  DS418play upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-17-2023, 12:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi - Love your site and I find your videos to be very educational.

I had a DS418play that fried on me and need to upgrade. My primary uses are for home and I run Synology surveillence station and streaming Plex. Mainly to set top boxes and smart TVs that allow for the Plex app install.

I'm looking at the
- DS224+ (I like this because of the integrated GPU)
- or -
- DS923+ because of the future proofing but unfortunately lack of integrated GPU.

I'm having a hard time deciding because I like the idea of having server side processing (DS224+) for my movies because my streaming devices don't have that conversion capability. But given the more power provided by the DS923+ will my streaming be impacted by the lack of integrated GPU?

Thanks a million

Cheers,
Steve

Question i5 QNAP TVS-h874 Noise Level?
Posted by: QuietUser - 12-16-2023, 11:13 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

The review for the QNAP TVS-h874 includes this section about fan noise:

"I was always impressed by the cooling system on the TVS-872XT/X, but there is no avoiding that this is not exactly going to be a whisper-quiet system! Indeed, those content creators and editors in post-production that are considering this system for editing on PCIe4 Storage over 10GbE (or scaling up towards 25/40Gb on SFP or Thunderbolt) should be aware that close proximity to the device is going to be hard going!"

Since the review seems to be for the i9 version of the NAS, is the i5 version substantially quieter? I feel like I can assume it would be, although I would appreciate someone else's opinion on that, but even more so, does anyone have first-hand experience with the i5?

I have a QNAP TVS-872XT which I'm trying to replace because of a hardware problem which is no longer under warranty. I made a mistake in getting a TVS-h1688X, but that is way too loud. Even with the fans turned all the way down on the hardware settings page, it seems like there is at least one fan which is unaffected by the settings and is very loud.

The TVS-872XT was always very quiet, I just unfortunately need to replace it. (I don't care about drive noise, just fan noise.) Do you think the i5 h874 in quiet mode might have a similar noise level to the 872XT?

  RS1221+ replacement
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-16-2023, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Have you heard anything about a RS1221+ replacement? I'm surprised Synology hasn't released a RS1223+ by now. I'm assuming we will get a 1224+ next year (or at least I hope)...

Thanks!

  Seawolf Pro 20TB Formatted size
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-16-2023, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

My ST20000NT001 20TB drives were formatted NTFS on Windows 11 Pro. Task Manager reports their size as 18.2TB and Disk Management reports 18626.98 GB. Are my reported sizes correct for these 20TB drives?

Extending SHR storage pool over to a DX517 expansion unit risky?
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-16-2023, 10:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

At my home there is a DS920+ with an expansion unit. I am really satisfied with the DS920+, but i need some more storage. I have 4 slots open on the expansion unit, one slot is taken up by a single disk that serves the synology surveillance setup. I would like to expand the original pool over to the expansion unit and just add a few harddisks there, but online i can find conflicting information about how risky that would be if either the NAS or the expansion unit would stop funcioning. Would the whole pool be corrupted and unrecoverable? Or would i just be able to replace the expansion unit and continue as before?
I could ofcourse just set up a new storage volume just with disks that are located on the dx517, but that seems like a waste of space becouse of the extra redundant HDD i would need for that. I've heard you mention this quickly in one of your video's, but i cant find any deeper dive into this topic anywhere on the internet.

Thank you!

  moving data between asusutors
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-15-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I liked your Asustor vids so much now I have two, but I can't seem to move folders full of data between them
They don't see each other on the network
I don't like moving huge amounts of data between them using my PC because it slows it down to the point of being unusable, even for my 8 core processor
How can I move data more effortlessly?
Please Help!

4 Bay NAS and Plex server
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-14-2023, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a Plex Server with data on 2 external USBs, now I am planning to have a 4 bay NAS with 48TB Raid 5 based.

- My first question is whether Plex Server easily read media data hosted on NAS via ethernet cable or data drives should be directly connected to server (SATA, PCIE, USB) to Plex Server ?

- Second question is whether is there any NAS available which has network connectivity and as well as direct connectivity via USB C ?
