  Hybrid NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-04-2026, 01:24 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I have a DS220+ and will probably have to build my NAS but wanted to put a feeler out. Thanks for being here. Very kind. I have interest in something more robust than the Zima2. Something with pcie lanes I can use with M.2 and Sata capabilities. The reason for the pcie is to have flexibility, with the use case emerging from what kind of connection to ethernet I have. I'd like the ability for my computer to talk with the NAS at 10g ethernet speeds. If the NAS comes with that option than the pcie will be used for say a nvme expansion card or u.2. I have an Epyc system with 2x3090 and as you might guess I am learning about local LLM development mainly persistent memory hence the desire for large amounts of storage. I'd like it to kind of be like a library for the LLM, but also have my own storage partitioned out. Probably TMI but thanks for reading. Looking forward to your reply.

  NVME NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-04-2026, 01:24 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I’ve been looking for my own NAS for a while, mainly to back up my iPhone photos and keep documents in the cloud so I can access them from any device.

I previously had a DIY setup (N100 board + 4×2.5" SSDs). It was cool, but too big. Now I want something very compact that I can mount under my desk (if temps allow) or place on my desk if it looks good (e.g., Aiffro K100 / Mac mini style).

Requirements: an NVMe NAS with at least 3/4+ slots. Extra 2.5" bays would be fine (e.g., Lincstation). It should be very compact and use as little power as possible. Usage will be mostly cloud/remote, not primarily via a LAN cable.

I’ve had my eye on CWWK, but now there are many NVMe NAS options and I’ve lost track. UGREEN looks interesting (especially the OS), but power consumption matters to me. TerraMaster is also an option as a more established brand.

OS isn’t critical; I’m considering Xpenology or ZimaOS. Xpenology is appealing because of SHR, since I’m not very familiar with RAID.

  Asustor AS5404T
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-04-2026, 01:24 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, hope your having a good day, I've just purchased this system, my first foray into the nas world. After watching your Asustor nas beginners series I am still unsure if I should purchase nvme's for storing the operating system and apps, instead of loading them onto one of the 8Tb hd. This nas will not be used for anything other than a media player (I have just shy of 20Tb), that I will access from various places and devices. I know I'll need Plex Or Jellyfin and think I will use a raid 5 setting. I would like your opinion on getting the most out of my storage while having at least 1 drive for redundancy.
Thank you.
David.

  Minisforum N5 Pro Issues
Posted by: andell - 01-04-2026, 12:56 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hey all,

Unfortunately, the forum simply refuses to send me an activation email despite my attempts, so I can only create a new thread and cannot reply to the existing one by rayven1lk. I also wanted to raise the same issue with the N5 Pro as rayven1lk did, as it appears to be quite serious.

Users across both the Reddit and Level1Techs threads have been consistently reporting data corruption on their spinning disks (not NVMe) as a result of what is likely a faulty SATA controller. The Reddit thread was initially opened a month ago, and additional reports continue to come in even to this day.

I, like Rayven, am not allowed to post URLs, so here are some broken URLs with a space in them so that you can quickly find the relevant threads:

PHP Code:
https://www[.]reddit[.]com/r/MINISFORUM/comments/1pbnql6/silent_data_corruption_on_n5_pro_nas/
https://forum[.]level1techs[.]com/t/aoostar-wtr-max-vs-minisforum-n5-pro/236285/2

While MINISFORUM appears to be aware of the issue based on the comments in that thread and discussion in their discord server, the lack of any public statement or even a reply on the reddit thread is deeply concerning; it has now been over a month since the original Reddit thread began and zero clarification has been provided.

Given the overwhelmingly positive reviews of the N5 Pro online, including coverage, even very recent coverage, from the NASCompares Youtube Channel, it's likely that many users are continuing to purchase N5 Pro units (e.g., with holiday gift money) despite the fact that they may all be defective. Especially for nontechnical users, this might mean irreplaceable data is subject to corruption.

If you are able to replicate the results of the various reports on Reddit/Lv1Techs--or even if your unit cannot replicate it--I think it is very important to make a public announcement or video to bring awareness of the issue. This is both (1) to ensure that people who already have a unit, potentially on the channel's recommendation, take proper precautions to ensure the safety of their important data rather than trusting what may be a faulty unit; and (2) to help push MINISFORUM to take the issue more seriously than they appear to be doing right now.

Either way, I love your videos and have fun at CES!

