  Quiet RAID in idle?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Greetings,

I’m looking to setup 2 8TB HDDs in a RAIDZ1 for my data files. I don’t mind any loud Read/Write or Startup noises. In fact, I find them pleasant as I find the sound a dial-up modem makes while connecting… nostalgia is most certainly the culprit.
However, I DO mind any idle sounds of any kind. Don’t want to be distracted by clicking, humming, or whining noises while just browsing the Web. This distraction would be too annoying for me in the age of the SSDs.

I currently have 1TB HDDs in a RAIDZ5 that are whisper quiet and a trusty old WD Velociraptor that only makes noise while accessing data but I know that todays larger drives are noisier.

Are there any HDDs you would recommend or settings to apply that would give me a quiet RAID1 while in idle?

Thanks in advance,
AL from California

  WD100EFAX?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

The big question is about 10TB WD red 10TB WD100EFAX!

By letter 'A' it is a strong index that WD100EFAX is a SMR Disk! - also the cache size is 256MB!!

In contrast WD writes 'above 8TB' all WD RED are PMR, CMR.

Synology lists WD100EAFX as incompatible for a RS2414RP!!!

could you clarify about WD100EFAX is SMR or TRUE PMR?

Thanks

  Replace WD NAS Drives?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi,

I currently run a Synology DS218+ with 2 x 2TB WD Red drives in a SHR configuration. A few weeks back I had the first indication of bad sectors (2) on one of the drives and again today the count has increased to 3. The NAS does not come in for fantastically hard use, being only used as a Time Machine backup device for a couple of Macs and as a Sonos Music server. The drives themselves date from a previous Synology NAS bought back in 2012.

Clearly after 8 years, I have no complaint about needing to replace the drives, but my question is with the increasing (slowly) bad sector count, how critical is is that I do so asap? Secondly, although there is no great need for extra backup, I would probably increase the drive capacities to 4TB just for future-proofing. Having been happy with the WD drives, I would likely go for the same brand again (unless you strongly recommended an alternative). Which drives would you suggest for the DS281+ Red, Red-Pro or Gold. I quite like the idea of the increased rotation speed of the Red-Pro and Gold for presumably improved performance and have found actually Gold devices to be cheaper than the Red-Pro.

I would be very interested in your thoughts.

Many thanks,

brian.

  Synology NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I have tried connecting both a Samsung T5 Portable SSD and a Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD to both front and back USB ports on a Synology DS918+ and devices are recognised. It does recognise USB pen drives that I attached and the portable SSD's work in both my laptop and my PC. Please can you give me some advice.

Regards

Dave

  Slow qnap Nas ts-251?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello,

I have an issue with my qnap ts-251 4gb ram - 3 tb that I've had for about 4 years. it feels very slow.
it takes about 10-15 secs to access the main desktop, then installing even a small app can take 5-10mins.
It seems to play Plex 4k fine, copying files to and from pc I get about 70-80mb/sec.
I have a 8 switch router 1gb/sec , a few days ago I setup a LAG setup on two ports and bonded the ports on the qnap but it didn't make any difference.

To be honest it's never been that quick, but lately it's gotten worse. Is it time to upgrade do you think?

ah btw I use the Nas for backup, videos and surveillance. the survellience records to second hard drive. the first is for apps/video/backup.

thanks alot

Paul

  Expanding memory?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello, I am using a QNAP NAS ts-421. I installed 3 4TB disks on it (RAID5). My system says my memory is almost full. If I put an extra 4TB disk in, will that solve my problem?

One other question: how to I delete files on the QNAP? Do I just delete them from the and hopefully that will solve my memory problem?

Kind regards,

Deborah
