Processor Speed for PLEX - DS1522+ vs DS1621+
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-16-2022, 06:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I am running a home-based Plex server and would like the ability to efficiently transcode in 4k. I have been comparing the Synology DS1522+ and the DS1621+. If nothing else, I prefer the design of the 1621+ and also the extra drive bay would be nice, but not necessary. I also like the ability to upgrade the network port to 10GbE. Processor speed however is where I need advice.

I noticed that the 1621+ may have a less powerful CPU than the 1522+ and I'm wondering if this is true. The 1621+ has a quad-core 2.2Ghz, but the 1522+ has a dual core 2.6 (3.1 turbo) Ghz... I'm not quite technical enough to know which would be faster of the two? Ultimately, I am going to be purchasing the model that has the faster processor and that can transcode 4k Plex most efficiently.

Any advice would be appreciated.

  DS920+

We currently have a RS3617xs but we are running into issues with 4k transcoding. On paper, with my limited understanding, it looks like it should outperform and do a better job than the oft-recommended DS920+ but maybe I'm missing something?

  NAS selection
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-15-2022, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Thoroughly enjoy your videos - thanks for them,. I will be purchasing a Synology NAS to use as a home video server, data storage of documents and photos and as a personal cloud to share drone videos from my DJI Mini 3 Pro in 4K with family and friends. I am considering the DS1520+ or DS1522+. The primary difference I see for my usage is the 20+ uses Intel with imbedded graphics and the 22+ uses AMD without embedded graphics. At this time, I can purchase either the 20+ or 22+ for the same amount. I would appreciate any opinion you can give regarding a best fit for my purposes. Thank you very much……..Keith

How to safely turn off Synology - SSD cache will cause volume crash warning
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-15-2022, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a Synology DS1621xs with extra RAM and 2 SSDs for cache.. I want to turn the server off to add an UPS for safety because of a lot of lightning in my area in fall. The server says I can loose data if I do not do something to (remove?) the SSDs. I do not understand:
I try to shut off via the web page when the notice is coming, so I do not dare to continue. The server restarts when up-dating, so what is the problem with shutting down?
Some advice is very much appreciated!

  New NAS Recomendation
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-15-2022, 02:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I am looking for a NAS server for my home. The usage would be to offload photos and videos on Google Photos to a local server. Additionally, I would like to potentially add movies to this device and possibly store PC games that could be played over the network on this device.

  Factory reset (no drives)
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-15-2022, 06:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I can't find any definitive answers on this, but if a NAS like a ds218+ with no drives are sold do they keep any information on previous configurations, and is it safe to sell without drives? Do I need to do anything for protection?

  NAS advice
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-14-2022, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

We conversed last year but I'm now ready to take the leap and buy a new NAS. I have seen a synology 5 Bay enclosure second hand for £300 and watch your video on the new Seagate 18TB drives. Would these work on a older Synology DiskStation DS1515+ NAS (2GB Ram) 5 Bay Diskless. Or can you recommend a second hand site to trawl. Or should I just go with a new enclosure unit.

  Photography Nas Options
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-14-2022, 01:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello. I’m a photographer that does a lot of mixed shooting. Video sometimes hoping to do more. I photograph mostly real estate but I photograph anything and everything. I shoot 5 days a week and every shoot is 20-60 gb. I have 8tb internally on my MacBook Pro. Which has been fine for a few months but I’m getting near the end already. I shoot on a Sony a7Riv which is 61megapixels and about 140mb per photo and I shoot 5 shot brackets for one grouping. Anyway, I’d like to keep everything and possibly edit off the drive/nas if need be. I’ve looked at Synology and QNAP. I’ve looked at building my own. I’m intrigued by QNAP because of the photography software and caching on different tiers. I’ve never done NAS before but I’m trying to learn and there’s just so many options. I’d really appreciate your help. Thanks.

Posted by: Enquiries - 08-13-2022, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Bought ds920+ in offer . Now what's the recommendation to buy hdd. Go for 5400 4tbs or 7200 4tbs. And why choose faster over slower. Later I can small ssd to boost performance.

A NAS for Jellyfin, backup, Pi-Hole and surveillance?
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-13-2022, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey, a friend of mine got me their old Core 2 Quad (4c/4t from '08) tower and I'm gonna try making a NAS out of it, what surveillance brand would you recommend me getting for an open-source enthusiast? And should I spend another hundred bucks on a surveillance-specific drive if I only want the cameras to record whenever there is a movement?

If you know some open-source utilities that can manage surveillance cameras and offer a web-ui and let you have a mobile application you can connect to your server, that'd be wonderful, thanks!