  Minisforum N5 Pro - JMB585 Controller
Posted by: rayven1lk - 12-31-2025, 06:51 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys, I came across your review of the Minisforum N5 Pro and was so excited to research this NAS which is more of an "All-in-one" server. Unfortunately, while I was looking into it, it seems there is a potentially serious reliability issue with the N5 Pro related to its onboard SATA controller (JMB585). Multiple users have reported that under sustained write or mixed I/O load, the controller appears to reset or reinitialize mid-operation. When this happens, ZFS ends up receiving corrupted data before checksums are written, which results in silent data corruption on the pool. Once ZFS later reads the data back, the checksum mismatch is detected — but at that point the corruption has already been committed.

Unfortunately, I cannot share links here, but if you lookup:
1) (Silent) Data Corruption on N5 Pro NAS: r/MINISFORUM
2) AOOSTAR WTR Max vs Minisforum N5 Pro: Level1techs forum

These threads describe the issue and show some logs that cover the issue. The Level1Techs thread has a few posts where the controller is described as unreliable under heavy I/O loads. What’s concerning is that this doesn’t appear to be a one-off drive failure — symptoms are consistent with controller-level resets, hitting all drives at once.
I’m not sure how widespread the problem is, but Minisforum hasn’t issued an official response yet. That uncertainty makes it hard to trust the N5 Pro as a primary NAS, which is a shame considering how strong the rest of the hardware is and how well it was positioned as an “all-in-one” homelab box.

Not sure if you're already aware of this issue, but would love it if you could raise this with Minisforum and see if they can acknowledge the issue or outline any planned fixes — firmware, board revision, etc. It would help a lot of people (including myself) make informed decisions. Thanks.

TL;DR:

Quote:N5 Pro’s JMB585 SATA controller may reset under load → corrupts in-flight writes → ZFS only catches it after corruption is written. Until Minisforum responds, data-integrity-focused users are hesitant to trust it as a NAS.

Best Practices/Arch - Home Network, serving Home and Small Business
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-22-2025, 07:28 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

My hardware -- Synology RT6600ax, Synology DS1522+ (43.6 TB, Synology Hybrid RAID SHR, 1 storage pool, 2 volumes - ~22.5 TB business/~12 TB home), tp-link TL-SG-108E 8-port Gigabit smart switch.
1G ISP.
Need reliable/secure network that can serve home needs as well as needs of a small home engineering/PR business (home/business preferable segregated, but both accessible for some home users).
Is there a white-paper or other docs/sources that describes "best-practice" architectures for this type use-case?
Thanks

Safe and cool transportation for editing in a trailer/caravan
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-22-2025, 07:28 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

A UGreen DXP6800 system will be used for editing a low-budget 7-part streaming series inside a small trailer/caravan. Complications:
- Need to transport NAS + battery + Apple Studio
- Cannot put the any of these 3 items in the trailer – need to be outside the trailer with cables fed inside
- We are in rural northern New Mexico with many rough dirt roads; hauling trailer with a Honda CR-V
Request: An affordable solution to safely transport the NAS system + Studio + battery without being smashed to bits by rough terrain and that will keep the NAS cool in hot New Mexico weather
Thus, a “cushioned” means of transportation that also allows for cooling to avoid overheating.
We considered a cooler with freezable inserts (not actual ice), but: a) concerned about condensation, b) would not allow for venting unless you leave it open or punch a hole in it, which would prevent cooling

Hey there! I have a bit of a monster JBOD system I would like to turn into a single solution longterm plex server. I have spoken to many many "experts" over the last year in preperation for this and even when talking to Synology's own customer service I feel like nobody knows what they are talking about. That is why I really need the expertise of someone who does.

I have 125TB currently so room for growth is ideal but not a priority. I did this sort of backwards by collecting every movie I figured I would need and then transferring the disc to an ever growing number of usb HDDs. I would like to have it all on one location for streaming in house and when on the go. The media is mixed but will include 4K

I realize my list of options are fewer at this storage size but the differences in cost can be thousands and I dont want to have any kind of buyers remorse. Which system do you think would be best?

Hello, my daughter is autistic, so I have been saving up for a reliable system for her home movies , pictures and Music. I want to have icons on her TV that show either home movies or pictures or music . In fact she has an Ipad and she will have the same icon layout on her ipad! I read that PLEX is the way to do this and have heard so many great things about Unifi equipment. But I have been told that PLEX is not supported that well on the Unifi NAS. is this true or now. What would be your best recoomendation?
thnaks
