iSCSI Setup for Synology DS118 |

I have Synology DS118 with 12 TB HDD. Using DS118 NAS as media library (Movies, TV Shows, Documentaries, etc.) to stream to TV via Nvidia Shield with Kodi app. NAS is already set up for SMB and NFS (for Kodi) and mapped to my laptop. I have a 5.45 TB library on an external HD. I would like to directly connect my DS118 to my laptop as it seems this would be the fastest way to transfer (copy) my large library to the DS118. A few questions: 1) Is it possible to set up an iSCSI on the DS118 (which only has 1 ethernet port)? If possible, would I have to setup iSCSI again when I disconnect from laptop and put DS118 back on the router...then, at some point, directly connect back to laptop to transfer (copy) future large amounts of data?

Synology SHR adding drives DS920+ and expanding volume |

Seasonal Greetings
I have a DS920+, with 3 x 8TB Ironwolf's. I am starting to fill it faster than I thought I would. My current load will not fit on only 2x8 drives (7.8 TB 55% used). If I add a 20TB drive, I know I will only get 8TB of it, but if later I remove one of the 8TB drives, then add another 20TB drive, can I expand the volume to use the full 20TB (resulting in 32tb - the Synology raid calculator only goes to 18tb so I wonder if 20tb is even an option) Or am I stuck in the this 8TB per drive world. I do have 4TB of external SSDs which I can pull stuff off the NAS if reducing to 2 drives and then adding the 20TB drives would solve this. I have a local 14TB external HDD backup of the NAS and an off-site so I am not too worried about the risk of moving stuff to SSDs for a few days while the volume rebuilds
Hope this makes sense.
Best regards
Neale

DIY NVME NAS |

Thanks for your recent series on DIY NAS. With the recent releases of the Flashtor NVME NAS and QNAP tbs-h574tx NVME NAS, it’s exciting to see this new trend emerging.
I’m seeking your advice on a DIY solution for NVME NAS please.
i come across this motherboard that supports 6 bay NVME https://store.minisforum.com/products/minisforum-ad650i
It looks like a good solution for a DIY NVME NAS. The only downside is a 2.5GBE instead of a 10GBE. What do you think of this as a DIY solution? Would an external 10GBE adapter work with this MB? Do you know of an alternative DIY solution?
Thank you for your advice.
Cheers,
Quynh

Migration from 920+ to 1522+ or 1621+ |

Two questions with the basis that I am upgrading from a 920+ so that I can get some extra bays (bonus) and access to 10Gb ethernet.
#1 - Can I just unplug the 920+ drives and plug them into either the 1522+ or 1621+ and have it boot up or do I need to buy drives to populate the new machine and copy everything over?
#2 - Possibly answered by #1, which of the two is a better unit to consider?

Fluid RAID roundup? |

Have you ever done a comparison of the Fluid RAID offerings by the various vendors?
Having been a Drobo fanboi since 2009, I would like to know which vendors even offer something like BeyondRAID. Also, is it just for NAS, or is DAS included (like Drobo)?
Even on your general vendor roundups, it's difficult to see which vendors have it and which don't (and for which use-cases), given the variation in the terminology.
Have a great weekend!

How to recover data from a non-operable NAS disks |

My Plextor XStore NAS don’t turn on, it may be out of order.
There is no way to access the files by just connecting the disks to the computer. I can't try replacing the device itself - there is no similar device available.
How to extract data from hard disks after the NAS device broke down, from an inoperable disk array? (I hope that all drives are working and my data is still there)
Is there any well-tested data recovery tools for NAS solutions?

I was thinking I would get the Synology DS1522+ (5 bay) and a DS224+ (2 bay) to back up my data to (then another 224+ for offsight backup). As I looked though I can get a DS1821+ for only 50 dollars more than the 1522+ and the 224+. So what if I bought the 1821+, set up two seperate volumes and used one volume as a back up to the other volume. Would that be considered a legitimate back up? Has anyone else done this successfully?
Just for information, I have MAYBE a total of 4TB of info right now. However, I also know that once I do this I will quickly triple that amount or more. This is also for home use and if I lose a day or two of using the data it isn't a big deal. It's photos, wifes sewing patterns, etc.

Thank You.

Connecting NAS to network |

I love your youtube channel and have leaned much from it. Thank you for that.
I have a computer with one 2.5G RJ45 port and I recently purchased a QNAP TS-464 NAS which has two 2.5G rj45 ports , I also have an ASUS GT-AX11000 Router with one 2.5G port one WAN port and four 1G ports. I am wondering what the best way to connect the Computer and NAS to my router so I will have the fastest transfer speeds from computer to NAS and still be able connect to the internet.
I was thinking of connecting the 2.5G computer port to one 2.5G NAS port then the other 2.5G NAS port to the 2.5G router port but wasn't sure if my computer would be able to access the internet connected in that way.
What is your advise?

nas media server recommendation |

Hi,
I've been looking around another but it has been hard to find a server that is secure and capable.
I intend to use the server as a backup for private photos, documents and video.
The second part of the server is intended to use as a media server (streaming to a home cinema 4k and flac music) and stream to tablets, phones on the go or from friends wifi.
I'm relatively tech savvy but I don't have much spare time, been looking at qnap 464 but hesitant due to the security issues recently and looking for one perhaps more future prof. The higher price stuff all seem to lack the transcoding options and seem to be a waste of money for my uses
Looked at senoligy but they seem to lack hardware transcoding.
Is there anything on the market for the above? Opening the server to the web for video stream makes it possible for hacks but must have the private stuff backed up and secure.
I'm prepared to wait for 2024 releases if necessary.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
