Baking up to UNAS-Pro from Synology
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-16-2026, 10:57 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Perhaps you could do a video on backing up from a Synology NAS (or other brand) to a UNAS. UNAS has good options for backing up its data but it has been hard for me to find a way to backup to the UNAS, which is what I purchased it for.
My current method is to map UNAS shares in Synology and then use a rsync script in Synology Task Manager to backup to those mapped folders.
I started with the script:
rsync -av /volume1/SynologyFolder /volume1/backups/UNAS_Mapped_Folder
That worked but was extremely slow. I then found out I could run multiple instances in parralel so I moved to this script, running on the Synology (with a lot more folders not listed here):
rsync -av --exclude='@eaDir*' /volume1/music /volume1/backups/UNAS_Share &
rsync -av --exclude='@eaDir*' /volume1/photo /volume1/backups/UNAS_Share &
wait
Unifi support informs me that installing rsync through SSH on the UNAS would violate support so the indirect folder method seems to be all I can do. An app would be much prefered.

  NAS for Professional Photographer
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-16-2026, 10:57 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi thanks in advance for all the advice and insights.

After years of considering it, the time has finally come for me to invest in a NAS system. Until recently I was fully convinced that my NAS would be a Synology, but with the recent controversy around the brand, I’m now unsure which direction to go.

I’m a professional photographer. My photo archive is currently over 20TB and grows at an average rate of about 3TB per year.

I’m fairly certain I want to invest in a 4- or 5-bay expandable NAS, using 12TB to 16TB drives per bay, most likely in RAID 5. The main goal is to have a centralized photo archive with redundancy, so that a single drive failure doesn’t mean data loss. I would also like to work directly from the NAS, both for storage and editing. My workflow is entirely based on Adobe software (Lightroom and Photoshop for photos) and DaVinci Resolve for video.

  Synology transcoding
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-16-2026, 10:57 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

It sounds like it's just a flip of a switch for Synology to enable or disable hardware transcoding. Why don't you suggest they go to a subscription based model for hardware transcoding?

3rd party RAM memory for NAS DS225+
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-16-2026, 10:57 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I just bought a NAS Synology DS225+ (with 2GB RAM) and I read that you need 6GB RAM to use the face recognition in Synology Photo.
The Synology 4GB RAM is extremely expensive 166,60 €
https://www.synology.com/en-eu/products/store/D4NS01-4G

Therefor I consider buying 4GB 3rd party RAM, but I am not sure which one to buy. I found this one from Amazon, but it is 2400Mhz and I think it must be 2666Mhz. I have no idea how important this is 2400 or 2666Mhz.

If you can advise me which is a good brand or better to buy the very expensive Synology RAM.

Thanks in advance,
Guy

  Non Synology Drives in DX525
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-16-2026, 10:57 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey there!
I'd like to know if non-Synology hard drives work in the Synology DX525. Unfortunately, Synology's website is pretty vague on this topic.

If non-Synology HDDs do not work in the DX525, I will have to look for alternatives to Synology, as the Seagate 26TB Factory Recertified is not recognised in a DX517 on a DS1821+. These HDDs are recognised without any problems in a DX513 connected to a DS916+. This is really poor performance from Synology!

Thank you for your help!

  NAS upgrade consideration
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-16-2026, 10:57 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
I have been using a DS220j for four years for backup, storage and as a media server. With increasing use of DSM—especially Surveillance Station (five cameras)—the system has reached its limits. CPU load is moderate, but RAM usage is constantly above 50%, and since adding a 4K camera, responsiveness (DSM UI) has decreased.
I am considering DS225+, 425+, 725+ or 925+. Two bays are sufficient today, but I want to avoid reaching hardware limits again. I use 8 TB and 12 TB IronWolf drives in SHR; storage is adequate.
Current apps: Synology Drive, Cloud Sync, Media Server, Surveillance Station.
Planned: Docker/Container Manager for network monitoring and home automation, possibly a small web server.
Noise is irrelevant; power consumption matters.
Key considerations:
• 2-bay or 4-bay?
• Celeron or AMD Ryzen (future proof CPU!)?
• RAM?
• HDD compatibility?
• Enough power for Surveillance Station?
Should I buy now or wait for new models?
Thanks and best regards,
Falk

  SSD Cache
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-16-2026, 10:57 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a Synology NAS 920+. I use it to store family videos and photos. Also for Plex Media server, but I also store my Graphic Design files in it. I just bought 2 500 GB SSDs (Samsung SSD 980). I need advice if I should set up as "Read-and-Write" or "Read" only. Thanks.

  replacement NAS choice
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-16-2026, 10:57 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys. I'm forced to upgrade my old NAS - a very old QNAP TS-559 Pro II which I've had so long I can't remember! - definitely more than 15 years, perhaps going on nearly 20.. anyway, due to company policy my corporate Win11 laptop enforces secure SMB which my old NAS can no longer support, with the result that my main "daily driver" computer can no longer connect to it's shares... So, I have to replace it... since I know QNAP well, I'm looking at the TS-433-4G, but I'm also weighing up the Synology DS425+... where I am the QNAP is about £100 cheaper. I know either will be a night & day improvement... My use case is basic filesharing/backup. anyone have any thoughts on whether the extra £100 is worth it?
