I am interested in the Synology NAS for my home, but I am not sure what models to purchase. I live in a two-story house. My office is upstairs, and this is where my router and two desktop computers are. Port one of the router feeds an 8-port switch for all the equipment upstairs. Port two feeds downstairs to an 8-port switch that provides all the entertainment equipment TV, AVR-Receiver, X-Box, etc. I want to have my Movies, Music, and Photos on Plex and transcode 4K video. So I was thinking of purchasing a DS220+ or a DS720+ just for media. For upstairs, connect a DS1621+ and have two connections, one 10gbe connected directly to my editing PC for editing video and photos, a one Gbe connections for everything else. The DS1621 will be used for backups for all four PCs, running one docker container Minecraft server for my grandson, and maybe two Linux VM's. My thinking is running oneway sync for photos from 1621 to the DS220. All my main camera video files will remain on the 1621 and backed up to Back Blaze. Is this a good idea, and if so, can I get away with just purchasing DS220 over the DS720? I am open to other options. I know the QNAP QNAP TVS-672N is another option but Synology is my first choice.

Video best NAS for Photographers? |

Hi nascompares.com Team
In a video „best NAS for photographers“ you perfectly described my dream functionalities and identified the Qnap TVS 872xt as the answer.
For us 8 bay seems like overkill we wonder if it is better to buy this and partly populate (prob 4-6 HDD max) or to buy the 672 xt (cheaper, less powerful)?
Thanks for your thoughts.
Best regards
Andreas

Hi, just watched KODI v19 Matrix on a QNAP NAS - Installation Guide so one problem solved. My son works away and we are trying to cut costs, my thoughts buy a Nas and transfer some of my content so he can access via a browser on his ipad or Windows laptop.
Looking at a 2nd hand QNAP TS-453Be and then the brick wall.
Do I buy new or second hand and what are my first steps.

Replace Netgear Readynas NV +? |

Hi I'd like to replace my old Netgear ReadyNAS NV + with a new NAS that supports wireless connections. I think I would prefer SSD drives over HDD because I'd like to bring it along when we travel in our motorhome and with HDD drives I have to shut it down when we travel due to vibration, bumps and shakeing. It will serve as storage for about 2TB of photo files and 1TB for audio files for a SONOS sound system using HDMI ARC. The audio files will tend to grow slowly as will the photo files, although not quicly. we use Win laptops, ipads and smart tv and dvd devices. Possibly I would also use it to store and serve video files like movies. I would like a fairly small footprint, so a 4 bay would be sufficient. I have a background in IT and support my own small home network. GB ethernet support would be good as there are times when a hard connection is useful. Please let me know if you need any more information.
can you recommend a NAS and appropritae drives for this?
Sincerely,
James Wilkerson

TerraMaster F5-422 10GbE NAS 5-Bay? |

I am purchasing a TerraMaster F5-422 10GbE NAS 5-Bay system to use as a DAS (for both storage and editing). I can't find anything on the manufacture's site that says whether I can plug directly into my PC, or if I need a 10GbE switch, so I thought I would ask and see if you knew? I've watched several of your extremely helpful videos, and decided to go with the 5 bay model, with 4 6TB Iron Wolf HDDs (to run in RAID 5) and then purchased a 2TB Iron Wolf SSD to use for the cache. I have a motherboard with a 10GbE port that I wanted to take advantage of, so I am hopeful all of these pieces with play together nicely. (I have been using a DroboPro-FS on a 1GbE connection for the last 9 years and it's getting pretty shaky, hence the upgrade.)
Thank you in advance for any help/advice you may give, and for your incredibly detailed and informative videos and reviews!
Have a Happ(ier) New Year!

First NAS? |

I am currently using onedrive (paid subscription) and apple cloud storage services, plus my family do as well
I have also just started using plex as a way to store/view media (films/TV shows etc) and a NAS seems like the logical way to go for the whole family to use and also synch their photos too and not pay a subscription as well
Have mainly looked at synology NAS's due to the software looking easier to manage for my family and am considering a DS220J device, but not sure if I should go for a 4 bay or a 220+ device - There are too many to chose from!!!
Thanks in advance

Greetings,
I plan to buy QNAP TS-253D with two hard drives, Ironwolf 6TB and WD red 14TB. So I want to have the entire 6TB of ironwolf to be redundant with 6TB (out of 14TB) of WD red, while the rest of WD red to be in used as single storage for non critical data. Is that possible?
Thanks in advance,
Nagy.

Home NAS for Phone backup ? |

Hello all,
Apologies in advance for my poor language skill I am new to the NAS system I bought Synology 2 bay NAS DiskStation DS220j. I am about to return it after messing with it for almost one week and not able to get anywhere with this unit. It is slow even when I am trying to connect only one device to it. I am thinking to buy QNAP but again i am not sure if QNAP has all that I am looking for or at least close enough.
What I am looking for is:
1- Backup Photos automatically from my phone to NAS ( Internal and SD Card )
2- Backup all videos ( Internal and SD Card )
3- Backup all phone contacts
4- Backup SMS
5- If possible to backup the entire file system of the phone with OS ( not critical) but it will be nice even if I can't restore it
6- if restore of the phone option is not available that ok I understand but it will be very nice to have a backup and restore option ( not critical)
7- automatic sync of all data so if anything added it get uploaded to the NAS system.
8- Backup all of the docs, PFD, Excell, Books, Music, and audiobooks ( No file left behind)
9- Good support by customer service and good form support as i am a technically challenged person sometimes
10- Good speed and not slow as ** device as that is to much when i try to work with a device and it talking the entire day to do one single task
11- Simple to use and plug and play zero efforts from my side.
12- Third-party app support or options to use FTP SYNC or something else to send the data to the NAS if QNAP does not have all that I need form a NAS
13- WhatAPP Full Backup if possible Text and media
I am extremely tired of google, Samsung, dropbox changing rules, and iCloud removing my backups from the cloud so I don't want to lose my data. i have lost data because of Cloud system online and home computers so this the reason I am going NAS system
After playing with DiskStation DS220j for days and spending the entire day wasted in slow speed and stuck in loading page i am seriously considering returning this unit and move away from the Synology products line for good.
I contacted Qnap support and they suggested to me to get QNAP TS-253D or TS-251D and they suggested using Acronis true image mobile backup software
I did a test with a PC and my Tablet and it seems Acronis true image mobile does not do a full disk image it only copied my contacts, calendars, messages, photos, videos only but not the entire phone bit by bit or clone
So now you know my life story what would you guys advise as far QNAP and QNAP APPS and Software I am new so if you guy want me to read some article or manual please provide the link and i will go over them before i buy a QNAP unit
Thanks in advance
