Decision paralysis - buying Hard Drives |

Hi all.
I've finally got around to starting the process of setting up a NAS for media streaming and general file storage. Obviously I'm now spending 16+ hours a day watching YT videos about NASs which tend to contradict each other...
I think I've decided on a DS923+ on which I plan to run Plex etc. I already use Home Assistant, so it'd be nice to get them to play nice.
My big issue right now is buying hard drives - probably 2 to start with.. maybe 3.
I've come across the whole "dodgy Seagate drives" situation and it's causing me decision paralysis.
It would seem logical that other drive manufacturers are also affected - it's just harder to diagnose.
Official retailers seem to be selling these dodgy drives as well as Amazon/Ebay etc.
Does anyone have any advice about where to buy new Seagate drives? At least Amazon doesn't argue about returns (generally).
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Thanks for giving this point of contact it's greatly appreciated.
I have watch a insane number or videos on YouTube and read a bit online but I'm still feeling like I don't know where to start. I'm looking to build a home NAS to store my videos and photos that I take and edit on (hobby photographer). I would also like it to have enough power to run a Plex server and be future proof in case I want to run something like home assistant etc on it.
I think I have settled on the Jonsbo N3 case but I am open to suggestions. I would like 2.5gbe on it at least so it won't take too long sending data to and from it and even give me the ability to edit photos/videos directly off it with a drive for cache. I have built PC's in the past but a long time ago, and the build process isn't an issue for me, it's deciding on what motherboard, PSU etc to get that is the challenge.
Ideally I don't want a cheap Chinese PSU and I want something quite energy efficient and hopefully quiet.

Asustor running NextCloud |

I Team.
Watched all your videos on Asustor nas and finally got my self a Asustor lockerstore 2 / AS6602t
I changed the nas port form 8000 to 81 for http connections and port 8001 to port 444 for https connections and Enabled Automatic change HTTP connections to HTTPS Connections.
I installed NextCloud on the nas and enabled EZ-Connect.
NextCloud runs under port : 32680
I can login to my nas remotely but keep getting the certificate error when browsing to my external nas url.
Does the certificate only work on port 443 ?
Or I'm I doing something wrong perhaps ?
I would like to use NextCloud as a file share to 7 users using then NextCloud Files option but at this point I cant secure the https connection with EZ-connect.
Thanks for all the informative videos. You helped me allot in understanding how a Nas works with your great videos on Youtube.
Thank you in Advance
Kind Regards

Hello dear Team,
I want to ask, if you ever tried to store games on a network storage.
I'm currently thinking about building a new network in my house and want to invest a bit in the future, so I don't need to update everything again in some years.
My idea was to install cables with at least 10G or more (CAT 8 or Fiber, as they are already costs the same). Then I just need to update the hardware like router and switches/ network storages, when there are faster solutions.
But for now, I was thinking about the UGREEN DXP4800 Plus to store my games, images ect. on it. It has a 10G port, so my plan is to connect it to a TP-Link BE800 via a 10G connection.
Now the question is:
Is it possible to use the NAS as an "external" storage and store the games there, to play them directly via WIFI or LAN on a handheld device or a laptop. The NAS should not do the CPU or GPU tasks. It should just store the files.
Can WIFI-7 / 10G handle this or am I'm thinking wrong?

Hey there. I want to make a NAS from one of the Jonbo N4 or N5 cases. I will need a bit of space because I want a few key things. I would like to be able to expand my storage down the line. I would also like a 10 gigabyte network port. I would like to have a descent/power efficient GPU as I would like to run an LLM off my NAS and would like to use it to run my Jellyfin server. I would really like it to have a bit of power so I can run I good amount of docker containers on it. My question is what case/motherboard/CPU/GPU do you recommend.
Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it. I have no clue what I’m doing.

Which NAS for 4K RAW video? |

hey guys, I wanted to know which NAS you thought was better for video editing.
I was looking at QNAP NAS TVS 872-XT or the TerraMaster T12-500 Pro.
The extra disk space on the TerraMaster is kinda appealing as most projects are around 1 - 2TB worth of Media. But i'm worried about the over all speed of the T12-500 Pro compared to the QNAP. However the QNAP is around 1000GBP more to by. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks so much and keep up the amazing work!

Hi Robbie, great videos ! I'm new to NAS but settled on QNAP 464 so i can create a media server, photos and music along with normal back up for my other stuff. What Im not clear about (even after watching your video on the subject) is what is the best op sys to load. I know you suggested a celeron is too weak to handle ZFS but then why is QNAP offering it for my model -- thankfully i was able to increase the RAM. Im hoping you can provide the proper direction I should move in -- and yes i will want to use Plex or Jelly fin and will set up on internet so my family can access movies and photos. Thanks in advance! Glenn Kopriva

Hi
Followed the guide and everything seemed to wrok great. Package running, rebooted NAS. All good.
But Network Interface says my speed is still 1000mbps.
Using front port on DS920+ File transfer speed tops out at around 114mb/s.
I can access the NAS no problem via the WavLink - it's the only network connection after I pulled the two ethernet cables.
I'm connected via network switch but all my equipment is 1000gpbs.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
