8tb ironwolfs in the TL-D800c. But don't have available storage to back it up before moving everything around.

Could I move my 6 x 8tb ironwolfs from my Nas and put them into the TL-D800c and the Nas still recognise them and their raid? As if so I could leave them there and populate the Nas with 16tbs. I know you could do this with two compatible Nas's, but cannot find any info on expansion units.

Many thanks

Yasha

Access photos mobile app from internet
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-22-2023, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi,
I hope I am reaching out through the correct channel. I already sent a coffee maybe a year ago and submitted a question you answered. So, I hope it's the correct way to ask a generic question.

I'll paste the specifications of my NAS below.

Basically, I want to be able to access the photos on my NAS from outside my WIFI network. I have setup a shared space (/photo folder) and a personal space (home/photos), which are both working and being accessible from the IOS "Photos Mobile" app... when I'm connected to my WIFI network at home.
The problem I have is that I can't access it when I'm outside with my mobile data. I originally set it up like this on purpose (aka not accessible from outside), but now I want to access it outside, I can't find what I need to change to be able to do that.

Can you help pointing me to the correct direction?

See below more details about the specs.

Thanks so much !!

Phone: Iphone 8
Sinology: DS220J
2 x 4 TB seagate ironwolf Drives

Hello,
**Requirements**
Currently dont have more than 2tb of data.

Automatically backup two Macbooks, (maybe utlising Apples Time Machine... but not essential)
Storing my photography images as external storage, I use

Lightroom to manage my catalog so I dont need any photo manager, just the ability to access on demand if I need to edit them.

**Thoughts so far**
After reading/watching reviews I understand a 4 bay would make logical sense for upgradability, BUT I dont think I can stretch to that budget at the moment, unless sales are kind. So I have been looking at the Synology DS223 or DS224+ and then to house either two 4tb or 6tb hdds to then use either RAID 0 or SHR, (I think SHR would allow me to buy a 4 bay in future, mix the old drives with some new ones and carry one)

For my rather simple usage, do I even need to look as far as a 224+ or would something like a DS223j be enough even with its meagre proccesing power?

Any advice / ideas welcomed.

  NAS Repair DS2020+
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-22-2023, 09:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi - By any cahnce can you offer any advide on where to get a DS2020+ repaired (out of warranty)?

I simply plugged in a USB (powered) hub into the rear USB which seems to have blown what I hoped would be a fuse inside the NAS.

I can't believe it has no fused protection on the board and that it was so easily damaged, it's really put me off buying another.

Thank you - any advice is gratefully recieved.

Hi! I have a 423+ and got the 16 gb crucial RAM in there today and the system won't boot. I tried it with all the drives out and it still won't boot.
I got DDR4 3200 SODIMM. Did I get the right thing? Are there any troubleshooting steps I should take?

Thank you

  Plex-Windows/TrueNas
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-21-2023, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi ...I'm recently new to servers and Plex ..I have a spare pc which has a i7-3770k GTX 970 and 32GiB RAM with 2 1TB HDDs and 2 250 GiB SSDs

I'm curious to know if the specs are good enough for some sort of system?
I'm looking to create a Plex or jellyfin system which I can use for a home cinema ..movies TV shows etc.

I know windows ok but windows server is new to me and True Nas is also new to me .... where should I start ? There's so many videos on unraid/truenass/windows etc it's hard to make the right move

Also I do know the i7-3770k and the mobo doesn't support ECC memory.....I think ?

Hopefully I've given enough info
Kind regards Stephen

  NAs setup advice?
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-21-2023, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi , hope you are doing well.

I recently bought synology nas ds923+ AMD version with 3 - 8TB 7200rpm seagate. i am confused with how to setup.

As this is my first Nas and beginner user ( but good knowledge about tech).
i thought the following:

1. 2 raid 1 with 4 drives. 1 set for personal and other for random. (i guess i dont want to waste my drive or didnt like the idea myself.) and want to setup the Nas mentioned below:

2. raid 5 with 3 8tb drives ( budget ), 2 logical volume - one for personal data ex. photos (encrypted ) 2nd for random stuff.

i would like to have a pro advise in this matter.
and also SHR is it better incase of my raid 5 idea? does it have any improvement over raid 5 as its synology developed.

Regards,

  Open Source Hardware NAS Box
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-21-2023, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good Afternoon NAS Compares Team,

Do you know of any device like the Kobol - Helios64 Open Source NAS?

https://kobol.io/

The NAS form factor is the right size for my needs, coupled with the overall drive capacity it supports, the built in UPS is a nice feature to have included in the setup.

Also I would like to have full controll over the OS and software packages, that run on the NAS itself.

Kind Regards

Adam

  DIY NAS advise

These are the parts that i have currently laying around at home.

CPU: i9-9900k
Memory: VENGEANCE® RGB PRO 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 DRAM 3600MHz C18
Motherboard: ROG Maximus XI Gene / MSI MPG Z390I GAMING EDGE AC
GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio 8GB
PSU: Corsair SF600 Platinum / Corsair AX760

Currently using a Synology DS1621+ with 6x10TB. It is mainly used to backup photos/videos and for Plex-ing.
These are the apps that i am currently use since the first time i started NAS-ing with my first Synology DS916+ in 2017.
1. radarr
2. nzbhydra2
3. jackett
4. sonarr
5. tautulli
6. deluge
7. watchtower
8. bazarr
9. filezilla
10. speedtest
11. nzbget

With the DIY NAS, i am hoping to move away from Synology totally or at least have Synology to be for backups only and move the Plex to the DIY NAS and maybe have some VMs for lab.
