I'm open to most any options that will get me to my storage requirements of 16TB.
I'm not opposed to shucking WD EasyStore drives to get white label WD Red drives.
For example I built the following impossible NAS for my sister:
$200 used Synology 4 bay
$100 for 2 used 8 TB WD white label drives
$120 for a brand new WD 8TB EasyStore that I shucked the drive from

First, your videos are great. i have watched a loads of them, but still have some questions on my particular case and would like someone else's opinion.
Equipment i already have.
1 x DJ212J (2012) - 2x 2tb WD Red Plus in Raid 1 - this was my 2nd NAS and thought i upgraded at the time... this has been solid for 8 years and nearly 24/7 uptime and still running - figured it was time to upgrade and stop gambling. i have no backup of this NAS. it is also at 98% capacity which doesn't help.
2x TS-453D 8GB - i just picked up 2 of these based on your videos. 4x 4tb WD Red Plus.
my original intent was to have both of the 453D with 2x 4tb in RAID 1 and use one as a backup of the other, i realize this may be overkill after i purchased. and ditch the synology all together even though it has been rock solid. just freaking slow and dated.
Q 1: would it be better to put both 453Ds as RAID 0 and have one back up the other thereby getting the speed benefits of RAID 0? this would give me 8tb i am after with just 4 disks.
Q2: or should i purchase additional drives and hook up a RAID 5 with 3x 4tb in each giving me my 8tb storage in each? if so would i be able add a 4th 4tb to the RAID configuration in the future?
Q3: if i do use both 453D's what do you think of a RAID 5 in one using 3x 4TB and the backup with just 2x 4TB in RAID 0 in the other?
Thank you so much and keep those informative videos coming. ( i do listen to your videos at 1.75x and it makes them even more entertaining)
joshua.

Replace Netgear Readynas NV +? |

Hi, I would like to replace my old Netgear Readynas NV +. I need a NAS for photo files and audio files. I will use a SONOS system for listening. I want to be able to use the NAS while I am traveling in my Motorhome so I think SSD is the way to go as HDD will not handle the bumps and vibrations. I dont really need it for video, but if PLEX would be useful for my 1TB music collection I would consider that. I think a 4 bay would be best, but maybe a 2 bay would be sufficient? What NAS would you recommend? Also, if you could recommend a SSD as well. I have looked at the compatibility lists for QNAP and Synology and there are so many drives I dont know how to choose.
Thank you,
Jim

DS218+ single hard drive copy setting and data help? |

I have a DS218+ and when I bought it I could only afford a single 6TB iron wolf NAS/RED HDD. I finally saved up for 2x 16TB iron wolf Pro NAS/RED HDD because they were cheaper on Newegg and wanted my 16TB drives to replace my original 6TB and have a backup. my other back up has been a drive on my computer that I transfer information over the internet. I plugged my new 16TB drive in the second bay and nothing happened so I tried to find the migration or setting that clones my 6TB drive to my new 16TB and can not find it or a good video off your YouTube or others. I was looking at options on my NAS and did add a drive but the 16TB is expanding on my 6TB and did not migrate or copying my old 6TB drive. I am panicking that I made a fatal error and am afraid I ruined the new 16TB drive which is expensive for me. how do I wipe my new drive that is now expandable storage to a copy of my 6TB drive on the 16TB drive then add my second 16TB drive as a backup. I do have some money if I can hire you but I know these processes can take lots of time how much would you charge to help me.
thank you for your time and thank you for all your youtube videos.

Thanks for reading and Happy New Year
I am looking for a NAS that is Windows and Linux friendly
*Android access local and Remote
Store/Stream Movies
*Heavy use and storage of Modelling Photographs for Editing
Family Photos
Typical PC/Laptop Backups
*Ease of use for remote access by family members worldwide to see pictures as well as uploading their own pictures
I am computer literate but my family members in other countries are not so much.
Best Regards David

1-Bay Synology NAS? |

I use Apple Devices - 2017 MacBook, iPhone 7, iPad, and Apple TV & Samsung TV. I also use iCloud to store my data and sync. across devices.
I want to buy a NAS to provide an additional backup for the data in iCloud, plus storage of photos currently only on a SSD (scanned from prints plus images from a digital camera) and approx 50 DVDs.
I'm not interested in streaming videos to any devices other than the Apple TV so maybe transcoding is not a problem for me.
I've been advised that Synology makes good products but I've had conflicting reports of whether Plex will run on a DS118; Synology says it won't but another company (a reseller) says it will.
I'm trying not to go to the expense of a 2-bay NAS (such as the DS218) as this almost triples the price when 2 by Ironwolf HDDs are factored in.
I understand that a 1-bay NAS doesn't have RAID1 redundancy but, as I still have iCloud and the SSD I don't think I need a 2-bay model.
If Plex won't run on a DS118, are the Synology Apps ( Video Station and Media Server) as good as Plex?
