Looking for NAS for video editing
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-14-2022, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, thanks for the help.
We currently have a Synology DS918+ with 16 TB which we use with 5 Macs hooked up via a 1GB ethernet network. The speeds are just not cutting it for us, especially now that some of our newer machines have 10gb ethernet built in so we would like to switch over to a 10gb network.
Would really appreciate advice on which direction to go with a new NAS as well as use of SSDs. We use Final Cut Pro as well as Adobe Premiere and After Effects and the speeds are around 100Mb read and write, which we would like to significantly improve (Considering our new Mac studios can run at around X50 of that on their internal ssd)

Thanks so much for the help!

  QNAP TS464 Space Issue
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-14-2022, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I would be grateful if you could help me, I am new to NAS's and have what is likely to be a very straight forward issue. My QNAP TS464 is warning me that Storage Pool 1 has reached its threshold, which I think is 13TB. There is barely any data on the drives (2 x 14TB and 2 x 1TB NVME, RAID 1) so not sure what its referring to. Think its a simple configuration issue but Im not too techie and cant see how to resolve. Also top light on NAS has red solid light light. Hope you can help, and much appreciated.

BIOS access to install TrueNAS an the NVME

I am running 3 Synology NAS and bought this one as it was recommended by a friend. I am trying to access the BIOS to install TrueNAS on a NVME. I have searched for information and watched several videos to no avail.

Advice on buying a 4-bay NAS for Plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-13-2022, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello!
First of all, I want to thank you for your great videos on the subject, it helps me a lot and confirms me in my choice to self-host my Plex on a NAS.

I am currently renting a dedicated server in a datacenter, but it is no longer possible because of the capacity limits and the monthly cost is too high.

So I (finally!) decided to choose a NAS that will broadcast my multimedia content to me and my family.

I just bought 4 HDD of 4Tb in order to have 12Tb in RAID 5 (or SHR if you tell me it's better) and I'm very interested in the Synology 920+.

However, I would like to know if this NAS can serve me several years without being outdated in two years (because it is still from 2020). I guess it might still be suitable, but when I see models like the Qnap TS-464-4G coming out, I wonder (although I much prefer the Synology interface, which I already used in business).

I would like to move towards a NAS capable of broadcasting 2 or 3 simultaneous video streams, knowing that it is rare when more than 2 or 3 members of my family watch a movie at the same time. But it can happen and I don't want to exclude any possibility.

I thank you very much for your work and the ease with which you share your knowledge with us!

Best regards from France!

Max.

  NAS or SAN advice
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-13-2022, 09:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,
I own a start-up company that is active in the game testing industry and we want to buy a NAS or a SAN, but can't decide which one.
We need the NAS for data storage mostly and backup since we want to keep our game builds on it so that all of us can access them. We also want to keep pictures and documents there.
I would also want to keep my website on it, since I want all the things to be in one place, instead of having a server hosting it for only 400mbs storage.
Thank you.

  Questions about the DS1522+
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-13-2022, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello!

I had a few questions and was hoping to chat with someone about a few things. I was looking at getting the DS1522+ Synology NAS. BH has a deal for $1650 with 60TB Seagate Ironwolf drives.

With the 923+ 4 bay coming out, should I get that or is the DS1522+ still good? I didn't see much difference.

I am a wedding photographer and with this deal on that NAS, it seems like the 5 Bay is what I should get.

Questions:
- Is there any benefit of the 923+ over the 1522+? They seem almost the same except the 1522+ has an additional bay, comes with 8GB ram.
-If I have that NAS, would I want to get 3rd party RAM and m.2 drive?
-I was looking at Samsung Pro m.2.
- with the m.2, should I get the one with the heatsink? Will it fit and is that OK?
- For the RAM, what would you recommend and does the RAM benefit with the a heatsink too?
- If I use two m.2 drives in the NAS, can I use one for NAS cache and another for storage pool?
THANK YOU!!!

Solution for multi editing by 3-4 mac Studio edit stations in small production company
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-13-2022, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good day! I need an expert opinion! We have a small film production. We have an office and 4 Mac Studio in it. We want to install a NAS in the studio so that we can edit from it IN PARALLEL on all 4 computers, accessing the same volumes/files from several editing stations at the same time. We plan to make a local 10G network. I want to buy QNAP TVS-h1688X-W1250-32G for this purpose. But some sellers in stores assure me that this is an amateur level device and it will not allow mounting simultaneously from several mounting stations, and advise me to buy QSAN XCubeNAS XN8012R which in my opinion will not justify its money because it has weaker characteristics (we also do not have a server rack now). What do you advise in this case? I want to find the best solution for my money and not let my fellow editors down so that they don't suffer from bugs later.

  Home NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-13-2022, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Would prefer rack mount. Wanted for time machine backup, backing up linux, windows and mac machines. Maybe running jellyfin or plex within the house. Hosting version control server (probably subversion and git). Would like to be able to seamlessly backup photos from android and iOS devices. Network is all gigabit. Expecting to pay someone like backblaze for offsite backups - don't really mind who, just not wanting to pay a great deal.
Happy to wait for the right second hand thing, and happy to be a bit flexible with timing and budget (e.g. waiting to see if there is an RS1223+) too.
Not really excited about maintaining, want to mostly just set and forget.

  Network switch
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-13-2022, 06:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I recently purchased a Synology DS920+ NAS and am trying to figure a network switch that will work for me. I live in an apartment and the whole network is wireless, even my desktop PC (Dell XPS8700). The router is supplied by the internet provider. It is a Zyxel EMG3415-B10A, Duel-Band Wireless AC/N Gigabit Ethernet Gateway. The modem is a Nokia unit called a "Data Jack" plugged into the router's WAN port. There are 4 Ethernet ports, but it is inconveniently located in a utility room. I was wondering if the Netgear 5-port GS305 or GS305E would work in a wireless connection to the router from my PC or do you have a better solution? Thanks for your help, Stan Lincoln

  ContainerStation and Adguard
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-13-2022, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Please consider doing a video explaining the advantages of using Adguard as well as how to install it on a Qnap Nas along with what is how to use the ContainerStation that you'll need prior to Adguard! Thanks.
