Best NAS setup for our business - Enquiries - 08-14-2024

Hi guys,

I'm looking for some advice. I'm researching the best NAS setup for our company, we're planning to implement this next year. We're currently using Google Drive and are editing directly from it and it has run its course. We are currently with 3 video editors that need to be able to work from the NAS at the same time (not the same files), and need to be able to access it from home. We're working with 4k 10bit footage, so I'm thinking 10gbe ports connected directly to the NAS. Is the best Multi-Video Editor NAS: QNAP TVS-h874T our way to go or is there a cheaper option for our use case? And in case I want maximum speed and a single backup, how much drives of x TB and in what kind of RAID setup would you recommend?

If you need any more info, don't hesitate to ask. Thank you so much!

The QNAP TVS-h874T is an outstanding choice for your video editing needs, particularly given your requirements for handling 4K 10-bit footage with multiple editors accessing the NAS simultaneously. Here’s why it stands out, along with some alternative options like the Synology DS1821+ and QNAP TS-973AX that might also suit your needs.

QNAP TVS-h874T - The Powerhouse:
High Performance: Equipped with Intel’s 12th Gen processors, the TVS-h874T offers exceptional power, making it ideal for running multiple 4K video streams, handling transcoding, and managing other demanding tasks. It’s built for performance and won’t bottleneck your workflow.
10GbE and Thunderbolt 4: This NAS includes built-in 10GbE ports, ensuring you have the high-speed data transfers necessary for smooth video editing. Additionally, Thunderbolt 4 support offers even faster direct connections, perfect for high-resolution footage editing.
Expandability: With PCIe slots available, you can add more 10GbE NICs or NVMe SSDs for caching, enhancing performance further and future-proofing your setup.
Storage and RAID Setup for TVS-h874T:
Drives: For a 50TB requirement, using 8 x 10TB drives in RAID 6 would be a strong configuration. This setup would yield around 48TB of usable storage after redundancy, providing a good balance of capacity and protection.
RAID 6: This RAID level is ideal for your needs, offering protection against two drive failures without sacrificing too much speed, making it suitable for video editing tasks.
Alternative Options:
Synology DS1821+:
Performance and Reliability: The DS1821+ is a solid choice with excellent performance, powered by an AMD Ryzen processor. It may not match the raw power of the TVS-h874T but is still more than capable of handling multiple 4K streams, especially with its robust Synology ecosystem.
10GbE Ready: While it doesn’t come with built-in 10GbE, you can easily add a 10GbE NIC to meet your networking needs. It’s known for its reliability and user-friendly interface, making it a great option for businesses.
QNAP TS-973AX:
Cost-Effective Performance: This model is a more budget-friendly alternative that still delivers strong performance for video editing. It includes built-in 10GbE ports and supports both SATA and NVMe drives, allowing for a versatile storage setup.
Unique Hybrid Storage: The TS-973AX offers a unique combination of 3.5" and 2.5" bays, which can be used for traditional HDDs and high-speed SSDs, providing flexibility in balancing storage capacity and performance.
Backup Strategy:
Single Backup Solution: Regardless of which NAS you choose, consider using an external NAS or cloud service for backup. QNAP’s Hybrid Backup Sync or Synology’s Active Backup offers easy-to-use solutions for securing your data.
Remote Access:
Remote Work Capabilities: With tools like QNAP’s myQNAPcloud or Synology’s QuickConnect, along with VPN setups, your team can securely access the NAS from anywhere, making collaboration seamless.
