Hi,
Our church is wanting to put up some cameras just to capture the entrances and see who's coming and going. We will most likely go with 4 cameras and our facility covers quite a bit of square footage between 2 buildings, so running home runs to an NVR is just straight out of the question. Which leads me to NAS. I am a complete novice to anything NAS related. I don't know what makes a NAS good, what makes it bad, or how to set one up (although I'm sure it's easier that I have it built up to be in my head).
This NAS will live at our network head-end location, so right next to our router and our best switch. We don't currently have a high network demand for other traffic, so 4 cameras won't cause any noticeable congestion. My primary inquiry is this: We'd like to record based on motion detection and having a NAS that can do that is very important. How do I shop for a NAS that has this feature? What should I be looking for in the spec sheets? Is there a NAS out there that can setup boundaries for the motion detection area similar to what a Ring or Nest cam can do? And what cameras should I pair with this NAS? How much storage should I get if we want to keep footage for 30 days @ 10fps, 1920x1080?
Target budget would be close to 1500 USD.
Thanks so much for your time and assistance!

Hi there - first please let me express my utmost gratitude to you for all the wonderful content you’ve shared on your site and on YouTube. It has been very helpful in me making the decision to purchase and implement a NAS/DAS system.
I am aiming to utilize our new TVS-672XT connected to a PC via its Thunderbolt Titan Ridge card as well as a Mac Studio via Thunderbolt, mainly for setting up a shared PostgreSQL database for DaVinci Resolve, but additionally as shared storage system, and I was really hoping you could shed some guidance as I feel a bit overwhelmed in the set up process.
The drive specs are the following: (6) 4TB WD Red SA500 SSDs and (2)TB Samsung 970Pro fir the M.2 cache.
I was wondering if I should set up everything in one thick storage pool or possibly two, where one is just a static volume for active media and the other is for longer term storage with allocation for snapshots? Is there any drawback to having two? Is there a golden rule to how much space to allocate for snapshots should you opt to do that?
I am a bit worries about all the ransomware attacks going on as of late so have opted to keep the NAS offline and just have it connected to both machines via Thunderbolt - is that overkill? Are there steps I could take to allow it to be accessible via the qnap cloud and not risk getting hacked? I do have a VPN service, is there a way to integrate that into the connection some how? I saw sownthig about static IPs but networking general goes a bit over my head and I haven’t quite figued that out yet. Is that still necessary of connecting via Thunderbolt?
Sorry if these questions are very dense, I just wanted to gauge an expert’s opinion prior to finishing my setup if possible. Thank you in advance for your time and I hope I provided enough insight to be helpful. If not, please do let me know and I can try and explain further.
Hope you are well and to hear from you soon.
All the best,
Josh

unable to open Asustor control centre on Mac |

My Asustor Nas is working making Time Machine backups hourly/daily etc without any problem.
I attempted to use AiFoto3 on my iphone to connect with the nas for uploading photos, unfortunately things have wrong and now I cannot get Control centre to open up to enable me to use ADM.
I got a message that ip addresses were having a problem but having gone into my virginmedia hub 3 router I was given addresses for; iMac 192.168.0.10/24, Orbi11 wifi; 192.168.0.12/24 and the Asustor AS3304T; 192.168.0.31/24. which is the ip address shown on the control centre download screen which I cannot open.
Can you tell me what to do about this please. Do I have to disconnect the Nas completely and start again or what other course of action should I follow.

NAS for Geospatial projects with large file reads |

Hi
I am researching on behalf of my girlfriend who recently started running a business (1yr in). She is a geologist working in the mining industry.
She uses QGIS (one software example) and has *lots* of *large* datasets (up to 7GB) that are loaded into each workspace - these are often shape files (vector) or raster, and the size is usually because they cover a huge area (e.g. Queensland, Northern Territory, New South Wales, all states in Australia).
My experience with QGIS is limited to creating topo maps for hiking. I use a ReadyNAD314 as a file server (for my business) and can confirm it's bloody slow to load the data on screen.
I lent her my 6 year old Dell XPS15 med-spec and she has been using that for the last year. The 1TB disk is full and she is offloading a lot of data onto Dropbox. I could install a larger disk but I think this is a bandaid approach for an old laptor.
Her main client uses Dropbox as a file server (dumb IMO) and that dataset is growing rapidly - this currently sits on her C drive, and it appears to be cumbersome to selectively sync these to such a small hard disk (I suggested her client needs to set up a VPN but that's another topic.)
It seems that it is common even in the biggest corporations that geologists often save their projects locally to avoid the network bottlenecks. Also a project can contain hundreds of dynamically linked shapefiles and I understand that it's a pain in the butt to relink them.
Geologists will spend a approx week per month out in the field (remote australia with no, or crap internet), and they need to take the working project files with them.
My thinking is that options are:
1) New High Spec Laptop+ NAS (Nas holding the bulk of the project data, and manually copy any large files to the laptop as needed to avoid bottleneck) Will need to come up with a system for when transferring projects fully to the laptop when working remote. Dropbox can run on the NAS.
2) Laptop with huge hard disk - basically run as is. This would be the most convenient, but IMO it's risky with no raid and all eggs in one basket and I'm not sure if it's possible to get min 10TB in a laptop. I understand why this would be her preference. Whist in the office backups can run to the NAS.
3) Desktop with lots of disk capacity, lesser spec laptop and cumbersome workflow to transfer files. NAS for backups. Would work well for when in the office, but need a way to transfer to the Laptop
I saw your review and am pretty sold on the QNap TS464-4G.
I guess I'm wondering if you've had any experience with this kind of thing? The data management?
Thanks
Dave

