  Beginners Guide to 10GBE Upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-27-2023, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

You wrote in your guide that only the switch needs to be upgraded not the router. Don't you need the router also for local adress translation? And isn't all the home traffic run through the router? And wouldn't consequently keeping the old router create a bottleneck in the home lan?

i need a nas for a small business and don't yet understand what would be best
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-27-2023, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

i am looking for a recommendation on a nas for a small print shop. the editing station loads the print or cut file to the server than the respective station pulls the respective files. we have a network in place but need to upgrade the server system and a nas seemed like the best budget friendly option. the files are not individually that large (normally less than 1.5gb) but the boss wants longish term storage on the nas.
security and being able to assign differing levels of file access to each device is important. and the ability to monitor the server is also quite important

  10GB netswitch
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-27-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

After watching your videos i seem to have a Mountain of questions so here goes.
I’ve bought a Synology 923+, week it’s actually Christmas present (I can’t wait and you hate seagulls). I have a Mac Studio that has a 10Gbps connection, so I was thinking as an upgrade would it not be good idea to buy the 10Gbps card for my NAS along with a 10Gbps network switch. Another question is which netswitch I should buy there are so many out there. One model I have seen is a QNAP QSW-2104-2T 2-Port 10GbE RJ45 5-Port on amazon.de. Will this switch the correct type? If not could you suggest any, and do you think this would be a good upgrade?
Kind regards

  TS-262 memory upgrade?
Posted by: csabius - 11-27-2023, 01:20 PM - Forum: NAS upgrades - Replies (2)

Hello, fellow NAS enthusiasts!

I recently bought a QNAP TS-262 and started to add components to it (HDD, M2 SSDs for now).
Ever since I have opened the case I have seen that contrary to most product presentation videos (including the one on nascompares yt channel), it doesn't have the memory soldered on the MB, but it has two SODIMM slots! The first one has a pre-seated 4Gb module, with a seal so we don't mess around and lose the warranty, the other one is empty.
Now, this triggered a huge itch for me to try and add - at least - another 4Gb module to the empty slot. To be sure, I have asked QNAP tech support, who keeps saying that the specs state, that on this model the memory cannot be upgraded. On the other hand, looking at hardware info from QTS i see the following:

Tech support also told me about some conflicts (?) I may be experiencing if I add another SODIMM, although they specifically said that I will not lose warranty if I add another module...
My questions are:
1. Any of you seen this, or have experience with TS-264-2G, which has upgradable memory? I have a feeling that I've gotten a TS-264-2G motherboard on my NAS for some reason...
2. Would it be worth it to buy a memory module and install it in the NAS? If yes, which type/manufacturer?

Any comments or thoughts are much appreciated!

Regards,
csab

Painpoints when selecting an appropriate NAS and Drives
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-27-2023, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi!

Love your helpful videos! Need advice on NAS setup for Plex and media storage with 4x20TB Ironwolf Pro HDDs (ST20000NT001). Considering Synology DS923+ or QNAP TS-464-8G.

Concerns:
1. Transcoding: Unsure if DS923+ is suitable despite benchmark testing.
2. RAID 1 - SHR1 vs. SHR2: Determine the better choice.
3. 10 Gbit/s: I don't believe currently needed for my use case.
4. Plex Lifetime Pass for hardware transcoding: Will purchase.
5. HDD compatibility: Conflicting info on 18 & 20TB compatibility with DS923+.
6. Noise: I have a suitable location for the NAS so noise is not an issue.
7. RAM: Minimum 8GB; plan to upgrade is there any product you specifically recommend depending ont he model I select

Notes:
- Usage: Youtube footage will be storage only. I work off my PC's project drive to edit.

compatible video output devices - Terramaster vs Synology
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-26-2023, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I've seen that synology has a compatibility list and doesn't have amazon firesticks and such. Does terramaster support many devices for video out?

Ideal set up for Video Editing, video sharing, photo editing and plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-26-2023, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Firstly, thank you for the videos on youtube, they have helped me understand a little more.
My question is, I have a TS664 and a TS251, I have 2 SSD in the TS664, 1 x 256GB, 1 2TB, I am also going to install 3x16GB (RAID 5) also to start. This will be my main storage and work station. I would the like to give my TS251 with 2x 4gb (Mirrored) drives to my video editor.

What I would like to do is have the 256gb as apps and containers for my plex server, 2TB as a read cache and then the 3xHDD as main storage for my photos, videos and movies/tv/music for plex. At night the videos to edit would then sync remotely to my editor where he could then download the proxies and work on a job and re-upload them to his TS251 which would then sync back to me.

Firstly is this possible, 2nd is the configuration correct? Should I have the SSDs in a particular volume?

Apologies I am quite new to this and only ever used my NAS for basic storage.

Thank you,
Michael

  NAS needs

I sometimes work with a remote video editor. It's not an incredible amount of data. 10TB maximum per project, then they get shelved. I would like to setup a system where my editor automatically has what ever I offload. I don't care if it is the newest, just want it to work.

I am working off a Mac. Davinci Studio. Regular old Fiber Internet. I also own 6 4-8TB Sata SSD's.

  Upgrading hard drives
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-26-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a DS918+ currently set up as SHR1 with the four bays each populated with 2tb hard drives. I want to replace all four drives with larger cpapcity drives. Do I replace each one individually and how do i ensure that the 2tb drives can be resold without any security issues re my data`?

Best or system-kindest way to copy my old QNAP's data over to my new QNAP NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-26-2023, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hiya! 1) Mid-Sept is long gone. Is the message above these boxes still current?
2) I run a TS-889 Pro with 6x WGST 4Tb HDDs, set up in RAID-6 to yield 16Tb of storage.
3) I'm looking to get a TS-664-8G NAS populated with 6x WD Red 8Tb HDDs, configured in RAID-6 to yield 32Tb of usable storage (my budget forbids anything larger).
So to my question:
Once I've purchased the TS-664, populated it, configured to RAID-6, and connected to my 16-port passive Gbit switch (along with the older 669):
** What is the best way to copy ALL of the data on the old 8Tb NAS to the new 32Tb one? **
By best, I mean: most efficient, error-free, and most importantly, avoids overstressing either unit - especially the older NAS, whose age (and slowly increasing fan noise) has prompted this upgrade.

Bonus question: have you guys ever done a video on REPLACING FANS in an aging QNAP NAS? Would love to see one! Assuming the sound isn't the actual HDDs or the power supply unit's fan!
Thx Agarthan Smile
