  Looking at first NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-27-2025, 10:45 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I am looking at a buget friendly 2 or four bay (unsure how much storage i will need to store about 300 blurays). FOur bay would be nice as i will have the option to expand down the track. But a minimum of 2 is fine. I want a reasonable cpu for streaming 4k blurays but am not sure what fits in my buget.

  Which NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-27-2025, 10:45 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I've now bought 2 NAS, a 918+ expanded to 16Gb and a 425+ with 2Gb onboard.

My Q is which NAS will perform best for thw two scenarios below:

I have 2 use cases -
family photos, replacing Google and Apple and doing all the fancy facial recognition, location, places tagging and all the fancy stuff Synology photos gets you (the main reason I have upgraded fro mm 412+)

Plex, watching 4K movies on my 65" OLED LG TV (unsure what transcoding setting to use here also)

Thank you!

  Advise for first NAS purchase
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-27-2025, 10:45 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Thank you for your videos and I am enjoying the content however still confused. Since Black friday is there and I want to buy my first NAS so need your advise. I just want to use NAS for two purposes to run my movies on the Sony TV with android and backup my files. I am wondering which NAS to buy. After watching the videos I can think of few Ugreen, QNAP or Terramaster. I am also stretched to think buy a 2 bay NAS with SSD to avoid Noise as it will be sitting in my living room or 4 bay NAS with 5400 rpm HDD as they will be making noise. Please advise models as what I have in mind is Ugreen 4300 or DMX 4800 which I think is too much. Terramaster F4 - 424 PRo or Qnap TS-464-8G-US. Thank you for your time

Synology DS220j to Eugreen NASync DXP4800 plus
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-27-2025, 10:45 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I currently have a Synology DS220j with two 4T Drives. I was considering a DS425+ but their plus series require Synology’s branded drives which become expensive and limited. I am considering your NASync DXP4800 Plus with four 12T drives. I am contemplating whether I will keep the Synology NAS. Will there be an issue if I have both NAS units on my network? How easy is it to transfer the Synology 4T drive contents to the UGreen DXP480 Plus unit.

Can the UGreen NAS files and folder be seen in MS Explorer / File Manager? File manager sometimes has issues finding the Synology folders/files

  Nas Advice
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-27-2025, 10:45 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am looking for a NAS for personal backup but want to have the option to use it for more demanding tasks in the future. That’s why I found the High performance hardware for the price from Ugreen quite appealing. Are there other options and are there drawbacks of Ugreen not being around for long?

  Black Friday UPS deals
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-24-2025, 04:53 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi. I've had a DS218 for a few years, mainly for multimedia and file storage. Home electricity seems generally good, but there's been one or two power cuts for just a second or two. It never occurs to me the NAS needs restarted until I'm away from home and realise it's down. I've been meaning to get a UPS for a while but never got around to it. Are there any good Black Friday deals just now for what I need? Thanks

The two M.2 cache slots on the TerraMaster F2-424 make a huge difference in random read/write performance — it’s noticeably faster than my old four-bay NAS.

  DS220+ NAS Memory Upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-24-2025, 04:53 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

DSM v7.2.2-72806 Update 5 or up

I currently have 6144 MB of total physical memory (2 + 4 GB according to Synology). With about three containers (GitLab, Code Server, PostgreSQL) I can already max it out, which makes the system literally unusable.

With the DSM version mentioned above, does this “unofficial memory upgrade” actually work? I don’t want to risk damaging my NAS for nothing.

Confirmation by Synology - DS1825+ HDD compatibility will not be rolled back anymore
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-24-2025, 04:53 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Rob & Team,

I asked Synology for a DS1825+ lifetime guarentee the HDD compatibility will not be rolled back anymore after opening it with DSM7.3.
I got an official confirmation by German Synology Support: HDD compatibility will not be rolled back anymore. Only devices on the "incombatibiliy list" (maybe there is a catch or do you know of any rules preventing them from simply adding arbitrary drives there?)

Just thought you might be interested in this.
Kind Regards
Ben
