Using hard drives of varying storage capacity
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-07-2022, 04:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys!

I hope all is well with you all! Thank you for your excellent videos and all the great information you all provide!

I had a question about using hard drives with different capacities. I currently have a DS920+, in which I have three 6TB Seagate drives using SHR which I know would allow me to use different sized hard drives. I was thinking about putting a 14TB hard drive into the one empty bay I currently have. My question is...would having such an "asymetric" set up, with three 6TB drives and one 14TB drive be ok? Would there be performance trade offs? Would I be able to get full use of the 14 terabytes in the new drive?

Thank you very much in advance for your time and advice! It's much appreciated!

Regards!

  QNAP TVS-h474 vs TS-464
Posted by: KoiPondJD - 11-07-2022, 12:06 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello.  I'm in the market to replace a 10-year old Synology DS412+.  In all honesty, it's met my needs for many years until media formats have exploded and client transcoding is hit or miss.  I'm also adding 4-6 cameras which I've never had prior.  I'm believe the TS-464 will meet my needs with some added upgrades.  The TVS-h474 is notable but will it meet or exceed the performance of the TS-464.  What could one expect of the TVS-h474 PLEX performance?  I intend to have it for a good 7-10 years if possible.  If the answer is "NO", what about TVS-h674-i3-16G.  It's 3x the amount of the TS-464 but if it would future proof me for 10 years it's an option.   PS - I was a hold-out for the DS-923+ but disappointed in the CPU without the on-board GPU.  Thank you.   jd

  Where to get QNAP TS-464T4?
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-06-2022, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Where can I buy QNAP TS-464T4? You mention it in this article that is now 10 months old (as of 11/6/22):
https://nascompares.com/news/ts-464t4-first-thunderbolt-4-nas/

I'm unable to find it anywhere. Are there similar Synology products that allow for direct connection to a mac for better performance as if the NAS was locally connected. I also have a Synology DS918+ and Synology DS214Play but I don't think these allow any direct connection to a mac.

  Replacement of DS411Slim
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-06-2022, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Currently have a nice and compact hassle-free DS411Slim running.
But since it's getting a bit older and nothing lasts forever I'm already planning replacement before it's inevitable.

After waiting for the DS923+ specs I'm still not sure if that would fit me. I think the 920+ is still a good option for me. Especially when the prices might be dropping by the end of 2022.

I have a 1Gbps home network (no upgrades planned yet) and we use the NAS primarily for serving files. We used to watch movies via DLNA/ Media Server but nowadays it's more Netflix and Disney+.

I'm a software developer myself and I like to play around with all the options DSM and the apps given me but all I really use it for is just storing vids and pics from holidays and some documents and music. The reason I'm looking for a 4-bay model is because I 'd like to start with a 2 disk SHR setup and then later be able to extend with 1 or 2 disks if we need more storage capacity.

My current DS411Slim holds 4 disks of 1TB each
1x Samsung HM100UI (there used to be 2 of them at the start but one died and since then I'm hooked on WD red)
3x WD10JFCX-68N6GN0

So effictively I have around 2,7 TB available whereas I'm just using 1,7. So storage demand is actually quite small (at the moment).

What would you recommend in my case?

Regards,
Niels

Upgrading from DS220J - technical question and suggestions?
Posted by: willt - 11-06-2022, 05:35 PM - Forum: NAS upgrades - Replies (1)

Hello,

I am planning to move up from my DS220J - slow processor and low RAM - and am considering a DS220+ (budget is less than $500).
Current DS220J has 2 IronWolf 4Tb, plus an external 8Tb Seagate drive (USB), and I use it most to store files and videos, and 2 surveillance cameras are installed (would love more, but the license cost from Synalogy is expensive). No Plex being used.

Technical question: If a reasonable priced 4-bay comes my way, should I just add 2 new IronWolf disks (same capacity)? What if the new NAS is not Synology, should I export my data to my external drive and wipe the old NAS disks before adding them to the new NAS?

I am considering the DS220+, any other suggestions? It seems that Terramaster and QNAP are options, but the few reviews I have read are not encouraging (lot of work to set them up, heating issues, etc).

Thanks!

  First NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-06-2022, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello Guys,

I found your Youtube Channel and your recommendation for the NAS Advice which I would like to use. We have two chields and therefore many pictures and videos (approx. 300GB till now) . I only make a backup on an external USB drive and it feels like acting in 2000. I think that a NAS could be the right solution for me at the moment?
A am not a computer noob and I guess some basic talent for configuration is available for such a system.
But my time is very limited (thanks familiy Sad ) for a perfekt research in an appropriate system. Maybe u could give me an advice.

