NAS advice: iCloud alternative with Apple photo format support and similar library management
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-14-2025, 02:52 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi everyone,

I’m seeking advice on choosing a NAS for photo and video management. My goal is to find a platform that natively supports modern Apple formats such as HEIF, Apple ProRAW, and Live Photos, and provides robust library management for both personal and shared collections—with the ability to easily move photos between these libraries—all within a single application. A crucial feature is also the ability to view both libraries simultaneously in one interface and timeline, similar to Apple Photos.

I want to use this NAS as a full replacement for iCloud to store tens of thousands of photos and videos. So far, I have mainly considered NAS systems running Synology DSM, UGREEN UGOS PRO, TerraMaster TOS 6, and MinisCloud OS.

Lastly, I’m curious about how critical having ECC RAM is for ensuring data safety.

If there exists an ecosystem with an app that matches Apple Photos’ functionality please share experiences and recommendations.

Thank you for any insights or suggestions.

Low powered Linux box with 2 drive bays
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-14-2025, 02:52 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi.

Been watching your YouTube for a while now and seen a bunch of reviews, both of hardware and software, and for a casual user, that is great.

I'm running a small Ceph cluster at home and also talk a bit about it on my channel, so I want to have a heterogeneous environment with a lot of different Linux boxes with storage.

Is there a reason why you don't cover installing custom operating systems on NAS boxes? Brand loyalty? Or do you think that your audience is just not interested in you mentioning that, as an example: "This NAS device has this much internal drive space and allows you to replace the operating system."

Just curious. Keep up the great work.

Best regards
Daniel Persson

  DS1821+ Fan Question
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-14-2025, 02:52 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a Synology DS1821+ with 2 WD Red NVMEs and 8 WD red SA500 4TB drives. When copying large (500GB plus data) from one volume to another and SSDs heat up which is expected but I get a Synology message stating system temperature is high and NAS will shutdown. This is because the SSD will go up to 60 degrees Celsius. I know the fans are setup to exhaust air but was wondering if it would be better to switch them to intakes? This way the drives and system overall remain cool?

  NAS Advice
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-14-2025, 02:52 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I'm a tech savvy home user with a long history of IT involvement dating back to the late 90s. In our home (two users), we have a handful of iOS devices and a single Windows-based laptop. I've started looking at NAS options as a way to automatically back-up photos and videos from our iOS devices instead of paying for cloud storage. I need the photos and videos be accessible from outside our home. I have no interest in other activities (e.g., use of PLEX). I need the software piece to be simple and as automatic as possible.

I have been interested in Synology, because they seem to have a simple, user-friendly software environment with good privacy measures, but have some concerns given their recent hardware locking activities. QNAP and UGREEN seem to both fall short in the areas of software and security, although I have had a couple of friends encourage me to use QNAP. Thank you!

24/7 low-power OMV server for Jellyfin, Immich, and AdGuard, etc.
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-14-2025, 02:52 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm building a 24/7 low-power OMV server for Jellyfin, Immich, and AdGuard. Any suggestions?

OS: OpenMediaVault + Docker (using mergerfs/snapraid for a flexible pool)
CPU: Intel Core i5-14500 (for 24/7 low-power Jellyfin Quick Sync)
Case: Fractal Design Node 804 (compact 8-bay mATX cube)
Mobo: ASRock B760M Steel Legend (mATX, for future HBA/PCIe expansion)
RAM: 32GB DDR5 (headroom for OMV + many Docker containers)
PSU: 650W 80+ Gold Modular (for 24/7 efficiency)
OS/App Drive: 2TB NVMe SSD (fast OS/cache, lets HDDs sleep)
Fans: 3x Arctic P12 PWM (replacing stock fans for silence)
Storage: 3x 20TB (1 parity, 2 data. Using a 20TB parity drive for max future expansion)

Is this build overkill?

  Video Editing NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-14-2025, 02:52 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello! I've been watching a ton of your videos in an attempt to wrap my head around building a NAS for video editing. I understand it in a broad sense, but when it comes down to picking parts for my specific use case, there doesnt seem to be a lot of information anywhere. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place, but I was hoping you could help point me in the right direction for mother boards, cases, and CPUs that will help get the job done. Im looking for something we can remotely edit off, and store a significant amount of footage on. I can send more details, but I fear for my character limit. Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon.

  Qnap TS 264 optimal setup
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-14-2025, 02:52 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

After months of watching your advice I just bought a TS 264 for basic home use. I am going to set it up mainly as a VM (linux and mac), cloud storage and small web server, and backup.
Do I need seperate volumes for this?
What configuration to you advice?
I know this is a very elementary question but will greatly appreciate if you can direct me in the right direction to start.
Best wishes.

  32GB RAM for TS453D
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-14-2025, 02:52 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey boss,

Long time reader and watcher... Love your stuff.. Smile

I am in a slight pickle... I really need some help finding old ram for my NAS... DDR4 16GB that will suit my NAS.

I bought some RAM (Crucial) - and it did not work... it did like your first example video where you tried to stick in a 32 GB stick.....
I rolled back and thankfully, the old RAM was fine. I lost 25% restock fee Sad

I think I just need to get a hold of some RAM as you describe in one of your videos..... I think it's down to having sticks of RAM SODIMM 16GB even 3200 where the chips are only on one side..

Anyway... I really want to upgrade.. I hope I can ask you how to buy, if you have some - happy to pay shipping to the colonies...... i currently have the 8GB variety..... with the celeron processor deal... Been running mine for years.. has been great (3 years.. just recently upgraded to what I would consider massive 18TiB drives...) - RAID 5 - so about 50 TB..

Anyway.. please help.. I love your channel..

Hi ,Im looking for a nas ideally qnap or synology with the longest support posible. The dilemma I have is that 2 models im interested in TS-464 has approx 18 months support left and TS-453E about 3 years according to QNAP support.Which is very short for $500 .Id go with synology 25 series but it doesn't support 3rd party discs; I already have wd reds. Should I wait for Qnap new release or there is other options avalible ? please advise
