Regarding Zettlab NAS Review
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-22-2025, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear NAS compare,

After reviewing the Zettlab NAS. A question raised for this one. Regarding the hot-swapping function of this NAS. As currently the device is not support hot-swapping currently in the Kickstarter comments, and it will be researched. Based on the current hardware your received for testing, could you please comments if this device could support hot-swapping in the future, just lack of software capability, or simply, the hardware cannot support hot-swapping?

Thanks,
Drake

Question First home NAS for beginner
Posted by: Maniekk90 - 05-21-2025, 06:50 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey ! I've been reading and watching tons of information about NASes for over a month and still cannot decide. Luckily I got into this wonderful forum and I hope you guys can help me.

I'm a regular home user, have a lot of photos, movies, ISO files etc, completely running out of space on my PC. That's why I decided to get my first 2 bay NAS.
My first choice was Synology DS224+however the more I read the less I know, therefore I will try to summarize my needs
I would like to have a plug & play device (therefore building my own is of the table, I'd rather go for complete devices). My needs are:

 • autosyncing photos & movies from my android smartphones and having an access to them via dedicated android app
 • I have a Samsung TizenOS TV and would like to stream 4K movies from NAS to my TV via internet (I know that I'd have to sideload apps for TizenOS, but as well I have a chromecast 4k as backup).
 • Access to NAS from my phone anywhere I am
 • NAS on HDDs however It would be nice if it had NVME slot as well. I will want to add some RAM as well
 • Running HomeAssistant

Several devices caught me eye:
- Synology DS224+
- Synology DS723+ (however with this one I would have to wait for some discout as it exceeds my budget)
- UGREEN DXP2800 (This one is tempting, especially that has NVME slot and upgradable RAM, however I have no idea about stuff I've mentioned above and security of this one)
- AS3302T v2 DRIVESTOR 2 Pro Gen2 (This one as well was tempting however I read some negative comments about some random issues with connectivity, support and software)
- QNAP TS-264 (can't say much about this one - only heard it's not that beginner user-friendly)
- TERRAMASTER F2-424 (seems pretty decent but don't know much about software and other important stuff).

As said before my first choice was DS224+ but I've been reading more and more negative news such as synology-only HDDs and the stuff they've removed over the years. I know it will impact future DS generations but who knows if suddenly they won't change their mind. That's why I was thinking if my future NAS should have a possibility to install TrueNAS just in case in the future and I know Synology blocked this option.

May I ask for your advice ? AS

 Do I need a NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-21-2025, 04:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi, I am looking for storage options that are both secure and convenient. My current use case is just to clear off space off my phone (Photos and videos) which has only 256GB of storage. I am looking for a long term solution for this use case and want to bring my old photos and videos over (about 1.7 TB). I have looked at the Synology BeeDrive and BeeStation. and both seems to offer only up to 4TB and the Beedrive has no form of password protection.

I am considering a NAS just for the purpose of having at least 8TB of storage, redundancy, security and scalability.
Is it a good idea or should I just stick with external HDDs?

Are Synology hard drive suitable to use as surveillance
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-20-2025, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Planning to upgrades DS916+ and notice with the new Synology only support Synology hard drive. I use the NAS for data and video surveillance.
What type of drive should I purchase if planning to run surveillance which will be compatabile with the new 2025NAS.
Will synology make toshiba S300 video drives compatible with the new 2025 NAS.

 NAS Recommendation
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-20-2025, 04:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi, 1st time NAS buyer with four primary use cases looking for advice.
1. Backup data (documents, files)
2. Backup photos from phones of all family members (Preferably good organization capabilities like FACE AI and Object AI)
3. Plex/ Jellyfin media server for local streaming
4. Docker support for self hosting services.
I prioritize good reliable software and services.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

A modest use case - raid not needed
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-19-2025, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I want to share my FLAC music files with my music streamer via my home network
I do not need RAID
The "originals" of my files are stored on the cloud.
The NAS is just a local storage device.

Candidates that I can see are
Synology Ds-124
QNAP TS-133
Have I missed something?

Do you see any clear benefits for my specific and modest use case ?

Thanks for any advice that you may have.

 Question on DIY NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-19-2025, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello, I've started reading and watching your videos and they are detailed and great, thank you!
I had some questions.
My primary use case is backing up photos and videos from my phone, sharing them with friends and family globally. Also storage of my important documents, files, resumes, taxes, stuff like that.
Also, what I'd like to do is have my brother in another state have a NAS that we can back up to each other for catastrophic loss mitigation.
I do not anticipate streaming content from it, as I dont even quite understand how or why someone would do that. If not using a DVD/Blueray, nor Netflix/streaming platform, where and why would you stream content? Something illegally downloaded? I don't do that.

Looking for advice what sort of hardware you'd recommend focusing on VERY COTS products. Like a used Dell 3050 MT or XPS 8900 or something Dell/HP that can be bought used, cheap.
If i'm not editing and streaming videos, do I NEED SSD for chache?
