  Hybrid NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-04-2026, 01:24 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I have a DS220+ and will probably have to build my NAS but wanted to put a feeler out. Thanks for being here. Very kind. I have interest in something more robust than the Zima2. Something with pcie lanes I can use with M.2 and Sata capabilities. The reason for the pcie is to have flexibility, with the use case emerging from what kind of connection to ethernet I have. I'd like the ability for my computer to talk with the NAS at 10g ethernet speeds. If the NAS comes with that option than the pcie will be used for say a nvme expansion card or u.2. I have an Epyc system with 2x3090 and as you might guess I am learning about local LLM development mainly persistent memory hence the desire for large amounts of storage. I'd like it to kind of be like a library for the LLM, but also have my own storage partitioned out. Probably TMI but thanks for reading. Looking forward to your reply.

  NVME NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-04-2026, 01:24 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I’ve been looking for my own NAS for a while, mainly to back up my iPhone photos and keep documents in the cloud so I can access them from any device.

I previously had a DIY setup (N100 board + 4×2.5" SSDs). It was cool, but too big. Now I want something very compact that I can mount under my desk (if temps allow) or place on my desk if it looks good (e.g., Aiffro K100 / Mac mini style).

Requirements: an NVMe NAS with at least 3/4+ slots. Extra 2.5" bays would be fine (e.g., Lincstation). It should be very compact and use as little power as possible. Usage will be mostly cloud/remote, not primarily via a LAN cable.

I’ve had my eye on CWWK, but now there are many NVMe NAS options and I’ve lost track. UGREEN looks interesting (especially the OS), but power consumption matters to me. TerraMaster is also an option as a more established brand.

OS isn’t critical; I’m considering Xpenology or ZimaOS. Xpenology is appealing because of SHR, since I’m not very familiar with RAID.

  Asustor AS5404T
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-04-2026, 01:24 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, hope your having a good day, I've just purchased this system, my first foray into the nas world. After watching your Asustor nas beginners series I am still unsure if I should purchase nvme's for storing the operating system and apps, instead of loading them onto one of the 8Tb hd. This nas will not be used for anything other than a media player (I have just shy of 20Tb), that I will access from various places and devices. I know I'll need Plex Or Jellyfin and think I will use a raid 5 setting. I would like your opinion on getting the most out of my storage while having at least 1 drive for redundancy.
Thank you.
David.

  Upgrading from a QNAP-453E
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-04-2026, 01:24 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a QNAP TS-453E (8GB RAM, 2*16TB + 2*8TB HDDs all in one RAID5, no SSD) that's pretty much full, so I'm wondering what's the best upgrade path? Do I replace the 2*8TB HDDs with 2*16TB? Or do I look at a new enclosure?
It's primarily used as our Plex server but also holds backups of my Mac machines and photographs, hence why it's almost out of space. Adding larger HDDs seems like the obvious next step but is the TL-D800C storage enclosure a viable route? I have a few spare 4TB HDDs that I could throw in it, and depending what I store there it wouldn't need to be RAID5.

  QuMagie Question
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-04-2026, 01:24 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm looking to setup my QNAP for photo management used by my wife and I. I have three user accounts setup. 1 is an admin for local only. the other 2 are user accounts for my wife and I. QuMagie on IOS requires only local access or using myqnapcloud account. The only account that has a myqnapcloud account is the admin account I created. Should I create one for each user account as well?

  F2 425 Plus memory upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-04-2026, 01:24 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

After a previous question and a bit of a debate I've purchased a Terramaster F2 425 Plus to replace my older Synology.
Generally happy with it but TOS 6 was vary flaky, with even snapshot failing to work reliably, so I've switched to True NAS. Which, so far, seems much more reliable but its using a lot of memory.
The official Terra-master memory prices seems way to high so I'm looking to replace the module with crucial or similar so struggling to find more detailed specs of exactly what is required.

Should this work?

  Build a TrueNas Server
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-04-2026, 01:24 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I am looking to build a future proof Truenas home NAS server. The usecase is to backup files/ Photo's, run some VM's, use my own Olama LLM models. After doing some research and checking with ChatGPT, I am looking to go for:

Jonsbo N6 Case (already purchased and on the way)
ASRock Rack W680D4U-2L2T/G5
Intel Core i5-14500
2× 32GB DDR5-4800 ECC UDIMM (64GB)
2× 1TB NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen4)
4× 10TB NAS HDDs
RTX 4060 Ti 16GB (GPU)
850W 80+ Gold ATX
Noctua NH-U12S redux

Just wanted to get your views on the above as I have been following your channel for a few months. Anything better than this motherboard?

Thanks!
Mano

  Board recommendations
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-04-2026, 01:24 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello boys,

I’m just interested in a board recommendation, preferably that it’s got a socketed processor, three SSD slots, and at least eight data ports. I was considering the CWWK Q670-8Bay NAS Mini ITX motherboard, but reviews on their site seem to be lacking.

I’d prefer four RAM slots too, Intel over AMD, but I’m not locked in. Just looking for long-term and decent power as I've been using an CWWK N355 and it’s a bit gutless, sadly.

Regards John

and happy new year

  Minisforum N5 Pro Issues
Posted by: andell - 01-04-2026, 12:56 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey all,

Unfortunately, the forum simply refuses to send me an activation email despite my attempts, so I can only create a new thread and cannot reply to the existing one by rayven1lk. I also wanted to raise the same issue with the N5 Pro as rayven1lk did, as it appears to be quite serious.

Users across both the Reddit and Level1Techs threads have been consistently reporting data corruption on their spinning disks (not NVMe) as a result of what is likely a faulty SATA controller. The Reddit thread was initially opened a month ago, and additional reports continue to come in even to this day.

I, like Rayven, am not allowed to post URLs, so here are some broken URLs with a space in them so that you can quickly find the relevant threads:

PHP Code:
https://www[.]reddit[.]com/r/MINISFORUM/comments/1pbnql6/silent_data_corruption_on_n5_pro_nas/
https://forum[.]level1techs[.]com/t/aoostar-wtr-max-vs-minisforum-n5-pro/236285/2

While MINISFORUM appears to be aware of the issue based on the comments in that thread and discussion in their discord server, the lack of any public statement or even a reply on the reddit thread is deeply concerning; it has now been over a month since the original Reddit thread began and zero clarification has been provided.

Given the overwhelmingly positive reviews of the N5 Pro online, including coverage, even very recent coverage, from the NASCompares Youtube Channel, it's likely that many users are continuing to purchase N5 Pro units (e.g., with holiday gift money) despite the fact that they may all be defective. Especially for nontechnical users, this might mean irreplaceable data is subject to corruption.

If you are able to replicate the results of the various reports on Reddit/Lv1Techs--or even if your unit cannot replicate it--I think it is very important to make a public announcement or video to bring awareness of the issue. This is both (1) to ensure that people who already have a unit, potentially on the channel's recommendation, take proper precautions to ensure the safety of their important data rather than trusting what may be a faulty unit; and (2) to help push MINISFORUM to take the issue more seriously than they appear to be doing right now.

Either way, I love your videos and have fun at CES!
