Currently, we have an Synology DS416play as Main storage and an DS120j for the backup. Since a few months we get more and more error messages and especially the main NAS feels very slow. Replacing the harddisks did not help, so we assume that we need a new one soon and looking for a performant setup with easy Backup Solution. Currently, we use 7 TB of data and think that around 10-12TB should be sufficient for the upcoming years. We are happy with the diskstation software, but the available Hardware looks quite old.

First up, love your site, ween watching for years. I have a Synology NAS DS916+ with an expansion. After watching your video regarding the Ironwolf Pro update from NE to NT, almost all of the compatible discs are not compatible. They suggested Pro NAS 12TB ST12000NT001 - I wanted to add a 22tb. Any advice?

Sorry for the silly question, but is there a way to attach a second NAS to a primary NAS (perhaps using the second ethernet on each?). I've recently relegated my older Synology HDD NAS and replaced with an NVME based Asustor NAS. The reason was simply the noise of the HDs would keep me awake at night (how pretentious a reason is that). Anyway, at the moment - I switch on the synology once a month and manually backup the files from the Asustor - both are attached to my router but speeds are not great so wondered if there was a method to connect the two directly?
Any help appreciated. And if it's not clear from the question, yes I'm a networking noob.

I have search Google and yes there is a lot of different opinions out there so not to do anything wrong here i will try ask here also.

I have a good working TS-559 Pro II running RAID5 fine with 5 x 3TB disc's but 2 of the drives is standard consumer drives and i now have 2 more Red disc i would like to change in the system.
How do i do this the most easy but also safe way

Can i just pull out one of the disc and put in a new one wile NAS is still running or do i need to shut down and change one disc at a time ?

TS-559 Pro II RAID 5 latest firmware 4.2.6 (Sad no newer FW) but thats life i'm only using my NAS for file sharing and its doing alright but as i said i'm afraid the standard 2 disc will die on me
so now when i have to better WD Red disc i think i should swop them.

Forgot to say. All disc in the NAS now is all 3TB drives but the two new ones are both 5TB disc. They will still work together with the other 3TB disc right ?

I have recently taken interest in NAS technology and quickly found your channel to be the most resourceful.

I got a great business opportunity i've been wanting for years and things happened very quickly, i couldn't allocate enough resources towards buying a NAS.
With the help of your videos i managed to pick two IronWolf 6 TB drives (i might have overestimated my storage needs) and enclosures, i currently back up my work to these (makeshift raid 1 where i am the processor) and to the cloud.
I now am considering a decent RAID 6 setup.
I am a tech enthousiaste but no professional. I won't be a huge pain in the ass, but i want professionals to advise on critical stuff.

I just got a a ds916 and would like to set up for mac timemachine. Is there a raid type where I can back up across different drives where if one drive fails I don't loose all data? Or do I have to use SHR with redundnacy and having to use twice as many drives? Duplicating everything? I would also. like to be able to add more drives as my data grows. Note my schime involves also backing up to as separate system with the shr and redundancy but not the history and role back element of timemachine. Also with the NAS and its error checking would I be warned if one of the drives was dying if I opted for a system with the data striped across all drives?

Hi. For the last 3/4 years l have used my wd my cloud home 4gb single bay device. I use it exclusively with Plex when away from home, so my needs are minimal, it has recently gone belly up, l would like to burgle it for the HDD. ( Good luck to me on that. I'm not impressed with WD so am thinking of getting another brand similar 1bay device which is Plex friendly. Can you suggest the best low budget/compatible device for me. I'm a technology idiot but nevertheless learnt such a lot from your videos. How on earth do you find the time to put out so much info, keep up the good work and thanks. GREAT COMMITMENT. I used to build my own NAS systems, operatiing with OpenMediaVault, just serving as NFS file server. very quietly operating in big tower Fractal cases.
One issue is, that the systems can not be upgraded from version to version, and that makes it difficult.

I will lease the business next year. My boss wants me to order a commercial NAS for now with easy maintenance and operation, and that also consumes much less energy.
I am really confused by so many informations and options.

The network was recently upgraded from 1 to 10 GB, 2.5G is operating quite well and I think that this should be standard, with the option to upgrade to 10G.
We don't know if a rack-mounted option would be superior, but could we use such a case without rack too?
At least 6 bays should be o.k, better 8.