Many thanks!!
Viktor

Best RS Unit for Music Storage (Midi / Audio)
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-06-2022, 04:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Greetings Robbie,

Thank you so much for all of your knowledge and advice when it comes to NAS Compares. I really have learned a lot from listening to you and I really enjoy your channel! Smile

I am a pianist and composer here in Nashville, TN, and I am currently running a PC, Windows 10, 64 GB RAM. I am wanting to find a way Robbie of backing up my Midi and Audio Files (Cubase 11) and for my sheet music Dorico 3.5. I currently have a Glyph Drive that is in my rack, which is right below my Steinberg MR816X Audio interface. However, I can't find any manufactures that can mount the new Glyph Drives in my rack.

I could maybe use 1TB on each of the 4 Drives. So, right now, I don't need a lot of space, but as I begin making audio files for Music Libraries for tv and film and to continue with my own solo piano compositions, I want to make sure I have a secure system in place. Not only for backup, but also for networking if need be when working with other composers.

I am new to the world of NAS, but I have seen a couple of musicians on YouTube, and I think they both were using the DS920+ from Synology. I was looking at the RS822+ which is the 4 bay. I like the price, but was not sure if this would work for what I am needing it to do? I believe you mentioned in the RS822+ video that it wouldn't be the best for multimedia? And that it only goes to 2GB Memory?

There is also the RS1221+ which can expand the memory a little more. I wasn't sure if this would be a better option or not? Might be over kill with the 8 bays. But, was trying to find a way to not only back up my midi, sheet music, and audio files, but also my system drive on my PC? I have watched a video on YouTube about swapping out the fans on this unit to make it quieter, but then the temperature getting a little warmer on these? Plus that might work against me when it comes to my warranty?

One other thing Robbie, if I went with the RS 1221+ or the RS822+ I wouldn't be able to use the rack rails. My audio interface and my TASCAM CD-RW900 MKII just screw in on my audio workstation. There is just 4 bolts holding each of those units in place. Are the clamps, or the brackets that screw into the Synology rack units plastic or are they metal? If plastic, would the plastic brackets support the unit? I wouldn't need the handles like on the RS822+ and wasn't sure if those are just extra or if there would be another option of holding the unit in place.

Granted, I know I could use a desktop system, but do like the idea that I could get a rackmount unit. Just wasn't sure though what my best course of action would be for what I am needing it for.

Thank you so much!Smile
Cory

Synology/QNAP NAS or Old Computer with TrueNAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-06-2022, 01:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello NAS experts,

I am looking for a NAS solution forthe following requirements. Have been actively following your video comparisons on youtube and also reading articles, getting accustomed to NAS solutions such as UnRaid, TrueNAS etc. I am contemplating whether to use my existing hardware that is no longer being used for its intended purpose.

Requirements:

1. PLEX Server for Media Hosting 4K HDR and TrueHD atmos content 30TB plus collection. Possibly, transcoding support. Number of streams 1 to 3 (Max. 4) at any given time.
2. Self Hosted Photo Management Solution - Looking to move away from Google Photos and iCloud
3. Self Hosted Backup solution that can be accessed remotely for files similar to Dropbox
4. I will be installing atleast 8 Surveillance cameras across my newly built home so potentially storing and accessing footage on demand

Existing Hardware:

Intel i9900k with Corsair H150i Pro
64GB DDR4 RAM 3600MHz
Asus Maximus XI Hero Wifi Mobo
18TB WD DataCenter Drive + 4 TB WD Red NAS Drive + 4 TB WD Red NAS Drive + 4 TB WD Red Pro
Samsung 500 GB NVMe SSD 880 Pros x 2
No GPU but can buy one if this hardware can be reused for a Custom NAS

I also have an Intel 10th Gen. NUC with 64GB DDR4 RAM, Crucial 500GB NVMe SSD with a Thunderbolt 4 port.

I am happy to buy a NAS where I could use some of these components especially the RAM and Drives. I was looking at QNAP TVS 874 but it had almost the samw processsor as mine 12th gen i5 vs 9th gen i9. Also, TVS-h1288X-W1250-16G vs Synology Ds3622xs+ for future proofing if I were to go with a proprietary NAS.

Looking forward to your suggestions.

Thank you.
