  First home NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-08-2023, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Currently 90% Apple (Mac,iPhone, ipads iOS) 10% windows. Heavily rely on photos and integration with iCloud. But mostly want to move away from iCloud/google drive/one-drive/drop box (maxed on almost all free & paying more for iCloud now). Considering 2 vs 4-bay and Synology (223 v 923+) vs QNAP 264 & 464. Don't do streaming/plex, mostly just remote/accessible file storage. And for 3-2-1, considering a two solution purchase for offsite assist? I already picked up 2 8TB SATA drives on blackfriday (seagate). And can i mix/match systems in future? Tx!

  DAS RAID Drives
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-07-2023, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello I want a DAS RAID5 soultion for storage/backup of my RAW photos. Only I will use it so I won't need a NAS. Do I need server drives for this DAS bay (for example Seagate Ironwolf?) Or jus simple Seagate Exos are enough?

Would you recommend some 4bay DAS RAID arrays?

Backup Qnap Data Volume to Truenas offsite
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-05-2023, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a TS-464 at home wich has a Data Volume to which I Copied all of my backup drives from my closet using SMB and more importantly YEARS of Photos usin HBS 3 to backup all my cloud content from skydrive, icloud, google, samsung, att, Dropbox Etc Etc

I have a server (just a PC) at my office away from home on which I can run a virtual Truenas installation with four raid drives.

What is the easiest way of automatically backing up my Qnap Volume monthly offsite. I am a new user of truenas. Thank you. Love your content.

  Cyberpower UPS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-05-2023, 09:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

After watching your video on UPS’s, I’ve decided to buy one. I have a Mac Studio and Studio display and in the next few weeks a Synology DS 923+, which I would like to protect, mainly from power outages. I’ve been living in Denmark for the last 30 years we don’t have power surges or drops, but I want to protect my investments just in case. I’ve chosen 2 Cyberpower Adaptive Sinewave models
CP1300EPFCLCD and CP1500EPFCLCD. I have a question maybe you know the answer as it’s a little confusing. In Denmark I can only buy UPS’s with either Schuko or IEC connectors and some with both. Can you use adaptors with UPS the Danish plugs are different as are the English. What does one do in this situation. I also have a desk I can move up or down can I use a short extension (2 metres) from the UPS up to my Mac Studio and Studio Display as the cables will not be long enough to reach the UPS.
You have been a great help to me over the last few weeks, so much so that I know exactly what to buy next.

  Small Video Production NAS Setup
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-05-2023, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, the production side of our company consists of myself and a director. My knowledge of NAS consists only of what I have gleaned from your great videos. The primary storage will be located at the director's home and I hope to edit from that from mine. This will consist of some 6k/BRAW and 4k Prores footage on a Mac Studio/M2/Max. We both have Gig fiber connections. Is this possible? Thank you, Allen

  Syncthing setup on QNAP ?
Posted by: David Morrow - 12-04-2023, 08:06 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (2)

I have Syncthing running on my Synology and 3 Windows computers. While I did have a few teething issues, all of the syncs are running fine now. So, I tried to introduce my QNAP NAS into the mix but it's not going anywhere. I'm sure that my folder path is correct ( /share/volume_name/sync_target_folder ). I suspect that it may be a permission issue because nothing it being written to the target folder on the QNAP including the .stfolder . But, according to various post on the Syncthing forum, no special permissions are needed on a QNAP NAS. ( On the Synology, Syncthing creates a system user and that user must be given permissions to the folders wanting to be sync'd.) I have searched the Syncthing forum for a solution but have exhausted all avenues.

Anyone setup Syncthing on a QNAP NAS that can point me in the right direction ?

Looking for advice, i have an old desktop, and a few 500gb-2tb drives. I want to learn/practice: Proxmox vs Trunas Scale. I know i can run Trunas inside of Proxmox, but do i need to? Proxmox isn't a great NAS solution, but should i go baremetal with trunas or ??

any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

  Building my first NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-04-2023, 04:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

A freelance developer working from home. Now doing manual backups of:
1. Work and important files to cloud.
2. Full PC backup (compressed) to external SSD every 2 months.

Other files and media: stored in multiple 2.5" external HDDs.

Current media server: using router's USB sharing (DLNA) with 1TB SSD.
My work PC has 4TB SSD and 64GB RAM; on 2.5GbE LAN. Using TPLink Deco BE85. The Deco and PC are in my bedroom.

Undecided whether I should build a Synology NAS. Looking at DS1522+ with 10GbE upgrade. Storage pools: 1 HDD + 1 a SSD.

The NAS will be in my bedroom, serving as: backup repository for work PC, as media and file server. Concerned over potential noise at night, disturbing sleep.

Undecided over HDDs: Seagate Ironwolf (downside: warranty starts from manufactured date, difficult customer service) vs WD Red (WDDA flagging drives as Warning after 3 years) vs Synology.
