What NAS to buy? |

Looking for a NAS mostly for fast backups of home 2 computers (1 TB each ) on network and then daily backups of any changes. Remote access would only be used rarely, could live without it. Have cat 7 and gigabit Asus RT-AC88U router (8 ports) and TP-Link gigabit switches. Media server would be used rarely as we have fire cube and pandora. Thinking of 2 bay, 6TB each? snapshots sound reasonable to have in case computer gets corrupted somehow or gets a virus. What would you suggest?
Main thing is looking for fast backups and ease of use. No gaming. Thought it would be worthwhile to spend a little bit more for the diskless NAS as I can buy WD red 6TB drives for $125 on Amazon. This would allow me to be future-proof if I want to use media server, remote access, etc later. Looking to buy something on Cyber Monday.
Thanks

Expansion Slot GPU? |

Hello, I'm wondering if it is possible to buy a cheaper QNAP unit with a Celeron processor, but that also has an expansion slot and then add a GPU to that slot. Will the PlexPass accelerated hardware feature take advantage of the GPU, thereby accomplishing superior transcoding without having to buy an i3+ processor?

I enjoy your informative youtube videos. I am contemplating on purchasing a Synology NAS on Cyber Monday. I am actively considering between Synology DS120j and Synology 220j. I only have 50 GB in files on my 4 home computers (2 desktops and 2 laptops). I would like to set up a Plex server. I would only steam to one television (1080p) and/or 1 desktop at a time. Would Synology DS120j be suficient to work as a Plex server?! I will likely converty my collection of 75 dvds into a digital format. Would Synology DS120j be suficient?

NOISE? |

Hello I want to downgrade MY Synology 3618XS that I purchase 2 years ago for 2 reasons:
-NOISE: when you add a 10GB card (what I did), you cannon set the fans in medium/low speed mode, it's full speed by default and is therefore too noisy.
-POWER: at 145 watts average, (+/-) I saw my electricity bills rise to a large extend.
I'm interested in the ds1621 but I want to be sure that the fan's won't run in full speed mode when I add my 10GB (INtel 540T2) 10Gbe Network card.
Do you have any info on this ?
Thanks

Hi
we are a small office with maximum 10 persons employee.
we want to centralized our document so that any of our employee can access the files.
we worked with Autodesk Applications and open AutoCAD-Revit etc. file directly from nas storage.
we don't need any encoding and decoding multimedia files with nas.
we just need good transfer rate that speed up saving engineering software files.
we appreciate that help us to choose right nas for our small business.
thank you

I am asking for advise on the choice of NAS to buy
1. Home set up = iMac desktop for photo editing
2. Internal HDD backed up via Time machine to a LACie 2Big doc connected via thunderbolt 3 connection
3. Photos are stored in ad Drobo 5 bay with Thunderbolt 2 connection - i edit directly from this drive. This drive is backed up the the cloud as are all my DAS to backblaze
4 I WANT TO ADD AD NAS IN THE HOUSE TO SYNC. WITH THE DROBO TO PROVIDE AN ADDITIONAL COPY OF MY PHOTOS - I WOULD CONFIGURE A 4-5. BAY DRIVE WITH DOUBLE REDUNDANCY - WHICH NAS DO YOU RECOMMEND?

Hi,
Great videos and reviews by the way! So with Google pulling unlimited photos I'm looking at options and running my own NAS to do the job myself.
At the moment my main reason is to backup our photos and videos, that's about it really. All our media we stream off services and don't hold it ourselves. The only other possible addition would be security cameras. We've looked previously but we're always put off by them being held elsewhere and susceptable to those issues.
At the moment I was looking at:
• Synology DS220+ with x2 4tb iron wolf drives
• A UPS like an APC BX1400UI (I don't know what size I'd need?! Is this too big? I don't want to be spending £300 on a UPS as well)
• a 4tb stand alone ruggedised drive to do another backup to store in another location.
What are your thoughts? Am I completely off the mark?
Thanks
Tom

Hello. Thank you for all your research on Synology (and NAS products in general). I noticed that in the Unofficial Memory Upgrade Guide, for the DS?20+ models, the Crucial 8GB links point to the 16GB parts. Do you have links or model numbers to tested 8GB Crucial modules? Thanks.

Hi
First of all I must say that you have made many fantastic reviews!
I have a question and I expect you as an expert to be able to answer it
For many years we own a 2 bay Qnap Ts212 Nas and i like to replace this Nas for a new one since this one is quite old and I have 1 disk with a sector error.
I have good experience with Qnap i like to stay with this brand.
Use: Home, 4 users, each with their own rights for the different folders.
My idea is to be ready for the future and buy a 253D-4G but...
Looking on the Qnap website they indicate for the 521+ and 251D that this is a high end prodcuct.
For the newer 253D they indicate it as a mid-range product?
To me this is quite confusing, i don't need all the options and my preference would be to buy a Nas with the best hardware that can run for years without any problem. do you know why the 253D is marked as a midrange product?
For the HD I'm thinking to buy 2x Iron Wolf 6Tb, running in raid 1
(currently I have 2x 2 Tb Baracuda in raid 1. Next to that a USB backup drive where 1x a week the selected forders are copied to.
Can you say something about the TS251D vs TS253D with your experience and what the pluses and minuses could be.
Thanks in advance .
Kind regards,
Rene Meulenkamp
