  DVA Series
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-21-2025, 01:15 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I’ve been asked to “take a look” at the tech at my parent’s apartment and connected rental unit, which means adding ~10 cameras to the property, building out a local plex server, and I’d like to get everyone off paid cloud services instead of just me. Synology sounds like it would be the move.

Just focusing on the cameras, the DVA series looks ancient. Synology doesn't even advertise the 3221 anymore. I need more than 2“deep learning video analytics” and 2 bays of the 1622, and the 3221 hasn’t been updated in almost 5 years. If I want to go with Synology, do you have any insights on what they are planning to do with the DVA series? Maybe "Synology AI" will do the analytics for the RS systems or DS 1825+ series? Should I only look at cameras that do AI on the camera itself? Do I really need to consider a $10,000 rack mounted option to get all of my goals completed?

Thank you,
John

  Synology 425+
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-21-2025, 01:15 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I got an open box deal on a Synology 425+ for $360. This is my first NAS and I was wondering if a spare 8GB DDR4 can be used to expand memory. The Intel J4125 processor says it can be expanded to 32GB. Am I in safe territory using this to expand my memory?

Synology NAS slows down when accessing remotely after DSM update – Please help check
Posted by: earthworm - 11-20-2025, 07:01 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi everyone,

I have a problem with my Synology NAS after updating to the latest DSM version. When accessing remotely using QuickConnect or connecting via DDNS, the download speed drops sharply, only about 2–3 MB/s, even though my connection is stable.

Some information I have checked:

NAS uses Synology DS920+

DSM just updated the new version last week

Internal LAN connection is still fast

Tried changing the port but the remote speed still drops

No CPU or RAM warning appears

I want to ask:

Has anyone experienced a slow NAS after updating DSM?

Is there a setting in the new DSM that limits the external connection speed?

Should I rollback to the previous DSM version, or is there any optimization method before doing this step?

I hope someone with experience can share more. I want to handle it thoroughly because the NAS serves daily work.

Thanks everyone.

  Qnap TS 264 optimal setup
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-14-2025, 02:52 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

After months of watching your advice I just bought a TS 264 for basic home use. I am going to set it up mainly as a VM (linux and mac), cloud storage and small web server, and backup.
Do I need seperate volumes for this?
What configuration to you advice?
I know this is a very elementary question but will greatly appreciate if you can direct me in the right direction to start.
Best wishes.

  32GB RAM for TS453D
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-14-2025, 02:52 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey boss,

Long time reader and watcher... Love your stuff.. Smile

I am in a slight pickle... I really need some help finding old ram for my NAS... DDR4 16GB that will suit my NAS.

I bought some RAM (Crucial) - and it did not work... it did like your first example video where you tried to stick in a 32 GB stick.....
I rolled back and thankfully, the old RAM was fine. I lost 25% restock fee Sad

I think I just need to get a hold of some RAM as you describe in one of your videos..... I think it's down to having sticks of RAM SODIMM 16GB even 3200 where the chips are only on one side..

Anyway... I really want to upgrade.. I hope I can ask you how to buy, if you have some - happy to pay shipping to the colonies...... i currently have the 8GB variety..... with the celeron processor deal... Been running mine for years.. has been great (3 years.. just recently upgraded to what I would consider massive 18TiB drives...) - RAID 5 - so about 50 TB..

Anyway.. please help.. I love your channel..

  Synology DSM 7.2 and 2025 Plus NAS's
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-14-2025, 02:52 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

With the inconsistent drive policy from Synology, I'm torn between buying a Synology Plus Series NAS and building my own from scratch. I already purchased 4 14TB HGST WD Ultrastar DC HC530 14TB SATA 6Gb/s 3.5-Inch Data Center HDD. Are they going to work ok in a 2025 Plus series NAS?
Thank you in advance for any assistance rendered,
Tom

  Which NAS and harddrives?
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-14-2025, 02:52 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I am looking at setting up a NAS for home use. My primary use for large amounts of storage is a photography hobby, as well as random important files/backups of my desktop. I currently have ~3-4tb of data on external harddrives that I would like to copy over to a NAS and also have room for future growth.

My questions are regarding which NAS to purchase, and which harddrives (brand and size) would you recommend? Online research is leading me towards either the UNAS 4 or DS423. I have concerns about Synology and acceptance of nonproprietary HDDs. Budget is flexible if you think a 6 or 8 bay NAS would be a better option, or is this overkill for the amount of space I might need? Thank you for your help!

Great article. What if not Synology?
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-14-2025, 02:52 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I've only had one NAS in the past 14 years. Synology DS212j. Both 2TB disks have been replaced once in that time.
I stopped updating the OS many years ago when one of the updates temporarily bricked it.
I used to experiment with hosting web site, music server etc, but it seemed to slow to a crawl for file access after that and even when I removed these services, never sped up.
Then last year the connection to the NAS by MacOS suddenly disconnected every time the MacBook would go to standby which has been annoying, but presumably that is a MacOS update that is responsible.
So I want a new, fast NAS, probably mainly for file access and phone photo backup. One that "just works" and works seamlessly with MacOS, Windows, occasionally Linux, iOS and Android.
It would be nice if it offered other services like media server, computer backup, web/FTP server etc, but as long as it does a reliable job serving files, that's the main thing. What do you suggest?
