  Plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-16-2024, 03:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, so I am in a bit of a dilemma I have the RS1221RP+ and DS1821+ my plan eventually is to move my Plex server, I want to ditch my AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16-Core Processor custom truenas build because I just like the Synology DSM and I'm trying to figure out if any of the 2 above could handle Plex, Or if there is an 8-bay rackmount solution available?

I Have a high-end 4k LG TV so the playing formats are decent it mostly plays in direct play, Acasuanly I share my server with 2-3 family friends outside the house and that's about it.

I tried searching videos and pages but can't seem to find any that show Plex stats for them, I've seen posts that say that the RS is shit but it has the same CPU as the DS and in one of the links it says that DS can work with Plex. Any chance you can confirm?

Thanks

Chris

I am looking at this case, but could not find anyone talking about it. I find this to be a very interesting product because it has a SAS/SATA backplane. do you have any experience with this case?

  Startech Dual M.2
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-16-2024, 08:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I have an Synology DS918+, thanks to your video I don't need cache.?.
I have 2 RAID 1 1Tb SSD volumes using al 4 bays, and would like to expand.
I see the 2 Startech Dual M.2 SATA-600 cases:
- https://www.startech.com/en-eu/hdd/s322m225r and
- https://www.startech.com/en-eu/hdd/25s22m2ngffr
I really would like to know if and how this works in a Synology NAS DSM6.x and/or DSM7.x in a RAID 1 setup. Would that mean you could expand the 4 bay DS918+ to a 4 volumes 1Tb Raid 1 .
Maybe you can/would like to make a video about these Dual M.2 cases and using it in a NAS(Synology/QNAP/Other)

Hello I am trying to setup my new DS224+ for first time, opted to do the full disc check and am now regretting it.. NAS has been working on this for 7 hours, stuck at 1.8gb on first 6tb drive, what should I do?  Why is it stuck?  Is this damaging the hdd?  Tks

  New NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-15-2024, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am a big fan of yours on You Tube.

I want to hire you for 1 to 2 hours of consulting.

I have a home based business. 2 people, I am a CPA in the US.

Money is not a problem.

I am utterly confused as to which NAS I want to buy. I have narrowed my choice down to:

- Synology DS 923+ (with 32GB RAM, 10GB NIC, 1.6TD cache, and 10TD SSD),

- Green 4TB Flash NAS, or

- QNAP TBS-H574TX.

I have two Macs and would like to back up the Macs (using Time Machine) to my NAS then back up the NAS to the cloud.

  btrfs of ext4?
Posted by: DragonSiifuNC - 09-15-2024, 05:58 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (1)

Background: I have used a DS220j with 2 WD Red 4TB HDDs for several years, but they've run out of capacity. I do primarily backups of my PC, my wife's PC, and our photos, sound, and video. The current setup uses the Synology hyper raid (SHR?) on the two drives with ext4 file system. I just replaced the 2 WD Red 4TB HDDs with 2 Seagate Ironwolf 12TB HDDs, and used the swap 1, then swap 2 method to populate the new drives. Over the next year I plan to upgrades to a DS923+, add 2 more Seagate Ironwolf 12TB HDDs, and swap to a more robust RAID (probably 5), as well as adding a 10Gbps PCIE card. I do not believe that I have configured my shared folders optimally, and am considering reworking them along with the concomitant tasks. I have been watching the Synology Setup Guides to get better guidance. In Guide #1 it is stated that btrfs is a better file system than ext4, and that ext4 may be deprecated soon.

My question is, should I wipe my new Ironwolf HDDs and rebuild the volume using btrfs before I optimize the folder structure? Is btrfs THAT much better than ext4 to warrant that extra work, time, and risk? Does my planned upgrade path give any support for going with btrfs over ext4?

Thank you!

  DS220j mounting bracket
Posted by: DragonSiifuNC - 09-15-2024, 05:38 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (1)

I have a DS220j and recently replaced 2 WD Red 4TB HDD with 2 Seagate Ironwolf 12TB HDD. My challenge is that the Seagate HDDs do not have that middle screw hole in the sides, and I cannot for the life of me find the L-bracket that came with my DS220j that is needed to anchor the HDDs. I cannot find them on eBay. Does ANYone know where I can obtain that L-shaped bracket and mounting screws so I can secure my new HDDs? Or, perhaps have one I can purchase? TIA.

  update to TS-453Bmini
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-15-2024, 05:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Robbie,

...by way of introduction, I'm think you're the Robbie (from span.com) who sold me a TS-435Bmini in 2017. I also got 4x8TB WD Red drives and a TR-004 NAS expansion (to put the 4TB drives I had from my earlier NAS (I think a TS-410) as a backup.

I like the 453Bmini but it keeps rattling and I have to regularly whack it on the top to stop it and, after 7 Years, I've had enough of it. Btw, is this a common issue - do you know how to permanently fix it - i've tried many things from foam pads to weights, etc.

Regardless after 7 Years, my drive is filling up I need to upgrade the drives and I was wondering what my drive and/or NAS upgrade options are. I do use the NAS for backups and data storage, but it needs to run Plex as well.

I've only ever had QNAP but am open to Synology and other companies if they are reliable etc.

If it helps, I use Macs at home.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts (again).

James.
PS: What happened to span.com?

  Wifi connection
Posted by: brobinson - 09-15-2024, 01:21 AM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (2)

Hi, just bought Synology DS224+, have enjoyed watching many of your videos (I hate seagulls lol) and were helpful in making my decision.  Due to space issues in basement, I don’t think I can have a “wired” connection to my router, but wondering if I can connect NAS to one of the WIFI extender pods plugged into wall upstairs (they have an Ethernet port on the underside).

Assume speed will be a factor, looking to use my NAS storing/streaming my media content locally.

Tks
