  TBS-h574tx
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-03-2025, 04:44 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

After reading your response, I'm going to go with the tbs-h574tx with 5x samsung 990 pro 4tb nvmes in raid z1 and swap the fans for Noctuas. A self built jonsbo n2 or more likely n3 seems a bit challenging to reach the same or better levels of storage, power usage, network connectivity, and ultra quiet cooling. My only real question is that in your response you mentioned that the ram was upgradable to 32gb for the tbs-h574tx. Everything I've read(including your initial review) said the ram is soldered and is 12gb for the i3 model and 16gb for the i5 model. I read that to use all of the features of QuTS, I'll need a minimum of 16 gb of ram. At this point, I'm just planning to get the i5 model, but just wanted to make sure the ram wasn't actually upgradable, and that 16gb is enough to handle dockers for qbitorrent, radarr, sonarr, plex, and maybe a VPN and a couple(literally) extra containers? Thanks again for all the advice.

I would really like some advice on my first NAS - I am focussed on redundancy and data integrity (to prevent bit rot etc). Storage would be for a variety of file types, with an emphasis on music files - I have a large flac colleciton from Bandcamp and CD rips.

Therefore I would be interested in streaming this music from the NAS and would be backing it up to a hard drive as well.

There are so many options, so would really appreciate advice on number of drives, storage format and RAID options.

Many thanks,

James

  N305 vs N355
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-03-2025, 04:44 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

G'day Mate!

Love your vids. I'm in the final stages of spec'ing a power efficient home NAS, that is mostly storage, but will run PROXMOX with a few containers. Home Assistant, and likely Jellyfin (but with likely only one or two users, infrequently, and not transcoding. Also possibly Frigate NBR, but with an M.2 Google Coral or an M.2 Hailo-8 processor passed thru from PROXMOX to Frigate NVR to save the CPU on inference processing.

Long story short, I really like the recent latest CWWM M/ITS (white 8 port, 10Gbe mobo with the N305 or N355, and I was after advice as to if you think the small additional performance of the N355 is worth the extra AUD $50-60 dollaroos they want for it.

Cheers, CMG.

  First home NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-03-2025, 04:44 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm looking at building my own first NAS. Nice and compact but home built to keep cosy down but also for the fun factor. Main use he back up from PCs and Plex, with option to sue home assistant in future.

Im thinking jonsbo N2 with a N100/N150/N305 topton board 16gb of ram (maybe 32gb), reputable brand PSU of 450 watt.

Storage I'm not sure looking for around 20-30tb as think that's more than I need but allowing headroom. Probs use ironwolf drives and a cache on an nvme.

Software I want easy to use so unraid looks like the likely option.

Keen to see if this is good as a first NAS build and any advice be great.

Connecting Unraid to a Shared Synology Drive
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-26-2025, 09:12 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello again Gentleman -

So since I have the Memini up and running now on Unraid I am looking to have Jellyfin from my Unraid connect to one of my Synology nas's for my TV shows only. I was going to load everything on the Mini but the Tv shows folder is too big and just won't cut it.

They're both on the same local network and I just want jellyfin to connect to the Synology shared folder I designate via Unraid and then when I look at my shows have it stream from the Synology NAS. By chance am I A.) Making sense and B.) how do I begin with this?

Thank you as always!

Rob

Advice on the DS1821+ vs the DS1823xs+
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-26-2025, 09:12 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I recently purchased a new Synology DS1821+ for $1,035 and the DS1823xs+ for $1596. So, the difference is about $561. My question is the AMD V1780B that much better than the V1500B? Most of the benchmark tests show that the V1780B is almost twice as fast as the V1500B. What I plan on using the NAS for is mainly File Server and media streaming, maybe a few docker containers. Also, the DS1821+ is discontinued and my other concern is the software support which is about 10 years, so I may only have another 6 years of life for this unit. Should I keep the DS1821+ or the DS1823xs+. Is it worth the extra $561.

What are your thoughts and advice?

Relatively simple NAS mainly for backup of images off multiple phones (multiple users).
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-26-2025, 09:12 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Largely comparing three units. ASUSTOR AS6702T, Synology DS725+, QNAP HS264 (or qu405 if it was worth it, i suspect not). Mainly looking for the most seamless interface for my parents (relatively elderly) using their phones. I can do all the setup. I am based in australia. Don't really want bottom of the barrel. Not looking at any home surveillance. Probably want the ability to expand into more file sharing and multimedia sharing in the future but not going to be going near video editing. Something that replicates the google photos experience as much as possible. Ultimately looking to get rid of cloud storage.