Plex NAS |

I apologize if this is a duplicate. I tried to send from my phone a few days ago and the progress icon never stopped spinning, so I don't know if it went through.
First, some background. I currently have a Drobo 5N that has been giving me good service for many years, but is now getting to the point where I’m maxing out on available space; every month or so I’m getting status warnings until I delete or move data. The unit has 16TB installed (4x3TB, 1x4TB WD Reds) with about 12TB available after single disk redundancy. The current firmware only allows for 16TB, and although I understand that I can increase that to 64TB with different firmware, it can’t be done without removing and reloading all the data. Since this would involve getting something to off-load all the data to, then upgrading to new HDDs anyway, I started looking for a new solution and came across your YouTube videos. They're great by the way.
I’m a home user, and right now the main use for the Drobo is for media storage. I use the Plex Media Server on my PC as I found the app on the Drobo never worked well for me; or at least I never spent enough time trying to get it to work better. With a new NAS I will want something that will handle Plex directly, and I will also start doing a local backup of my PC as well; currently my PC is backed up off-site using Backblaze. I should also look at backing up my wife’s iMac beyond the external drive that holds her Time Machine files. Oh, and there are also a couple decades of photos that we should get around to organizing.
Anyway, from watching your videos I am looking at the following setup, and I would like your opinion as to suitability for my use scenario. (Much of it is available on sale in my area (Canada) this month)
NAS - DS1520+ (with stock 4GB memory) $929 CDN
DRIVES - 3 x IronWolf 12TB (ST12000VNA008) - $295 CDN ($885 CDN) (This would increase my available storage to 2.5x the amount of data that I will initially load. I could increase this to 4 drives from the start if there would be any benefit, or just have the extra bays in reserve.)
CACHE - No NVMe cache as it doesn’t seem to be beneficial for my main goal of a Plex server. However, I can get Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB M.2 NVMe (MZ-V7S1TOB/AM) PCIe 3 x 4 for $140 CDN if I’m wrong.
RAID/FILE SYSTEM - I will use SHR with single disk redundancy, and BTRFS. Over the years I twice had to replace a failed drive in the Drobo and the hot swappable feature made it so simple that I want to stay with something that can offer that feature, as well as handling potentially mismatched drives, and SHR seems to provide that if I've understood your videos correctly.
I still have what are probably the usual questions about should I get something with more bays, or slots for upgrades, but I don't really see that as being an immediate concern as I don't have anything else that's above 1GBe.
That’s it. Your thoughts?
Regards,

8-Bay NAS |

I am considering which 8-bay NAS solution I should go for for my Plex Server. I'm only really considering QNAP for its superior hardware. I have dismissed the 'TS 872XT' due to the reports of QA issues with the motherboard. This has me now looking at the 'TS-873A' and adding a 'MSI GTX 1650 4G'. However, I'm not sure if this CPU is too weak given my use case, and that I should instead and get the 'TVS-h1288X' and add the 'GTX 1050 Ti 4G'. Given the price difference of £1,500, I would like to know if its necessary to get the 'TVS-h1288X' for its stronger CPU please.
My typical use case all occurring simultaneously:
- 2 4K direct play/streams , each 30Mb/s
- 8 transcodes from 4K 30Mb/s to 720p 4Mb/s

Followed you off and on for several years. Thanks for the reviews. I've had great success working with non-profits here in Nome, Alaska using Drobo 5N2. But sadly, as you know, they are filing for bankruptcy. So, I'm looking at Synology and just now familiar with their OS. How does it compare to Drobo for ease of use and FTP setup. Seems pretty easy. I love their offsite backup feature on partners Synology NAS.
Would you recommend the Synology NAS DiskStation DS1520+ or would you recommend a newer model? As stated above, I have 5 new Iron Wolf 4TB drives ready to go in. I'm not needing a ton of room at this point but would be pulling hundreds of MB daily for programming by an FTP retrieval software on our local internal network.
Thanks for you help.
